Pink Matter Posted December 30, 2017 Author Posted December 30, 2017 Top 100 Singles Singles 15-11 15) Vince Staples|Yeah Right (feat. KUČKA and Kendrick Lamar) I'm loving the fact that Vince is taking risks with each release and is trying something new. With Big Fish Theory, and more importantly Yeah Right, Vince decides to go down the electronic/dance route with the assistance from fellow West Coast rapper Kendrick Lamar, KUČKA, as well as PC producer SOPHIE and past collaborator Flume. All five of them come together to deliver an electronic knock that switches up the beat at different points throughout the song. Vince's second verse is great but Kendrick kinda bodied him That being said, everyone delivered. 14) Earl St. Clair|Bad Love I unfortunately did not see much love for this R&B newcomer so I have to show him some love. Don't have much to say except this is one of my favorite jams of the year. An R&B bop, Bad Love shows Earl being a bit braggadocios stating his different qualities, and the things he can do to his would-be lover, as long as she accepts the bad lovin' he's ready to give. 13) Perfume Genius|Slip Away ahhhh what a wonderful song It has this magical, almost fairy like vibe to it (I'm probably thinking of the video), that's almost jovial. It's not a bop, but it's certainly bombastic and is packed with tons of energy. The song is well written and the lyrics are incredibly relatable (especially for all you gays out there). I love the vocal effects being used and the various instruments used to make dissonant sounds all throughout the song, as well as in the songs outro. Just an overall great track. 12) Cherry Glazerr|Nuclear Bomb I know this is your standard "how to make an indie rock record" record, but it's still a damn good song. For the most part, I like my Rock music to have either great instrumentation and either a rhythmic or dreamy vibe to it, and Nuclear Bomb gave me the former. The instrumentation is sublime and I love how it starts out calmly and then hits you when the chorus comes around. The guitar work is great all throughout but the highlight is the outro where the guitarist goes all out, ending the song on a high note. 11) Kelela|Blue Light Okay, so she kinda ended every alt/indie R&B girl this year if we're being honest. Pretty much snatched twigs' spot and her scalp. Being serious though, I wish I could articulate why I think Blue Light is so fantastic to me in a non-basic "yass she slayed me/she did that/she ended me"/etc. way but she really did do that. I love the trend of blending R&B with electronic music because it enhances both, giving a bit more edge to both genres. Her vocals are elegant and light, and manage to glide over the production seamlessly. Her vocals getting slight mods in the chorus' give the song the extra edge to make it even better. Top 100 Singles Singles 10-1 10) Tyler, The Creator|911/Mr. Lonely (feat. Frank Ocean and Steve Lacy) This song (as well as Who Dat Boy) was a big surprise for me. I never listened to Cherry Bomb, so I'm not sure if this musical transition was being hinted at, so for me to hear this after listening to WOLF felt like a pretty big jump. It's one that I welcomed with open arms though. While Who Dat Boy bumps hard, 911/Mr. Lonely had much more meaning to it. The first half is very light and upbeat while the second half takes a more darker tone. That being said, both songs show Tyler rapping about very depressing topics, mostly loneliness and how his material wealth isn't bringing him happiness. When I first listened to the song, I didn't pay much attention to the lyrics on 911 like I did for Mr. Lonely, just jamming to the warm, jazzy beats I know better now, but I suppose that sort of goes along with the song, no? Hiding the loneliness by showing others how much fun you're having. And isn't that how most people dealing with depression act too? By hiding how they're really feeling and putting on a show for others. I don't know what exactly is going on in Tyler's head or what he's dealing with, but if this song is anything to go by, I hope he finds a way to cope with his issues 9) Big K.R.I.T.|Big Bank (feat. T.I.) I'm not one to hate on mainstream rap/mumble rap music because I believe there is a time and place for everything. However, when you've got rappers like KRIT getting overlooked for artists with barely a fifth of his talent, you can't do much but be upset. Big KRIT is one of the best Southern rappers to debut this decade and he shows it on this track right here. From the very beginning, KRIT is spazzing like his career is on the line and is going toe to toe with one of the South's Rap legends, T.I., who hasn't sounded this good in years. This song is hype, high energy, and doesn't let up for a second, with both guys coming through with dope lines. 8) Frank Ocean|Chanel What did he do? THAT After escaping the sophomore slump curse with Blonde last summer, I never expected Frank to drop more new music so quickly. But three months into the year, we get a track most likely from the Blonde sessions in Chanel. Filled with so many braggadocios quotables (my guy pretty like a girl>>>>>>) and the slight unconventional song structure similar to many of the tracks on Blonde, Chanel ended up being one of the biggest, and best musical drops of the year. 7) Susanne Sundfør|Undercover This song lowkey has been sliding under the radar, quietly slaying me but kind of going unnoticed by critics alike and oddly enough has not been getting the love I figured it would get on here! This song was an instant hit, grabbing me with it's beautiful lyrics and Susanne's wonderful vocals. Backed by only a piano, Susanne sings about being let down by the ones you put your love and trust in. I think these feelings she's expressing are ones that is universal; something I'm sure we've all felt. The outro is haunting. 6) Yellow Days|That Easy One of my favorite new discoveries of the year, Yellow Days has this bluesy indie rock vibe but what impresses me the most is the soul you can hear in his voice. It's very gravelly and full and it makes you think the guy has seen and been through some things that'll shave a few years off your life. That Easy shows that, at the age of 18 no less, he is fully aware of his experiences and has no problem sharing it with the world in a way that would put some artists years older than him to shame. 5) Sheer Mag|Need to Feel Your Love When I first checked out Sheer Mag's EPs last year I wasn't too impressed if I'm being honest. Coming into this was like a punch in the face though. The guitar riffs lowkey slaps and has a bounce to it that keeps me coming back for more. I love the female vocalist on here, as well as on the rest of their album. It's filled with a lot of spunk and fire that gives the music even more kick. This was a surprise if I ever heard one and is something I'm glad I got the chance to hear before the year came to a close. 4) Sampha|Reverse Faults Like I said in my Blue Light write up, I love it when artists fuse R&B and electronic music together because it provides both mediums with lots of edge. Reverse Faults, to me, is proof of that. From the very second the song started, I knew I was in for a treat. To be honest, I'm not even sure how I could describe the actual song. Everything about it sounds so epic and I love Sampha's vocal delivery on this song. The chorus would have to be the highlight of the song for me because the production sort of explodes during that part while in the verses, it feels more subdued. From the very first time I listened to the song I was blown away, and each and every time I listen to it, I always have the tendency to play it over and over again. 3) Gorillaz|Andromeda (feat. D.R.A.M.) I know we're all supposed to be dragging and lashing Gorillaz for filth this era but I can't bring myself to do it. At least not to Andromeda. Initially, I was underwhelmed by the singles Damon dropped this year outside of Saturn Barz, which was my favorite of the batch. But then out of no where, Andromeda hit me. It was quite sudden when it happened. After it hit me, I listened to it again to make sure I was hearing the right and ended up replaying the song tons more. I have no idea why I didn't feel this way before, but now I feel that Andromeda is one of the best pop tunes to be released this year. It has just the perfect amount of Damon so as not to be overshadowed by his guest features (I could barely tell where D.R.A.M. was on the song). I'm a sucker for songs with a spacey vibe so Andromeda also gets points there. Ultimately, I'm glad I stuck with the song because it was one of the most rewarding songs I've listened this year (this is why you never write off music after one listen). 2) The War on Drugs|Pain This is probably the most gorgeous sounding song I've listened to this year. The guitar riffs at the beginning of the song really set the tone for the rest of the song and helps me get lost in an absolutely beautiful soundscape. For many people, the songs on A Deeper Understanding tend to drag on for longer than they should, but that's one of the many things I love about this song and the album as a whole. Throughout the song, Adam is singing about pain, and the various ways it's being felt; the pain that lingers even after you wake up from sleep, the pain of losing a loved one, the physical pain of a broken back, and even the pain that comes from being unable to resist change. The last part especially got to me, as throughout the year I've had to learn the hard way that there are things that are out of my control and trying to fight change would do more harm than good. All in all, this made for quite the catharic listen, for both myself and Adam for sure. 1) Toro y Moi|Girl Like You Here it is. My #1 single of 2017. This song encompasses everything I've come to love in Chaz's music. It incorporates elements of chillwave from Causers of This, electronic R&B music from Anything In Return, and the hip hop style beats from his mixtape Samantha, all of which are among my favorite projects he's released. This song came out at the right time too, making it one of my go to summer songs this year because of its catchy production. As soon as I heard the warbled synths in the beginning of the song, I knew I was in for a ride. And I'm always a sucker for a good piano riff so the way this song started, progressed, and ended, coupled with it being the perfect length giving it great replay value, made it my favorite song this year.

My thots: I've been meaning to listen to Gabriel, your description is interesting so I'll have to check him out. Tunnel Vision is certainly an interesting choice for Rina 71 Charger was an unexpected slay from miss Loreen, the album was cute but that was a SONG. I feel like I'd appreciate Love more if it were by someone else, like I love it but Lana has so much better so Los Ageless is a cute girl, cute next to the rest of Masseduction. I kinda like all SZAs singles equally but at a push I'd probs go with LG too. Humble is a bop American dream stomp stomp stomps on call the police Excited for the top 15, I have high expectations. You should also check out his EP too. Six Eight is such an amazing song. TV is underrated so I had to give ha some love I agree, there are better tracks on the album, but Love sets the tone for the album well and also represents some of the themes the album goes for. If you're saying LA is the worst song on the album, then Sugarboy would like to have a few words with you And american dream really is that song. I feel most people were ctp>ad but I always felt the opposite too. 3 hours ago, Maddox said: Just listened to her album and it was cute, a few bops here and there. Wicked Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 Yeah Right is great, but not even in my top 5 of Big Dick Theory. Nice songs list tho I ave to check out the ones I didn't hear. I am sleeping on this Krit album.
Kiss It Better Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 Chanel yesss king Frank did THAT an anthem
World Eater Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 Yeah Right's production bothers me a bit, but only because it almost feels too predictable for something made by SOPHIE (does that even make sense?). The song still goes off tho I'm pleasantly surprised to see Girl Like You top the list, great sing Slip Away, Nuclear Bomb, Blue Light, 911/Mr. Lonely, Undercover, Need to Feel Your Love (a SONG ) and Pain (although it's one of my least favorite tracks from A Deeper Undestanding )
TRF. Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 Yeah Right, Andromeda, Chanel and Slip Away and ofc Blue Light
montrealxo Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 745, Chanel, Andromeda, Girl Like You >>>>> I'm gonna check out the ones I haven't heard. I listened to the Earl St. Clair cut and it was dope. I think our tastes are similar. I need to see whats up with Perfume Genius too. I've been seeing a lot about him lately
soml Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 Pain is an amazing song, nice to see it this high
Tom Vercetti Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 A massive top 15. I wasn't expecting Andromeda to be top 3, but def my favorite from the gorillaz playlist. I like most of the songs here actually (other than Sheer Mag whom I still can't get into). Girl Like You is a different #1 than most which is something cool to see. A Boo Boo highlight too.

Toro/GLY definitely flew under the radar but I think that's because he doesn't get the same indie hype other artists do. MP2K Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 I have to give Earl and BIG Krit a shot one day. Yeah Right (I mean Vince let him and used Kendrick as the secret weapon/for more buzz ) Slip Away, GOD LIGHT, Reverse Faults, Andromeda, Pain, See I can rock with that #1 pic and it's unpredictable. I do like Toro. Undercover is ****ing beautiful, didn't make my list though. I did give it some good spins early on though Great list!

And I'd say if you want to get into KRIT, his latest album is a great place to start (he's got a whole bunch of great mixtapes too). Big Bank is a standout for sure.
