Pink Matter Posted January 4, 2018 Author Posted January 4, 2018 (edited) Top 50 Best Albums of 2017 Albums 50-46 50) Gorillaz|Humanz Genre: Electronic, Art Pop All my life All my life Beam a light on me I am a satellite And I can't get back without you I know this isn't an album that most would like seen on any best of list, but I happened to have enjoyed Gorillaz latest efforts. A mish mash of different collaborators, ranging from Kelela, Danny Brown, and Kali Uchis, to the likes of Grace Jones, De La Soul, and Anthony Hamilton, among other artists, Humanz can be described more aptly as a playlist rather than as an album, because for the most part, none of these songs seem to fit together due to the conflicting styles of production on every single song. We go from the electronic, almost techno-like production on Ascension to the Disco/Funk-inspired Strobelite, to the EDM/Dancehall mix of Saturnz Barz all within the span of ten minutes. And this is more or less how the rest of the album goes as well. Not only that, but there are a handful of songs on this album that are quite simply atrocious and drag the quality of the album down (see Momentz, Carnival, Let Me Out, We Got The Power ). So why do I have this cluster**** of an album that contains some of the worst songs I've listened to all year sitting in my top 50? Well, despite the number of missteps Damon took on this album, I can say that of the songs that I do enjoy, I enjoy them a lot. Like, a lot a lot. Moreover, the drag about this being a playlist instead of an album doesn't really bother me all that much. As long as the songs are good, I could care less how cohesive or not cohesive it is as a whole. And the fact that Damon took a more political approach to his music, or rather made a response to what has been going on in US politics over the course of the past two years, that made the music all the more better for me. Regardless of how bad some of the songs were, I can't deny that there are songs that I enjoy coming back to quite often. Hopefully the next Gorillaz album is better received. Listen to: Ascension (feat. Vince Staples), Strobelite (feat. Peven Everett), Busted and Blue, She's My Collar (feat. Kali Uchis) 49) Susanne Sundfør|Music For People In Trouble Genre: Art Pop, Chamber Folk, Baroque Pop Double trouble, neither are to blameOne wins the round but we will both lose the game I've seen this album appear very high on a few others best of's and I can understand why. The instrumentation is quite beautiful, as are her vocals and the song-writing on this album is powerful and dense. Lyrically, the album makes references to failing relationships, war and drones, and our (or at least her) general insignificance on this planet, among other topics that leave me exhausted after finishing a listen. Exhausted because the album as a whole is simply a lot to take in. In addition, the album seems like a response to what is happening in the world currently (at a macro and micro level). So overall, it just makes me think about the way in which my life is going and how that compares to people who are dealing with the problems Susanne is addressing. In the end, the title is quite fitting. Despite the lyrical content, the music itself is quite calming and therapeutic. The piano arrangements and the use of an acoustic guitar help to give off a serene and tranquil feel. All in all, this sounds like I'm praising Susanne and her latest effort, so why is it so low? Well, I don't really listen to it that much The album at it's heart is embedded in folk music, and that's not really my thing. So I haven't really gone back to this album all that much. That being said, I can objectively recognize the quality of this body of work, and understand that this a well put together project. Plus, Undercover is a SONG so I that more than makes up for the rest of the album. Listen to: Reincarnation, Good Luck, Bad Luck, Mountaineers (feat. John Grant) 48) Mura Masa|Mura Masa Genre: Electronic, Pop, Hip-Hop When you touch me in that way, I just don't know what to do, loveI'm so in love Another album that some may not have considered for their best of's, but this was one that I quite enjoyed listening to throughout the latter half of 2017. It's kind of hard to describe the sound of this album. It's considered an electronic album, but it doesn't really sound like one, or at least not like what I consider electronic music. Which I suppose works to Alex's favor. Most of the electronic music that I listened to throughout 2017 was pretty monotonous, one-note, samey, and as a result, left me rather unsatisfied. With Mura Masa's s/t album, despite the lack of the familiar electronic production I've come to know, none of the previous adjectives applied here. With as a many varying styles as there were collaborators, Mura Masa is an eclectic listen that kept my attention from beginning to end. The collaborators were all used well, from A$AP Rocky's effortless flow on the hip-hop inspired, air-horn assisted Love$ick to Charli's and NAO's infectious vocals on the tropical house inspired 1 Night and Firefly, to the mellow drawls provided by Damon Albarn on the slow-paced closer Blu. While there are some tracks that I don't feel the need to go back to, the good far outweighs the bad and leaves me content every time. Listen to: Nuggets (feat. Bonzai), NOTHING ELSE! (feat. Jamie Lidell), Blu (feat. Damon Albarn) 47) Aminé|Good For You Genre: Pop Rap Some days we get Sundays but most days the rain comes down And I feel like I'm bound to drown I think something that is missing from current Rap music is just an essence of fun and being carefree. Not necessarily party, turn up Rap/Trap music that we have running the airwaves, but something that you can get lost in and let your worries run away aimlessly. That's where Aminé and his debut album come in. With Good For You, we get a set of tracks that show Aminé at his finest. He's confident, charming, carefree, and bold as shown on the intro track Veggies where proclaims himself to be Andre 3000's prodigy and Wedding Crashers, with assistance from Offset of Migos, which acts as a big FU to his ex's. Aminé is also introspective and thoughtful at times, discussing his relationships with his family, his hometown, drinking issues, and even gentrification on tracks in the latter half of the album. And I think that's what I enjoy the most. With Good For You, Aminé shows almost every part of who he is in a way that is easy to listen to. While you listen to him rap over a soundscape that hearkens back to Acid Rap Chance the Rapper, you realize that he's not just talking about fluff, but also depicting issues that have been weighing him down for some time. Listen to: Veggies (feat. Ty Dolla $ign), Turf, Dakota, Beach Boy 46) Lil' Uzi Vert|Luv Is Rage 2 Genre: Trap, Alt. Hip-Hop I'm basically saying I'm coolerGet Dior discounts from my cougarBack in the sixth grade I got them bad gradesI was in love with my tutor So I'm not really the type to hate on this current wave of mumble rap like most Hip-Hop listeners but I'm definitely not the one to defend it. To be honest, I try to actively avoid most of these kinds of artists because 9 times out of 10, the music they put is just not something that I like to listen to. But I suppose that's what makes Uzi special. I tried out Uzi's album on a whim because I had this inclination that he would end up being different to his contemporaries and I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard. The highlight isn't really the content on the album (although I appreciate that the content is more varied than that of his contemporaries) but his delivery and the style of production he's rapping on. They're both chaotic, slightly unconventional, animated, and if nothing else, interesting. From rapping about his money and his possessions on 444+222, to crooning about his past relationships on The Way Life Goes, to rapping about feeling numb and not needing love after a past breakup on Feelings Mutual, to rapping about his mother on Dark Queen, to even rapping about substance abuse, suicide and betrayal on his hit song XO TOUR Llif3, Luv Is Rage 2 makes one for one hell of a ride. Listen to: 444+222, Feelings Mutual, Neon Guts (feat. Pharrell Williams), 20 Min Edited January 4, 2018 by Pink Matter

montrealxo Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 didn't know susanne sundfor until i saw you or someone else have Undercover on your singles list and checked it out. very florence-y. i'm going to have to give it more listens the rest is everything. especially mura masa. such an underrated debut
theblackestday Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 I'm glad you can at least recognize the talent that is Music for People in Trouble. Not everyone has that Humanz is indeed very good, but didn't age that well, I regret placing it relatively high in my list tbh. Agree with basically everything you said about it (except for the Momentz, Carnival and Let Me Out slander; they're good and there's much worse on the album ) Haven't heard the other albums. Caroline is THAT bop though.
World Eater Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 MFPIT is excellent Didn't really care for the rest of the albums but there's some really good stuff on all of them
Tom Vercetti Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 MFPiT's my fave in this selection. Never cared for Amine and wasn't into Mura Musa's album. Gorillaz had potential but not enough standouts.

It might be low on my list but the quality of the album is very high. It just has very low replay value so I couldn't rank it any higher. It's got a lot of folk and acoustic influences just so you know. Glad you like the others too! 1 hour ago, theblackestday said: I'm glad you can at least recognize the talent that is Music for People in Trouble.
