She wrote it while touring in Irvine. We know that story and it makes perfect sense for that particular song. I’m sorry, but the fit between RFC as a song title and the song content/story, does not fit as well as Irvine. Nowhere near. I’m sure many would agree with me on this.

:)  RFC makes perfect sense to me and others so guess agree to disagree lol.

It’s either that, or the songs just aren’t good enough to click with emotionally for everybody. Everyone loves Sober. Everyone loves Maybe. People click with BTHE. Less people seem to connect to this new material compared to some of her older, emotional/personal tracks. So maybe it’s just that the new songs simply aren’t as good.

Then it’s too bad you have one less KC album to enjoy. Good luck with the next one.

Thanks for explaining. How is this conveyed in the lyrics and story of the actual song though? I don’t really think the song tells that story very well, that he was an impostor and she missed the signs.

Expand

I think a lot of it is open for interpretation, but to me the story is that Brandon was presenting himself as a successful and reliable man, but turned out to be broke and petty, hence the lyrics calling out him wanting the towels and her money and running his mouth behind her back. The “play cowboy” dig I think is the explicit “red flag”, basically saying all the cowboy stuff that she once thought was cool and exuded confidence was actually just a precursor to him abandoning his responsibilities to start a rodeo with her money.

Anyway... RFC is a cute lil bop. I like how it sounds old-timey with the western piano/saloon music. It's something different for Kelly. The live version is superior though, and I agree the title doesn't really fit with the lyrics (but whatever, it's not going to be a single anyway).

Can't wait for the standouts (Skip This Part, Down To You, Lighthouse and even Rock Hudson) to prove some of y'all wrong. (Though if I had to guess, you'd probably find something negative to say about those too :shakeno:)

“Irvine” from My December is an amazing song, but she never mentions the title or gives an explanation as to why it’s called that in the song. But that’s just me lol. :)

She did. She wrote it while lying in the bathroom of her hotel room in Irvine, CA after a show when she canceled a meet and greet because she was at her lowest point in life.

She doesn’t mention any of these details  (except for “as I lay here on this floor”) in the song though. We know the back story, but most people listening to this wouldn’t know.

Yes, but that that context fits the title. She’s very clearly singing about the lowest point in her life, she explicitly says she’s on lying on the floor.

RFC just doesn’t do that for me. Saying your ex has a bad attitude and plays pretend as a cowboy isn’t a red flag. The fact that the title of the song is reserved for the very last line is pretty damning of how little integrated it is into the song.

But, regardless, I wouldn’t care if the rest of the lyrics hit for me. Which they don’t. The arguably mundane criticism of the title is that I think the title sets up an interesting concept and I feel the lyrics of the song are just wildly uninteresting. So, it’s like, “Ugh, she had a great title idea with red flags and she could have listed them to make it feel more… complete but she didn’t.”

I have no issue with songs not mentioning the title at all. But the conversation here is more so that I (and I assume others) are disappointed with the song as a whole lyrically despite the anticipation of a cool concept the title provides.

See, I think RFC fits perfectly lol. Especially given the towels line and her saying he’s blaming her like usual (huge red flags) Most people don’t see the red flags until later so her mentioning it at the end is perfect. But that’s just me.

I think some people (not specifically saying you or anyone in particular) built it up to something that it wasn’t in their heads… I understand, it happens. But also at the same time, I, and others, agree that this title and the lyrics actually make sense.

but like I said, agree to disagree and we can all have our opinions.  :)

I think why those lines don’t fit for me is that it seems to be about how Brandon is acting post the during the divorce. Him taking her towels and money and blaming the split on her… can’t be red flags because his behavior after the split isn’t a precursor or a sign that they shouldn’t be together.

I mentioned it earlier, but one “red flag” you could allude to is that he called her political views out on Twitter in 2015 (well ahead of the divorce). That sharp disparity in world views probably bled into the relationship and would be an obvious red flag. That’s kinda the red flag I had in mind going into the song and she obviously didn’t take that route so it feels off.

But, like I said, even if the song title were different (let’s say it’s “Wild Wild West”), that wouldn’t really change my feelings towards the song. It’d remove my criticism about the title sure. But I still feel the song is generic lyrically and feels like a rehash of other songs: “go ahead and break my heart that’s fine” (mine) and “drag my name round town, I don’t mind” (red flag collector).

The album is starting to feel samey at this point. It’d be cool to see how she feels about unexpectedly being a single mother. How does that make her feel? Does she feel prepared to do it since she grew up with a single mom? There’s soooooooo many directions she could take this album in and it just feels stuck lyrically on one expression of, “Yeah, we’re divorced but I don’t mind cause I’m fine on my own.” And sure, say that, but that’s not enough to support an album.

I haven’t heard the whole album so maybe that’s in there. But we shall see. But I hope that at least clarifies what my issues are. It’s not just the title.

There are people in here writing novels because they thought a song title was misleading. That ain't it.

We've only heard 5 of 14 songs, and the 4 songs I listed are just the ones that I loved at Belasco.

You may like Chemistry, Magic, That's Right, My Mistake or High Road better... :michael:

you know you don't have to 1) respond 2) read.

you can just stick to not being on the forum and listen to the music just fine in your personal bubble.

anyways, i find rfc so disappointing. lyrically, it's not it. as many have mentioned she could've done something more with the title but we're left with nothing of value. it's going to be VERY interesting to see exactly how many of these songs she plays in the future.

i can't seem to find any of them worthy of staying on a future setlist except for mine and fkoh.

it's, for lack of a better word, sad how the live versions of the songs sound so much better than the studio versions.

i need this album out asap to figure out what the end goal was because it doesn't really seem therapeutic like i was thinking it would.

Wow… like stop trying to put words in my mouth. From the snippets I’ve heard it’s a fire track. Just because I’ve not liked some of the other tracks doesn’t mean the whole album will be obsolete for me.

I don’t agree with your opinion on the album? Okay, likewise you with mine? That’s fine. It subjective. So why do have to be a sarcastic about it? love and adore this woman more than you’ll ever know, doesn’t mean I’m gonna force feed myself to like certain tracks sheeesh :coffee2:

Don’t understand why people have to be low-key rude. It’s not really okay. So do better, please!

On another note. Listening to RFC, FKOH, Mine, Me and IHL on repeat today. And FKOH is truly the standout hit of the five tracks released. Such an ethereal and catchy ear worm.

I would rank the songs currently:

1. FKOH

2. IHL

3. Mine

4. RFC

5. Me
