Falling Forever is gonna be one of those songs, that is objectively amazing, but some of the production is too muddled for me to completely get into it.

French Exit is cute :giraffe:

I gotta ask, if these are basic, what are some other songs/artists that have an album that sounds like this?

Most mainstream girls aren't gonna be making some experimental album and I think Dua's first 2 albums show that lol

I think a lot of my disappointment with this album it's partially because of my expectations. I expected something way edgier, and more experimental than… that. She truly tricked me with the whole "psychedelic" sound and Houdini being her best song ever. As I said, the album is not bad, it just feels very basic and safe, which is what I should've actually expected from her, just a fun generic pop album.

Excited to see so many positive reviews, in 10m it'll be available for me too :hippo:

I wish instead of "French Exit" and "Anything for love" there would be another TS and H , something more harder sounding

The flute in Maria is a great addition

Can we now adress the mentions of Massive Attack, Ray of Light, Fleetwood Mac and UK rave because I'm actually curious what happened there? Like what was the point of all that? This is just a good pop album. There was no need to hype it as something else when it's not...

I have learn not to take those subjective reviews of people seriously cause clearly it is not happening there haha

There are songs which could be used as inspiration and somehow they missed them. The Time Is Now by Moloko for Maria for example, the guitar and bass is very similar

I need a 5 minute version of Anything For Love with a breakdown and a black church choir.

Maria already being so overrated. It's not QUITE a skip, but it's close to being one.

My final thoughts on this album is that it is probably her best album musically, but her least ambitious album commercially. There isn't a bad track on the whole thing, but it definitely is lacking the big overdramatised moments that make blockbuster albums stand out.

She doesn't try anything new sonically, despite the Kevin & Danny team-up, but she is definitely still making worthwhile music that puts her leagues above the Ava's and Bebe's and such.

I think it'll be just enough to keep goodwill on her side for this era but it will be hard to imagine that she wouldn't go back to having proper management and A&R for the next era, I think she leaned on herself too hard too early in her career. There is a very obvious lack of commercial finesse in these songs despite the intention of it being a blockbuster pop album.

Regardless I'll still be listening to it all summer. Watcha Doing is a smash hit that has (so far) gotten away. Should have been the lead :matty:

I think Happy For You is really pretty. Something about the lyrics doesn't land with me. But i like the melody and production.

Other than the lack of adlibs there are so many songs that have so much potential to be something way bigger: a whistle on Maria, a guitar solo on Whatcha Doing, a key change on Falling Forever, AFL having more than 1 verse :rip: it's like a lot of them are 9s but could've been 11s

Idk if that's completely accurate. While singles wise, i will agree that her previous albums have stronger options, i would be much more willing, if i was in the US, to walk to target and buy this album than her previous efforts.

This. Everything is just missing that final touch. Like they put the bones of these amazing songs together but they needed a proper hitmaker producer in the studio to give them that last touch

I wouldn't say she didn't try anything new sonically. There are several moments on this album when I felt like the production wasn't "as obvious" as it seemed at first glance. It's just not in your face, it's sprinkled here and there...

I do wonder, however, if the direction of the album changed and these songs were stripped from those "psychodelic" elements she mentioned and turned into that beachy, summer vibe. Even the album's cover and those promo pics don't really fit with the visuals she was presenting before Illusion. TS and Houdini MVs, single covers and performances so far didn't really scream "I'm on the island somewhere in late July". Especially her performances hinted at something more darker. I guess we will never know unless demos and another 50-something outtakes leak at some point.

There is no such thing as an 11 unless your measurements are from 1 or 0 to 11. If you are calling them 9s i'm assuming you ADORE this album.

i would believe this if the single covers for TS and Houdini weren't shot on the same day as the album cover. she has always said the album felt red and blue in her head, im guessing the first two singles and maybe falling forever? are more dark/red and the others like french exit and maria are more summery and blue. i just think the album was marketed very poorly from the way she talked about it to the visuals feeling a bit incoherent even though they were all planned at the same time.

The Houdini and TS visuals and the album cover were all shot together, so this is was somehow always the plan

People need to get over this idea that the album changed midway, like seriously. It's so delusional.
