We have decided not to separate everyone into groups this time. Given that all three elims were from Group A in R1, it seemed unfair to have the weakest B players receive off votes en masse from contestants, even more than the ones from A that were actually eliminated. So you'll be reading every entry this round. Good news is I won't be requiring an explanation (but do one if you want because I enjoyed reading them last round)!

If you do not complete this by the deadline, 30% of your score will be deducted.

The bottom three players CUMULATIVELY will be eliminated.

~48 hour deadline!

Staryu's "critiques"

Every Question About Carrie Bradshaw in 'Sex and the City' Answered – WWD

Spoiler

Alena: Rare - She
Oh wow I love all the big smart words you used, I felt dumb reading it but the words were still lovely. I think She makes sense as a grower choice, it definitely doesn't grab the listener on first listen (or 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc.) Could have used a little more specifics on why YOU didn't click with the song at first tho!

ATRL Username: Beatopia - Beatopia Cultsong
I think you pretty much covered everything we were looking for here and I agree with your choice very much, so great job!

Auburn: The Velvet Rope - Free Xone
Not 4-5 years old :deadbanana2: Escapade was my first Janet obsession when I was like 8 probably. Anyway who cares about me, I love your story about the song and how you connect with it, it's understandable this would not be something a 4 year old would gravitate to :weee:

Dessy: Jaguar II - How Does It Make You Feel
Maybe could have used a little more reasoning why this song personally grew on you, the last bit about the song being good for a restaurant doesn't really feel needed but I can see the vision I guess.

Erikills: Trouble - Controversy
I'm glad you could gaslight yourself into enjoying this "song" :heart2: I'll pretend this ended at HATED it!! :eli: But for real, I think you explained yourself well, maybe a little more expansion on the reasons why you hated it but that's just a minor critique, I think you did well, good job.

Luckystrike: Bloom - Postcard
Another cute personal story connection, I think you explained your initial dislike for the song well and how the song grew on you too, good job.

minho: HYPNOS - Mercury
I really loved your description of the song and album as a whole and agree with what you said, but I wish you expanded more on why you personally did not care for the song at first, is it just because it faded between superior tracks or did you not like the anger of the song at first?

MusicLoverDude: Midnights - Dear Reader
Your reasonings for this song growing on you are explained well, I just wish you expanded a bit more on what you disliked about the song at first to really fully establish how it grew on you.

nostalgic: Dignity - Dreamer
Omg I agree this song has always felt a little childish to me, so I relate to your reasonings, it also grew on me a little, still not my fave, but it's cute. I think you explained everything well, great job :clap3:

Not Like the Movies: CTRL - Doves in the Wind
I've always loved the title of this song more than the song itself, but your assessment of the song makes 100% sense to me, I think you nailed the assignment again :clap3: not really anything to critique here.

Overprotected: Everything's Eventual - 5am
You nailed the part about why you like the song now but you did not set up why it had to grow on you much at all, we need more details on why you didn't like it at first!

PinkBox: Rebel Heart - ***** I'm Madonna
Not the best song of her career having to GROW on you, shame on you fake fan!! I'm glad you saw the light and learned to appreciate this masterpiece :clap3: I do agree though Rebel Heart kind of feels like an odd album for this particular song. Also I'm jk it's not her best song but I do love it and yeah you did a good job this round, slay queen.

PoisonedIvy: Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Pets - Milky Milky Milk
It's kinda fun reading about this album from someone who actually loves it's point of view, everything you've wrote so far about this album I feel like is genuine to you and I like that.

Post Malone: Unaplogetic - Nobody's Business
BIDNEH has always been catchy to me, a guilty pleasure, like the Birthday Cake remix, I agree wtih your assessment though, sometimes the art just needs to be viewed as it's own thing! I think you covered both sides of the prompt this round quite well, good job!

Psycho: Emotion - Warm Blood
1000% agree :clap3: and nothing to critique here, I think your explanation is perfect tbh.

stupidjock: Mercurial World - Follow the Leader
Nice story, I enjoy stories that don't involves sobs, I appreciate this type more, it makes judging more bearable. I think you explained yourself well, nothing much for me to add tbh.

ughgabriel: Halcyon Nights - In My City
I feel like your explanation here is a little too dreamy itself and could have used a little more clarity by expanding on what exactly you didn't like about the song at first, but the last line was cute about meeting with little Gabe.

ultraviolence.xx: RAVEN - Let It Go
I feel like techinically you have this album covered, you obviously know your stuff. I think maybe going a little deeper on any personal reasonings of why you disliked the song/enjoy it now would be nice, even if not required, but like I said you seem to really know the technical/musical side of things quite well, I love the use of "slinky staccato", it kinda sounds dirty.

wehavetostan: The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess - Kaleidoscope
Your reasonings for why the song grew on you are great but I feel like we could have used a bit more details on why you did not care for this song at first besides it being not upbeat.

@ughgabriel @Psycho @ATRL Username @luckystrike @Alena @MusicLoverDude @Dessy @minho @Not Like The Movies @PoisonedIvy @stupidjock @EriKills @Post Malone @ultraviolence.xx @Auburn @wehavetostan @PinkBox @nostalgic @Overprotected

SHELVEN'S CRITIQUES

Spoiler

Alena – Rare – She

Yeah um… I don’t know exactly what’s happening here, but your entry is serving either computer-generated or some sort of joke where you purposely shoehorned in a bunch of vocabulary words to make it sound robotic. And even if I were to look past that, it also barely meets the theme at all. You include one vague sentence about the song initially wasn’t for you because it was “different” and then the entire rest of the entry is just an awkwardly worded review of the song. I’m guessing you weren’t taking this round seriously, so I assume you won’t mind my score.

ATRL Username – Beatopia – Beatopia Cultsong

Your explanation does some things quite strongly, but also slightly misses the overall mark of the theme in my opinion. Your discussion of how the song gets recontextualized once the listener has gone through the full album is convincing and interesting, but I wish you had touched more on why you personally didn’t click with the song at first, as opposed to it generally feeling less “immediate” or “off-putting” as a whole. I’m also not entirely sold on the suggestion that a song counts as “growing on you” when you start to like it after just one listen to the album.

Auburn – The Velvet Rope – Free Xone

Okay NOW we’re getting somewhere! You do a great job balancing the two halves of the prompt, providing specific, convincing reasons why you couldn’t connect with the song at first and then delving into what prompted the song to grow on you and what you appreciate about it now. You also manage to seamlessly move between the song’s sound, structure and lyrics in discussing how your journey with this song evolved over time. This is the exact type of entry I had in mind when this theme was announced, so great job.

Dessy – Jaguar II – How Does It Make You Feel

You do a great job describing what you like about the song now and what clicked for you, but I’m left wanting more on the half of your explanation that discusses why you didn’t like it at first. You describe the song as slower than the rest of the album and more of an affectionate love song compared to the tracks near it on the track list, but why did those factors lead you to not appreciate the song at first? I also have the same critique here as I did for ATRL Username’s entry, which is that I’m not sold on this theme being met by a song that you suggest you already started liking after going through just one full listen of the album.

EriKills – Trouble – Controversy

What I really like about this entry is that you didn’t beat around the bush in clearly explaining why you didn’t like the song at first. That’s what we want here! I also think you took a smart approach admitting that the things you didn’t like about the song at first didn’t necessarily go away; it’s more that you found things to enjoy about the song in spite of those parts you don’t like. Adding in a sentence about what got you to give the song another chance and stop skipping it is a great added touch too. Very solid entry from start to finish!

_________________________________

luckystrike – Bloom – Postcard

Like EriKills’ entry, I like that you’re direct and clear in your personal criticisms of the song based on how you first viewed it. Your explanation of the moment where the song clicked for you is also grounded and convincing. I think you could have improved this entry by going into a bit more detail or providing specific examples about why the lyrics now speak to you instead of just stating that they do, but overall, this is a big improvement over your Round 1 entry.

_________________________________

minho – HYPNOS – Mercury

This is a very well-written entry, but unfortunately I’m struggling to see how it directly meets the theme. The first half of your explanation seems like more of an explanation of why the song might generally be underrated as opposed to why you personally didn’t click with it at first. The second half has a similar problem where you just generally describe why the song is good instead of why it grew on you. You end the explanation saying the song’s balance is what made the song grow on you, but I’m not left understanding why it needed to grow on you in the first place.

_________________________________

MusicLoverDude – Midnights – Dear Reader

Your explanation has the bones of an entry that would meet the theme, but the substance is lacking. Your opening sentence about why the song didn’t click for you at first is very vague – why was it not in the top half of the album for you? What about it made other tracks overshadow it? Similarly, your explanation of the positives about the song mostly feels like an objective review of the song instead of a discussion of why the song grew on you. Your second last sentence is directly on theme, but I wish points like that were present throughout your entire entry.

nostalgic – Dignity – Dreamer

Like I’ve said about a few entries so far, I appreciate the directness and honesty about what prevented you from clicking with the song at first. That said, I think your explanation loses some steam in the second half. You talk about discovering the message of the song, but why did discovering that message result in the song growing on you? What about that message did you find “secretly brilliant”? I’m left somewhat understanding that you appreciated the song more now than you did before, but I think you could have done a better job clarifying why.

Not Like The Movies – CTRL – Doves In The Wind

There’s two intertwined but not quite identical ideas in here: the song grew on you as you learned to become more comfortable with sexuality, and it grew on you as you began your journey as a feminist. Both explanations feel personal, convincing and meet both halves of the theme, but I think picking one of those two lanes to focus on would have elevated this entry further, instead of trying to squeeze both of them into one explanation.

_________________________________

Overprotected – Everything’s Eventual – 5am

This is another entry that I think missed the mark and interpreted the theme as “tell us what you like about a song you didn’t like before”, as opposed to the actual theme of “tell us why a song that didn’t click with you at first grew on you.” You don’t really critique the song at all here – even when you say you used to skip it, you acknowledge it was a beautiful song. And while you start off generally explaining that learning about the artist’s experience made the song grow on you, you then spend a vast majority of the entry essentially summarizing the song.

_________________________________

PinkBox – Rebel Heart – ***** I’m Madonna

Okay, we’re back to people properly critiquing their songs! I think the two halves of your entry work really well together – the contrast between you viewing the song as too silly for an otherwise serious album and now learning to appreciate that diversity is clear and well-explained. This would have been a bit stronger with a more robust explanation of what led you to finally experience that transition (instead of just vaguely saying it eventually happened), but overall I think this entry meets the theme well.

_________________________________

PoisonedIvy – Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz – Milky Milky Milk

The implied theme of your explanation being that a person needs to be on hard drugs to not hate this song is sending me dfjkhgf. But… I think it works overall?? It’s a very specific and practical reason why the song grew on you, but I think you do a good job selling why that experience was a turning point for you when it comes to this song. Honestly I think you would have been better off leaving out the second last sentence entirely since it leaves an unanswered question (how did you learn to finally accept the melody and production?), but overall I enjoyed this unique entry and I think it hits the theme.

_________________________________

Post Malone – Unapologetic – Nobody’s Business

This is a creative take to the theme, but sadly I don’t think it works for me. I think my issue is that this isn’t really an explanation of why the song grew on you because you don’t claim to have disliked the song itself at the beginning. It reads more like you always thought the song itself was good, but you just refused to enjoy it out of principle until you eventually learned to let go of that. Again, it’s an interesting choice, but it misses the mark for me.

_________________________________

Psycho – Emotion – Warm Blood

The first half of your entry works incredibly well – you provide a clear personal reason for why the song didn’t click with you at first, and then explain how you recontextualized the song in your mind to learn to appreciate it. I think the second half of your entry is weaker since your growth is explained much more vaguely – what about the “evolution” in your music taste led you to no longer view Carly’s vocals as unpolished and meandering? Similar to what I said to Movies, I think you would have been better off fleshing out your first idea even more, instead of trying to fit two explanations in here and only strongly selling one.

_________________________________

stupidjock – Mercurial World – Follow The Leader

This is a simple explanation, but one that I think works well for this theme. You hit each of the aspects of the theme succinctly and clearly, explaining why you had a hard time clicking with the song at first, what made the song start growing on you, and why that growth happened. The entry could have used a touch more depth at points, but overall I think it checks off all of the boxes in this round.

_________________________________

ughgabriel – Halcyon Nights – In My City

You made what I think is a strange choice in this round by phrasing your explanation from the position of a neutral observer instead of in the first person. You mention that the song can be perceived differently by an adult compared to a teenager, but was that true to you? Did you personally not click with the song as a teenager and then learn to like it more as an adult? There are ideas in here that could have worked for the theme, but your approach seemed to actively go out of the way to avoid directly tackling the theme, so I’m a bit puzzled by this entry honestly.

_________________________________

ultraviolence.xx – RAVEN – Let It Go

Like both your audition and your Round 1 entry, this entry has a review-like quality to it. While I think you tied that quality to the theme well in those rounds, I don’t think you were as effective this time around. You describe the song as being understated in the first half of your explanation, but why did that understated nature prevent the song from clicking with you at first? I think you do a better job in the second half in being a bit more explicit about how the song has subtle aspects that naturally take time to appreciate, but overall I wish you had incorporated more of your personal journey with this song into your explanation.

_________________________________

wehavetostan – The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess – Kaleidoscope

Your explanation of why you didn’t appreciate the song at first is simple but effective – I can relate to the feeling of being disappointed by an otherwise good song because it wasn’t what you were initially hoping to hear! Like several other entries this round, I think the second half of your entry falls victim to feeling more like a summary of what’s good about the song instead of a discussion of why it grew on you – I think a strong concluding sentence comparing your current feelings to those initial feelings would have helped here.
