Even as someone who is absolutely certain that Taylor will overtake her commercially in a few years, I have to admit - yes, Madonna thus far is still THE biggest woman pop star in world history. Even after Taylor takes the lead commercially, it will be a while before her influence and impact starts to catch up to Madonna’s, as Madonna is the blueprint of the modern pop star and the direct predecessor of most of the artists we all love.

This changes a little if you consider only the US, where I think the argument could be made that Taylor is the biggest and Mariah is second, at least on a commercial basis (the 2019 all-time Billboard chart said #4 Mariah, #5 Madonna, #8 Taylor). Still the addition of those soft measures like legacy and impact suggest Madonna competes with them.

While she’s clearly not at her commercial peak anymore, she’s had such a long, successful career that surpassing her in any way is no trivial or easy feat for any artist anywhere.

This thread already reeks of sexism and misogyny by setting women against each other. Like others said, no one does this with male artists.

Madonna is factually at the top of the pop pantheon as the female blueprint, setting the model of pop stardom for female pop artists. Numbers are there, the influence is there, the longevity is there.

People with knowledge of pop culture and the history of popular music are able to effectively recognise Madonna at the top, with the history of pop music being split between before Madonna and after Madonna.

All others have their markets and peaks of success, which should be recognised of course.

Even Billboard did an article saying the charts can be divided into before and after Madonna.

She won't.

In terms of consumption units, the modern way to measure commercial success, she will. Denying the inevitable doesn’t really do anything, and when that comes to pass, it won’t mean Madonna’s immense contributions to pop music and pop culture suddenly cease to be important, so I don’t get the point of pretending it’s not going to happen.

I would to see Mariah selling the O2 arena in London 5 nights in a row … Maybe if all 5 concerts are on Christmas day

The thing is that Madonna is a legend and Mariah is a Christmas legend

She will never. The seasonal singer who flopped all her recent albums but is busy recycling her 30 years old seasonal song to inflate her chart stats. But she could just sit on an American Santa sleigh like she's been.

Nothing to do other than recycling the boring and overplayed jurassic years old  seasonal song. That won't be interesting for them at all.  Never.

I'm not a big fan of Madonna's career, but come on. The lady has been selling stadium shows around the world since the 90s

Mariah has ZERO tour force and can't even sell an arena tour these days and it took Taylor 17 years to do it outside of the Anglosphere.

Mariah's career is all smoke and mirrors. Nobody knows any of her local #1s outside the Anglosphere.

maybe the Christmas song but that's it.

When was the last time Madonna charted solo on hot 100? Ice age?

OT: Mariah is at a point in her career where everything - success, talent, acclaim, etc. are well-balanced. So, nothing matters.

The same for the other two.

Your favorite 30 year old song doesn't change the fact that all her last albums flopped harder than Madonna. When was the last time that your favorite charted solo then? She's even younger and debuted later than her. But still except for that seasonal song for the holidays which is not by happening her talent but just a calendar, she's not doing anything. Outside the us, her recent works did worse.

As if madonna is not well acclaimed?

Her recent tour is well acclaimed again but your favorite can't tour outside the holidays and the us Christmas box.

As a matter of fact, Madonna is more acclaimed than your favorite according to the acclaimed musician list.

Bigger than both.

Sales and influences.

Taylor is in her 30s and come back when she gets to 60 to see.

What about taylors forgettable and quick produced disposable songs?

No one knows and remembers her forggetable songs except for her swifties.

Even Most people around the world still don't know her name.
