rl231 Posted November 9, 2023 Author Posted November 9, 2023 Tamariz blackoutbaby Sia - Playground gardendreams Chris Rice - Kids Again Golden Hour Hoodie Allen - Act My Age HungryByTheBuffet Hardwell - Young Again MusicLoverDude Avril Lavigne - Here's To Never Growing Up Seffers The Ready Set - Young Forever Titsanny Bazzi - Young & Alive ZORBIT Chris Vos - Don't Grow Up Sia - Playground Gateau - 9 - My only concern here is that there’s not really that edge of “Society tells me this is wrong, but I’m going to do it anyway” otherwise its very very strong. Luckystrike - 9 - My only issue is that I wish she specified a bit more why she doesn’t want to grow up but other than that I think it’s a great fit. Rotunda - 8 - There’s a level of seriousness here and a reference to motherhood that at least gives the impression that we’re dealing with an adult rather than a child, but it could be more explicit. There’s also declarations of not wanting to grow old, but not really a declaration that age is a construct. Supaspaz - 9 - The narrator here could just as easily be an actual child as an adult who doesn’t want to grow up. It’s just missing a little something to make us understand that she’s rejecting her age. Chris Rice - Kids Again Gateau - 3.5 - I have no clue what the other judges are seeing because this is literally not what the prompt is asking for. I gave points for being vaguely related and provigind various examples of childhood, but this is about yearning to act as a child, not the action of actually doing it irregardless of what society tells you.. Luckystrike - 8 - It lacks that specific “the narrator references how time is nothing but a construct and how they don't need to act their age” prompt but it has plenty of childlike references and that feeling of maintaining a youthful energy so, almost there. Rotunda - 7 - This is more a longing for the past than a refusal to grow up or an articulation that age is just a number. Supaspaz - 8 - This song seems to be less about not wanting to act one’s age than embracing the joy of childhood again as an adult. It’s a subtle distinction that prevents this from being a top entry. Hoodie Allen - Act My Age Gateau - 8.5 - Works well. Luckystrike - 9 - Kind of the same issue as the Bliss n Eso song but this one is less extreme so you get .5 more. Rotunda - 7 - This is more twenty-somethings debauchery than teenage debauchery Supaspaz - 7 - Another entry where the narrator is reverting to the wrong period of his life to exactly fit this theme. Hardwell - Young Again Gateau - 3 - This isn’t really about being young despite your physical state, its about yearning to be young. Luckystrike - 1 - I’m sorry but some of you really need some reading comprehension lessons, no shade. Rotunda - 2 - https://youtu.be/JJioIxpoSbk?si=-Wmw3u6GuXbNSXpR Supaspaz - 3 - I will also throw you some pity points, because you at least understood that the narrator should have a desire to return to their childhood. It’s just that this one laments not being able to, which is exactly the opposite of the prompt. Avril Lavigne - Here's To Never Growing Up Gateau - 7.5 - This definitely works but it doesn’t have the qualities asked in the prompt of the truly Great entries. I’d go more in depth with this but tbh read the crits I’ve wrote in similarly scored entries and you’ll see why. Whew writing these can get very repetitive. Luckystrike - 6.5 - I feel like it’s a very surface level entry, like it works because it kinda touches every aspect of the theme but quite vaguely, and it does lack that mention of her physical age versus her desire to stay young. Rotunda - 6 - It’s just too general. She wants to remain youthful, but there’s no opposition to society here. There’s reference to things she did in her adolescence/adulthood Supaspaz - 6 - Avril is reveling in her youth, but it doesn’t have any of the existential subtext that this round is really about. The Ready Set - Young Forever Gateau - 2 - This is like…. Not at all related? What on earth? Not trying to be shady but did you send this and know that this was as off-base as it is? Luckystrike - 3 - Well no, maybe the chorus has hints of the theme but the rest gave me nothing. Rotunda - 2 - https://youtu.be/OaNBlWuTj7I?si=ANfDeGtKOrczn6Ko Supaspaz - 1 - Many of these entries seem to have been chosen by the title alone, without considering the lyrics any more deeply. This one is truly off the theme, though – and, frankly, unlistenable. Bazzi - Young & Alive Gateau - 2.5 - Honestly I’m confused as to why this song was even written. Not even talking about why it was submitted here, that’s a whole ‘nother matter, but why was this song created? It doesn’t convey the idea that this is a special kind of love that makes you feel like its one of those first young loves again, nor does it really send any message in particular. There are callbacks to various mid-aughts “remember when” things (very generic mind you, nothing at all written with him in mind_, along with a sprinkle of romance here and there. Its just such a random song. Luckystrike - 1 - It is a love song written with 2005 references. Rotunda - 2 - https://youtu.be/9HPWEc_929Y?si=_KpsnHNnSZhpMhnT Supaspaz - 3 - There’s a vague connection here in the way this relationship brings the narrator back to his youth – I can appreciate that you found a song with some childlike imagery – but it’s simply not what the round is about. Chris Vos - Won't Grow Up Gateau - 8 - This is missing pretty much any semblance of references to childhood. Luckystrike - 9.5 - 5 monthly listeners is absolutely crazy so kudos for the research lmfao, only docked .5 because it’s missing more childish references but it’s pretty spot on. Rotunda - 8.5 - Way too general to warrant anything higher. Supaspaz - 9.5 - Only 83 views on the official lyric video, so I could believe you had written this song yourself for this challenge if it hadn’t been uploaded to YouTube two years ago. With some specific imagery from childhood, it could have been a 10. Now...how did Houdini do?
rl231 Posted November 9, 2023 Author Posted November 9, 2023 HOUDINI Alldeezy Simple Plan - Grow Up Armani Blink 182 - What's My Age Again? Aurora Kesha - Potato Song (Cuz I Want To) Devon Robot Hoku - Perfect Day EnterTheAttic Rainie Zenith - Pushing Thirty fiercE Sarah Allison Turner - Young When I'm Old Kyuti George Jones - I Don't Need Your Rockin Chair Lemon Bliss n Eso - Act Your Age Simple Plan - Grow Up Gateau - 8 - This absolutely works, however its kind of missing the essence of time being a construct. Luckystrike - 8 - I feel like it works to an extent but it lacked some of that childish imagery that we asked for, but it does showcase some teen angst so I’ll take it Rotunda - 7 - We have no idea how old the singer is supposed to be in this scenario, so we can’t even tell if he’s delayed in his maturity or just holding on to his last strands of youth. Supaspaz - 7 - Not so much childlike as brattily adolescent, but he definitely doesn’t want to grow up! Blink 182 - What's My Age Again? Gateau - 8 - This is a perfectly fine entry, although it errs a lot into the relationship aspect, it uses it as a vehicle to convey his actions of acting like a kid and reiterating he has no interest in growing out of it. Luckystrike - 4 - I see why you would send this but it honestly missed the plot completely, it’s about a girl dumping him because he’s immature, and although it has a few moments where he declares he doesn’t want to grow up, there really is nothing more to it. Rotunda - 6.5 - I’m not mad at this. He’s clearly an adult hanging onto immature actions, and has no desire to act his age. The song would benefit from more indication that time is a construct and not being solely focused on dating. Supaspaz - 5 - A classic! Though not a great entry. He never wants to act his age, but the song completely lacks the sense of returning to innocence that this theme seems to call for. Kesha - Potato Song (Cuz I Want To) Gateau - 3 - Not really. This song is about desiring to eschew adulthood and living in a generally happy manner because she’s stressed, but not really the ‘I’m a child inside’ tone we were looking for, especially when there are much stronger entries that truly harp on this. Luckystrike - 3 - There are a few lines that allude to the theme in the second verse where she mentions she’s over adulthood and wants to eat candy but the rest of the song is just an existential crisis that has nothing to do with not wanting to act your age. Rotunda - 6 - She’s an adult who doesn’t want to act her age, yes. She mentions some childish things she’d rather do, but this is more tongue-in-cheek than literal. It’s more of a venting about the shackles of adulthood than someone relishing in their internal youth. Supaspaz - 8 - I see what you were going for here. The notion of not growing up is only stated explicitly once in the second verse, but it’s alluded to throughout the song, when she talks about being over adulthood or building sandcastles or riding her pony until it’s time for candy. All of the childlike imagery really elevates this as an entry. Hoku - Perfect Day Gateau - 2 - God I love this song but it like barely has anything to do with the prompt. Luckystrike - 3 - Again, a line or two that have a hint of the theme and nothing else, this is way too vague. Rotunda - 3.5 - This seems more like a party girl trying to maintain that lifestyle rather than someone who is trying to engage in childlike/juvenile actions and eschew any form of adult maturity. There’s also no mentioning of time as a construct. Supaspaz - 2 - I’m giving you a pity point for the mention of acting her age in the first verse. Rainie Zenith - Pushing Thirty Gateau - 8.5 - This definitely carries the tone that was asked for to an incredibly accurate extent, but I’m not seeing the examples of childlike qualities. Luckystrike - 10 - I am absolutely crying, how did you even find this? Rotunda - 9 - Missing childlike references. Supaspaz - 10 - 639 views on YouTube. Is this a relative of yours? Sarah Allison Turner - Young When I'm Old Gateau - 6.5 - I’m not sure about this one, because it doesn’t exactly ring childlike or juvenile so much as generally a feeling of youth, nor does it capture of feeling of embracing these qualities as of *now* its very much a future-looking song. Luckystrike - 7.5 - I’m kind of conflicted with this one because in a way she is embracing the old age unapologetically which is kind of the opposite of the theme, but in doing so she mentions how she wants to approach that age with a very young minded perspective and pretty much hits every other point of the theme. Rotunda - 6.5 - She wants to maintain a youthful spirit in her old age, but she isn’t naming things associated with childhood/adolescence, but instead young adulthood. Supaspaz - 7 - A decent fit. The biggest flaw is that her notion of staying “young” is all over the place in the song. Smoking a cigarette is not exactly a childlike act. George Jones - I Don't Need Your Rockin Chair Gateau - 7 - Definitely missing a lot of elements of specificities here, along with the tone the prompt is inciting. Its Just Okay. Luckystrike - 8.5 - It’s too brief but I think it works decently. Rotunda - 6.5 - Again, this isn’t about childhood or adolescence, he’s just saying he’s still hip and healthy as an old man Supaspaz - 8 - Hits most of the theme right on target. He has no interest in returning to childhood, though. Bliss n Eso - Act Your Age Gateau - 7 - Ultimately my problem with this is that its way too aged. Blunts? Borat Mankinis? Beers? A baby wouldn’t do that. The prompt definitely states “childlike” “juvenile” while this seems like someone who is immature, yes, but definitely neither of those things. Luckystrike - 8.5 - A little too extreme with some of the things he mentions that make him want to not mature, but I guess it works. Rotunda - 8 - Need more about how time is construct. Supaspaz - 7.5 - This is just as much about hardcore partying as it is a return to childhood, so I’ll have to split the difference on the score. Final results next!

Seffers Posted November 9, 2023 Posted November 9, 2023 Welcome to Round 5 – The Judges’ Review Recap While your favorite STEM math wiz is unavailable, I am here to see how the judges reviews compare to each other. Let’s get cracking – this round we had @Gateau @luckystrike @Rotunda and @supaspaz Who was the most generous judge? @supaspaz claims the top spot again, with a 6.31. Who was the most critical judge? For a third time in a row, we have @Gateau with 5.87 Second place was Lucky with 6.22 Third was Rotunda with 5.97. Which song had the judges most divided? @Aurora – your potato song seemed to be quite .. the hot potato between judges – with a FIVE point difference! @gardendreams – ironically enough, the round you can’t do these, you come in 2nd! Seems the judges weren’t vibing with your kids song, as you came in second with a 4.5 difference. @Armani? was in 3rd with a 4 point difference. A very tight race this week, as Taramiz only needed 8 more points to win this week! Not too many fun facts this round, but: Every judge except for Rotunda gave a 1 this round. #yikes! Despite the tribe mixup, Houdini continues their unbeaten streak! Judges Cumulative Ranking (more points = more critical) 1. Luckystrike - 1 1. Staryu - 1 3. Supaspa - 2 3. Auburn - 2 5. Boys - 3 7. Rotunda - 6 7. Wish – 6 8. Gateau - 9 that's all woosh 2 1

I was surprised to see the mixed reception for this one... and then I wasn't. Further proof of a deep generational chasm that divides ATRL into two camps; the twentysomething pop sophisticates with 15 to 20 years of top-shelf pop consumption to their name, and an unruly kid crew with Troye Sivan avatars and tributes to Zara Larsson in their signatures. It's not that the latter generation is a lost cause entirely, but they've clearly never heard a "Potato Song" — that is, they've never encountered a song quite as distinctive as Kesha's. "But I know Kesha! Warrior was the first album I bought!" First off, ask for a refund. And no, you don't know Kesha, you know a very stilted and subdued version of the iconic performer. The Kesha of "Potato Song" is Kesha as Kesha is intended to sound. She very skillfully vacillates between a range of tones; she shouty, then sarcastic, then childish, then shouty again, then empowering. (And yes, that's how she's supposed to do it.) She's defiant. She's mischievous. She's sounds slightly absurd. She's fully engaged. She's expressive in ways that "technically superior" vocalists just aren't. She is brilliant. You have no idea how brilliant she is. This is the probably purest attempt Kesha has made to harness some of that ineffable charm that made her early work so irresistible. I adore it. 1 2
