USA wants to be perceived as the main character of the world so this is not surprising

Width x length.

But there are some standard paper sizes like Letter, A4, Legal, A3, A2 etc.

Because you should lead with the number that constrains your range the most.  This is why YYYY/MM/DD is superior.  Until you know the year the range is infinity.  However in a world where the year is often assumed to be the current year, leading with month constrains the range to a 30/31 day period as opposed to day which constrains the range to an 11 month period.

Why would it be the current year?

If I'm  booking a ticket right now it's likely to be next year ( but it might still be this year).

See above.  The smallest unit has no context until you learn the largest unit.  So you should lead with the number that provides the greatest context.

I understand how this could be more useful for things like database sorting, but in everyday use this seems like the most logical approach to me :michael: Who cares about the largest time unit if it doesn't change for at least 365 days?

Delete this and let them continue to be bewildered by the illiterate Americans and our crumbling empire of non-standardized paper sheets. It's more fun this way

Go ahead and google the word "often" and get back to me with your findings.

but even in your example the year can fairly be assumed.  If you are booking a flight for June 17, it's extremely unlikely it's in a year of 2026 or later.

This same logic applies to month as well. Most people are aware what month they're in, what requires the most immediate/frequent clarity is the actual day.

They love those weird ass numbers.

Inches and feet take the cake tho. Next level stupid. Or temperature... nothing makes sense over there.

Maybe but that's what we grew up learning

You've seen most of the 345,992,498 Americans?

And in those contexts it is generally perfectly fine to just provide the day.  Why even bother providing a month and year if unnecessary?  But it's a little silly to design a date system where you assume month and year are unnecessary in all contexts.

Tell me why this one American lady came all the way to an Australian shopping centre, to argue with my security guard ex that they've labelled all

their levels wrong, because she couldn't fathom that level 1 was the level ABOVE the ground floor?!!

It was upsetting to me when I found out there's a difference between an Imperial teaspoon and a Metric teaspoon. Don't get me started on cups...buy some scales

Pretty much the same energy as complaining about American paper sizes.  I guess lack of self awareness is a global phenomenon.
