What R&B music do y'all listen to and is it anything past the year 2010? I hate how people talk about the genre because you do not have be belting like you would on Sunday service on every R&B track. In fact, the whole whisper singer thing came from artist like Janet and Aaliyah who made predominantly R&B influenced music. There have been plenty of artist with less than stellar vocals to be successful in the genre and what N is doing sounds nothing like what SZA does. SZA has taken a singer-songwriter approach in music whereas N is trying to take us back to the late 90s and early 00s style. I think it works for her and it suits her voice.  R&B can be versatile and many women can be doing great in the genre at once as we've seen happen in the past.

I appreciate your post, you have a great point of view.  I feel a little differently.

SZA/Ariana Grande/Normani make similar music in some ways IMO.

SZA's Ex and Snooze - You can replace SZA singing with Ariana or Normani, and it wouldn't sound out of place at all.

A little unrelated- I listened to pop growing up and a lot of Britney Spears, so I am very familiar with what a bubblegum melodies sound like. Wild Side has that bubblegum melody to it, but it is dressed up behind a moody instrumental. Normani makes RnB, but it has this pop-ness to it. And I agree, late 90s/early 00s style like you say.

Summer Walker makes RnB too, but her RnB music- I do not like her stuff at all.

EDIT: Edited my post to be clearer

Fair points but why bring us back and not take us forward?

The older generation liked that sound, what guarantees us that nostalgic sounds will appeal to the newer generation of consumers?

Wild Side was excellent for me, the music video sold the song even more but on Fair there are moments that sound too autotuned and thats basically to fill the void of the vocals that are lacking.

Maybe I am thinking too deep but lets judge the product she releases when 1:59 is drops chile...

Music is like fashion. Its cyclical. What people grew up on is what inspires them. That's why we are seeing the Y2K sound and aesthetic circle back. I personally like the direction she's going in and I love the sound of the music. Nostalgia was a big selling point of WS as it interpolated a well known Aaliyah song.

Oh please. This site goes up for the most basic, bland stuff all the time. Can we start throwing positive energy towards her? I'll start. A week from now, we will be going up for 1:59 and we will be gagged by the video and we will be shocked that anybody ever doubted her once the album drops. She will have her moment.

I can already see myself listening to one of the hottest tracks being dropped this year.

Back on that vibe again (Back on that vibe again)
It's hard to find again (It's hard to find again)
****, we can't hide again (****, we can't hide again)
Ooh, ooh

Like ooo Normani girl you've done it again. WS who? Motivation who? Waves who?

Thank you. All I ever see is how Normani is "fumbling" or  how the people in here "don't agree" with her business moves as if any of the users in this thread have already had an artist rise to fame via their connections and work ethic. I challenge all the naysayers to pick up a PR or Talent Management job and see how successful your artist can be with the methods you all try to throw on Normani.

now as the quoted post states I've been speaking nothing but positivity over my sister because the better the first single does the better chance we have at not being shelved. So yall saying yall want something else and not supporting what yall "don't want" can have the opposite of the effect you wanted. 1:59 next week and we going for a top 40 debut. We can do that. All of that redwood singing ladies' songs won't last for 2 weeks. We can squeeze a spot in

You lost me a little when you said Normani or Ariana could do 'snooze', and I disagree with that. Sonically, that's not their pocket, so I don't see that. Secondly, you said that 'Wild Side' has a bubblegum pop melody behind a moody instrumental, which isn't true it's a R&B-sounding song that's inspired by the 90s. I just didn't agree with those points, but don't take it personal we all agree to disagree.
