Anthinos Posted May 21 Posted May 21 This is not just bad for Joe Biden or the USA, but for the entire West. The West's reaction is one-sided and embarrassing. Especially Germany, Austria and the USA. I've said it before, this war is the final nail in the coffin for the Western powers and their global influence. 4
Letemtalk Posted May 21 Posted May 21 There are plenty of precedents here, probably the most recent one being the Bosnian Genocide. Quote In 2005, the United States Congress passed a resolution declaring that the Serbian policies of aggression and ethnic cleansing meet the terms defining genocide.[15] Not just the United States, there were convictions for genocide in German courts, but since this is the US President, the ruling of the United States Congress is the important one here. If we want to compare Gaza with those civilian deaths: According to the ICTY Demographic Unit, an estimated 69.8% or 25,609 of the civilians killed in the war were Bosniak According to the RDC, 82% or 33,071 of the civilians killed in the war were Bosniak, with a minimum of 97,207 casualties, military and civilian, for all sides involved But of course there is more to a genocide than just killing of civilians, it includes the destruction of civilian infrastructure and the destruction of the history and culture of the people. - Destruction of schools and all of it's universities. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/1/24/how-israel-has-destroyed-gazas-schools-and-universities https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/06/world/middleeast/gaza-schools-damaged-destroyed.html - Destruction of multiple cultural heritage sites in Gaza. https://www.theartnewspaper.com/2023/11/28/bombing-of-gaza-has-damaged-or-destroyed-more-than-100-heritage-sites-ngo-report-reveals https://www.museumsassociation.org/museums-journal/news/2024/04/unesco-verifies-damage-to-43-cultural-heritage-sites-in-gaza/ Quote As of 8 April 2024, Unesco has verified damage to 43 sites – 10 religious sites, 24 buildings of historical and/or artistic interest, two depositories of movable cultural property, three monuments, one museum and three archaeological sites. Kassi Posted May 21 Posted May 21 11 hours ago, New Edition said: This is a legit question but what exactly is this strange pact between the Israeli state and the American government? Does the Israeli gov have something on America? Because this weird relationship has gone of over several presidencies and decades. Long story short, after WWII, the US took on the role of stabilizing the world. In Europe and Asia, this meant the Marshall Plan; in the Middle East, it was a patchwork of policies involving different countries. For Israel specifically, the outline of their relationship with the US evolved like this: Sympathy —> Cold War Proxy —> Peace Partner —> Counterterrorism Cooperation A more detailed breakdown: Sympathy (1948-1960s): Post-Holocaust sympathy and recognition of Israel in 1948, with the start of US economic aid to support the new state. Cold War Proxy (1960s-1970s): Cold War dynamics and preventing Soviet influence in the Middle East, leading to the first shipments of US military aid, especially after the Six-Day War in 1967. Peace Partner (1970s-1990s): Brokering peace between Egypt and Israel at the Camp David Accords in 1978, resulting in significant US military security commitments to Israel to ensure its security. Counterterrorism Cooperation (2000s-Present): Counterterrorism cooperation and advanced military support, with ongoing US military aid, including funding for missile defense systems like Iron Dome. (Of course, the underlying motivation here is that the US has a vested interest in Middle Eastern stability due to oil… which is also why we work with the Egypt and Saudi Arabia) 4

The argument that Israel and it's supporters use is that those civilian deaths in Israel are caused by bombings which target Hamas HQ which is also reffered as "collateral damage". Israel bombings, are reported by US intelligence as 40% "dumb bombs". So in other words more similar to the deaths in Ukraine than in Bosnia. While in Srebrenica ~8,000 civilians in few weeks alone were massacred by gunshots by the army deliberately. If what Russia has been doing in Ukraine is not genocide neither is what Israel has been doing and vice versa if Israel is not committing a genocide neither is Russia. Biden can't have it both ways. La Reina Posted May 22 Posted May 22 It's definitely a genocide and anyone arguing semantics in here is pathetic. This man is likely going to lose his re-election bid and Trump is even more pro-Israel which makes all of this so ******* tragic
awesomepossum Posted May 23 Posted May 23 (edited) On 5/20/2024 at 9:51 PM, Kassi said: War Crimes. There's a pretty well established convention for adjudicating a wide range of War Crimes. Here are some relevant ones: Deliberate Attacks on Civilians: Prohibited under Article 51 of the Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions. Indiscriminate Use of Weapons: Addressed by the Geneva Conventions and the Hague Conventions, as well as specific treaties like the Convention on Cluster Munitions. Murder and Torture of Prisoners of War: Prohibited under the Third Geneva Convention. Forced Deportation or Transfer of Populations: Covered under the Fourth Geneva Convention. Hostage-Taking: Prohibited by Article 34 of the Fourth Geneva Convention. Use of Child Soldiers: Addressed by the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict. Destruction of Cultural Property: Prohibited by the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict. Blockades Causing Starvation: Addressed under Article 54 of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions. Rape and Sexual Violence: Prohibited under Article 27 of the Fourth Geneva Convention and the Rome Statute of the ICC. Unlawful Requisition or Looting: Addressed by Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention. Genocide is a very specific thing. And calling every war with civilians casualties one dilutes the meaning of the word. Why didn't you include the definition of genocide in your list?? Because then we could read it and see that what Israel is doing in Palestine is very much a genocide: Genocide: any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group, as such: (a) Killing members of the group; (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. Src: Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, Article 2 According to your backwards logic, we should wait until every Palestinian is killed. THEN we can call it what it was, past tense. Once every person is dead already. Like this is some f$*@)(% comment section flame war. Like anyone cares that you and your ilk will 'admit you were wrong' after Israel kills every person in Gaza. This is REAL LIFE you pos. Call it what it is NOW. Edited May 23 by awesomepossum 4 2
