It was considered a success at the time under those parameters and it also told studios that Gaga was a draw. Why do you think she's getting paid $12 million (same Margot got for Barbie) for House of Gucci? Warner Bros. doesn't do charity. They're only going to pay what they think they will bring to the box office. Gaga managing to pull so many people even with a movie that ultimately wasn't very well received, and also having an acclaimed performance that proved she was more than ASIB, ultimately lead her to JFAD. It was a success, especially in terms of what it did for Gaga's career.

Konril Posted February 26 Posted February 26 It's not like the Liddos put Gaga in nominations and awards contention, but by the members of the entertainment industry. 1

wigglytuffer Posted February 26 Posted February 26 Every role Gaga's had she's been the talking point and lead of the production. AHS: Hotel was Mother Monster on steroids and she got the GG for that I think? ASIB was unbelievably huge and cemented her into the general public's mind as an actress, and she carried HOG. I don't think it's crazy at all to place her in award show conversations when everything she's done so far has been so well received. She's a one-of-a-kind artist that's managed to transition into acting flawlessly! 3 2

RT consensus are all over the place. Y’all follow film (as of late, anyway) so that shouldn’t be news. Feel free to read through the critic thread if you need reminders of just how mixed the reception was.

Industry peers and critics are two entirely different bodies. It was mostly well-received by industry peers awards (but still was snubbed at the Oscar’s obv). As I said, it definitely had some critical praise but it landed in the realm of generally positive or “best part of a bad film” with numerous detractors. Liddos have created a vacuum on atrl in which the narrative says the performance was universally-praised, which is just a blatant lie. The problem was that when I and others posted excerpts from the mainstream publications that had issues with her overacting, accent, etc. it then became about personal attacks. Rinse and repeat. Again, if the thread is still up then you can easily go read the reviews posted there. I’m not going to go through reviews two years later to compile them again.
