HardBambi Posted January 18 Posted January 18 Why is Janet Jackson doing so poorly on streaming? Is it lack of playlisting, not enough effort done by her record company or has her music aged badly? She has only 5.4 monthly listeners and no song over 200 million streams which is simply unacceptable because she was incredibly big in the 80’s 90s and she even has 2 Hot100 number 1s in the 2000s (Doesn’t really matter and All for You) I found this top 10 of pre-90s female artists on Spotify if anyone has a top 20 or know where Janet is on the list pls help. Top 10 Pre-1990s Female Artists on Spotify: 1. Madonna (7B streams) 2. Whitney Houston (5.9B) 3. Celine Dion (4.7B) 4. Ella Fitzgerald (3B) 5. Dolly Parton (2.9B) 6. Enya (2.9B) 7. Aretha Franklin (2.9B) 8. Kylie Minogue (2.5B) 9. Tina Turner (2.3B) 10. Cyndi Lauper (2.3B) Why do you think this is and do you think thinks will get better or worse for her in the streaming era? PS: No offence to Kylie fans but for me to see Kylie above Janet it’s shocking and I’ll tell you why, 10 Billboard number 1s, not everyone has that! 3 5 3
Erreur2 La Nature Posted January 18 Posted January 18 This only shows that streaming doesn't mean much when it comes to artists who debuted decades ago. I ain't gonna lie her streams are bad even compared to her peers but streaming platforms are mainly used by teenagers and "young adults" and she is not relevant to that demographic. 4 1 2 1

Bacardo Royale Posted January 18 Posted January 18 Not Ella Fitzgerald being that high up ,what a legend 7 4
Bacardo Royale Posted January 18 Posted January 18 As for Janet I dont know but That's The Way Love Goes deserves at least a billion streams 2
Mordecai Posted January 18 Posted January 18 Because the reality is that she's forgotten. That doesn't take away from any of her success or her achievements but the super bowl erased any legacy she had 18 8
Badgalbriel Posted January 18 Posted January 18 Janet is mostly unknown. Like, 99% unknown outside of the US/UK/old gays. It's not surprising. 8 6 1 17
LOTF Posted January 18 Posted January 18 For one, she was unfairly ostracized after the Superbowl incident. Secondly, she seemed to never care getting it back on It honestly angers me how underrated and underappreciated she is these days. She and Madonna SHOULD be top 2 female artists of all time. PERIOD 8 5 1

Solaria Posted January 18 Posted January 18 I love her to death but it’s kind of her own fault, she USED to be global and anyone who denies that doesn’t have their facts straight but her global appeal has diminished over the years largely due to her own doing. The Together Again Tour should have visited all continents not just North America. It was the perfect opportunity to promote her back catalogue, mess around with TikTok a bit and atleast raise her streaming numbers a little bit. But she doesn’t care Her large unpresence in the 2010s also doesn’t help. 4 2
MattieB Posted January 18 Posted January 18 Probably the blacklist back then, people dont really realize how much stopping a full career that had such a momentum back then and the damage it could cause in the long run, Michael Jackson is the only exception

A lie from the deepest depths of hell lmao, Janet is actually more well known outside of the states, people never factor in places like Africa and the middle east 5 1 1
#Beautiful Posted January 18 Posted January 18 the 2004 incident and blacklisting ruined her career from a commercial standpoint in a lot of ways but you already knew that 4

The US is the only place where Janet’s relevancy never really went away. She hasn’t made any effort to promote herself in the rest of the world especially last decade. And the thread is about streams and I’m not sure Africa and the Middle East contribute a lot to global streaming numbers 1 1
Mr. Blue_Shirt Posted January 18 Posted January 18 Lack of new music definitely has to do with it. She's still alive, and she only released one album and one new single in the last decade But at least she's doing really well on her new tour. Which means that she's not that forgotten, like most people on this site always said she was
The7thStranger Posted January 18 Posted January 18 There's no way to fully understand how much better (or worse) Janet's streams would be had the blacklasting in the US after Superbowl never happened. A meteor hit her career, so these threads always feel particularly mean. 11 2
StonedSoulPicnic Posted January 18 Posted January 18 She stopped documenting her career. Fans were doing more than her for a while (#JanetsLegacyMatters). 1

We can't discount those. 1
KatyPrismSpirit Posted January 18 Posted January 18 gp no taste its kinda weird because to me her music sounds timeless but i think a lot of people consider the production “dated” 1
FailSafe Posted January 18 Posted January 18 I don't know much about her discography but together again deserves 1 billion streams 4
