It was decided based on feedback from the spring 2023 town hall to transition this thread back to being election specific. With the Civics section being able to house specific threads on many issues, we think having a generalized politics thread is not completely necessarily anymore.Β
Β

With that said, please continue to be respectful and remember that you do not always need to respond to everyone.Β

His spokesman insisted he was referring to common-law distinction with the Anglo-American line but I doubt it.

Curious if Biden gets blame for bad state laws Β does he also get credit for good ones? Or do we then get essays about how "actually that's in spite of him!!!” :matty:

I mean.. genuinely, who said otherwise? It also has nothing to do with "credit". It reads like you genuinely have no grasp of politics outside of electoralism, and thus your entire understanding to politics is essentially just gamification. Blue team. Red team. Blue needs more points than red. Get them (get people to vote) however necessary, without ever engaging with the realities of voters feeling their votes must be earned.

Β

I think that's why you view progressives as "wanting Trump to win" despite progressives just taking a more holistic approach than politics being gamification.

Β

No one says they want Team Red to get more points. Our entire argument is that voting is not simply gamification and we're more focused on the civic action of voting as a sociological phenomenon. We're more interested in the political science aspect of it, of what psychologically drives someone to vote and why, or to not vote.

Β

So it's not "oh so Biden gets the blame for red states". It's that people enduring material suffering don't have motivation to go vote, especially when asked to vote for someone who isn't offering some kind of avenue to improve and make better the very thing they're suffering from. If Republicans being awful was simply enough to drive voters, shouldn't Democrats win every election in places like Louisiana where the GOP actively oppresses Dem-base voters? Shouldn't turn-out in these kinds of states be at 95%+ for Dem-friendly demographics?

Β

So in the inverse, no one's trying to "deny Biden credit for blue states". Of course progressive governors or state parties passing good policies will help endear voters to Democrats as a brand. The only hurdle is that few swing states have progressive governors because corporate interests falsely convince Dems the median voter is R+10.

Β

The exception is that Biden can't be completely at odds with the progressive Dems on the state level. Sure,Β JB Pritzker's progressive policies likely will help drive turnout in election years for state Dems, and that'll have a positive effect for Biden (in a blue state). But does Gretchen Whitmer avoiding praising Israel to stay in the good graces of Arab American voters in Michigan do anything at the end of the day for Biden when he goes to pressers and actively praises the slaughtering of Gazan children by Israel? C'mon.

Wow, I am shocked yet another straight, white man does not care about the millions of women, LGBTQ people, and people of color in the US suffering under Trump. The leftist way. :clap3:

What does this have to do with Democracy? Representatives who were voted into office by their constituents voting for something in the House is quite literally the definition of Democracy. :rip:

Β

This even being up for a vote is stupid, though.

Curious as to why this was even given a downvote. Do they believe saying "from the river to the sea" should be considered a felony-level hate crime? :celestial5:

This schtick of just being nothing but contrarian takes wouldn't be as annoying when you do it if the average Biden liberal wasn't a racist, classist Western chauvinist.Β

Β

Resolutions to ban ideas and ideologies - let alone ones built on values Democrats claim to care about like anti-imperialism - exposes the claims of "caring about democracy" to be hollowed. Imagine if China passed a resolution condemning the view point that Ukraine deserves to not be invaded by Russia.Β :rip:
