VAMPIRE

Average: 6.82

High Score: 10 (@supaspaz, @a_d_22)

Low score: 1 (@creativity., @Achilles.)

While it would certainly be juicy if this heavy-handed yet propulsive lead single from Guts was about Olivia Rodrigo’s supposed feud with Taylor Swift, it is by all indications a dig at an older man who took advantage of her. (According to fans, there are two potential exes who could be the subject: producer Adam Faze and DJ Zack Bia.) A #1 hit in half a dozen countries, including the US, “Vampire” was also embraced by the Grammys, where it received three nominations, and was named the best song of the year by critics at Vulture and The New York Times. The voters in this rate were Team Fame Fucker, however, putting a stake through “Vampire” before the countdown is even halfway over.

Best bit: “You called them crazy, God, I hate the way I called 'em crazy too”

ATRL says…: “As much as I don’t wanna like this song, that bridge is fire and she puts a fantastic image in my head with this one,” @a_d_22 wrote in one of the nicer comments. @glitch also enjoyed the song, but chided, “Olivia, girl, let's talk about breath control…”  @Ewan Chaos found it “funny to follow a song where she actually sounds natural cursing (‘Bad Idea Right’) with a song where the swearing sounds so forced and clunky! I feel the exact same way as ‘Driver's License,’ but this one is definitely better than DL with the second half.” @Alldeezy “never liked her slow songs.” And @Achilles. said just about the cruelest thing I could possibly imagine: “This shit has fewer redeeming qualities than ‘ME!’ or ‘You Need To Calm Down.’”

You've got to give Olivia credit: she got you all chattering with this one!

I HATE the swearing! It's so forced and unpleasant and I feel the same way about a lot of recent Taylor songs too tbh

I wasn't expecting Vampire out so soon at all, especially when it was the only stable single from GUTS:michael:

I'M THE ONE

Average: 6.87

High Score: 9 (@kandicha, @creativity.)

Low score: 1 (@Born to Run)

What if Meredith Grey’s “pick me, choose me, love me” speech was a song with a spare, apprehensive beat vaguely reminiscent of Beyoncé’s “Mine”? Enter Victoria Monét, head over heels in unrequited love, begging a man to finally notice that she’s the one – though at least she’s got a sense of humor about the desperation of her plight.

Best bit: “I could be riding horseback towards you/Slow motion on a beach, titties bouncin' and everything”

ATRL says…: “This builds up but then kinda goes nowhere?” @glitch shrugged. @Alldeezy compared Victoria to the “female Weeknd in this song.”

I feel like, in every This Was... rate, there's a major single that proves divisive with voters and bombs out early. "Anti-Hero" finished #57 last year.

"I'm the One" tied with the next song, by the way, but missed out on the upper half of the countdown because it got no 10's!

You only gave four 10's. Two Amaarae tracks and two Olivia tracks.

Vampire actually grew on me as I was listening to it for the rate.

@Achilles., what are your thoughts?! I've been missing you in this thread.

Vampire sweetie I'm so sorry

Stop (Askin' Me 4Shyt) is kinda boring and repetitive. My comment may have indicated otherwise but I quite liked I'm The One. Out too soon I fear.

I've never understood why Vampire is so divisive. Personally, I think Olivia does ballads way better than pop rock, which often feels quite contrived and try hard. Vampire feels very her. I do think the big mistake she made was thinking people had kept up with who she was dating at this point. The whole relationship controversy worked the first time around, but no one knows that random man that Vampire is about.

Well, no one really knew about Joshua Bassett either. That’s why every publication had an explainer after DL blew up. But ultimately, a song needs to be able to stand in its own apart from context. And I think “Vampire” does!

True but the whole love triangle/potential cheating drama was something you could get your teeth into. You're right though, Vampire is good without any drama attached to it

I (clearly) dislike Vampire so I'm happy to have it out already, but the fact that it did so well and continued to have massive longevity (at least here in the States) proves that song just clicked for people, regardless of who the song was about. Do I wish it flopped entirely & BIR was the smash hit? Yeah!

I need more Olivia to go, but this update also looked good.

Half the Olivia songs are out! Some of you are acting like she’s untouched.
