Was browsing the Classic ATRL threads and I can't believe this thread went on for 13 years straight from 2010 :deadbanana4: And that user Rominho still being active and listening to kpop? :rip:

To the girls who don’t understand how marketing and album sales work, the reason SM keeps creating super groups is because they’re pairing up their most popular Chinese idols with their established Korean idols to try and give both sides exposure to grow their groups and it works.

Look at the growth of Wendy’s bars in 2022 after “Step Back.” Her group went from selling 350k at their peak (Queendom) to having their second most popular member record over 165k sales just from six Chinese fansites. This level of growth has never happened before for a girl group that is 8 years in to their career.

Red Velvet faced exponential growth in China after members of the group collaborated with members of Aespa, who has some of the largest bars ever for female idols with Karina, Winter and Ningning. Why do you think they made Aespa and Red Velvet do a surprise Christmas title track together?

One of these days you girls will learn that everything SM does is because they are money-hungry, not because they want to put out collaborations for the sake of the fans :skull:

None of them will leave :rip: maybe Slutcas and TalentTalent but that's it.

Lucas can't leave this year, because he only debuted in 2018. The only way he will is if SM pulls a Jessica and releases him from the contract early, but that is extremely rare and I believe she's the only one they've done that for in recent memory. Usually SM is suing idols to KEEP them in the contracts (like Kris, Tao, Luhan etc.)

I believe NCT members have a 7 year contract and an already signed 3 years extension (=10 years), because Ten let slip in 2021 that he still has "5 years left" on his contract, so it must be the same for all the others who debuted in 2016.

I mean this is true to an extent, but what you're saying doesn't add up.

If SM was that "money-hungry", why did they fail to produce 2 out of 4 versions of Birthday until a week after its release. The stock issues were so bad for Birthday that group orders were literally being refunded. :deadbanana4:

SM loves to show itself as a "culture innovator" so I do think they are doing some of these things for innovation/fanservice rather than pure profit. Just look at SMCU Palace. If that was a YG online concert it would have cost $250 for an access ticket. Not streamed for free.

Getting some quick bucks off an access ticket is not more valuable than selling an SM Town album and promoting certain artists together to try to give them mutually beneficial pushes. It may seem like they ate the cost upfront, but I don’t think selling $250 tickets to 10,000 people would be as beneficial as free uploads to YouTube and higher fan engagement.

And I didn’t say that SM aren’t idiots. But they constantly will underproduce albums because they don’t want to ever have an “overshipped” moment. It’s been one of their worst decisions, imo, and has had the most negative effects on Red Velvet.

these sales increases are extremely sus :deadbanana2:

The whole purpose of the Korean entertainment industry was to sell to foreign countries in order to increase Korea’s GDP and global recognition. It’s why the government invested so hard in Hallyu.

What we’re seeing now is the pay-off after 30 years of work. China has 1.4B people and is becoming more engaged than ever and most major companies have Western distribution, making it easier and more affordable for global fans to participate in the market.

Gaon counts shipments. So all albums (even albums made to be distributed in the West) are counted on Gaon.

The other day I went to Target and majority of their album section was Kpop :deadbanana2:

I don’t know how it is with different groups but when I checked Born Pink digipacks in my store they were manufactured in Germany so I guess those ones wouldn’t count on Gaon?

If you leave in the US, it doesn’t count for bb I guess but some stores are Hanteo/gaon certified so they do count

It depends on whom the distributor is, I believe. It has absolutely nothing to do with where the records are manufactured. As long as a Korean company is at least listed as part of the distributor, then it counts for Gaon. All physical Born Pink copies count because YG is a distributor.

Not totally true. Hoot by Girls’ Generation is the most famous example. SM gave Nayutawave the exclusive Japanese distribution rights and so the Gaon sales ended up just being 199,606 despite Japanese sales alone being 148,761. Japanese sales weren’t eligible for Gaon because a Korean company didn’t help with the distribution.

But yeah, I haven’t seen many Western CDs in my city in years. Target is all K-pop albums.

Out of all of this things some kpop fans often do, which ones you fall víctim of:

1- I like (any) artist from (any) company so I tend to like/stan all of the artists from the same company.

2- I like this idol/group so I have to dislike/drag all the other that may pose as a threat to my favorites

3- i'm a solo stan and I dislike and drag the other members talents/skills/solo work

4- On comeback day/week I stream a lot of the song and video on Spotify/Youtube or more

5- I buy at least one version of the album to support my faves

6- I drag to filth the company my faves work for, for some choices I don't agree with even if I know it wouldnt make a difference

7- I stand by my faves until the minute they flop

8- I stan an idol/group the minute they start to smash

None thank god. But i would do 5 if the physicals albums were accessible in where I live.
