Critically acclaimed movies you dislike

I have a lot of respect for what Spencer was trying to do, but it wasn't even half as thematically inspired or rich as it thinks it is. And KStew is super uneven. Beautiful in some sections, stiff as a brick in others.

Call me by your name is the worst movie of all time

Overrated? Yes. Worst movie of all time? I’m not sure about that one. But yes I truly don’t understand the hype for this one.

I didn't hate it but I'm puzzled how acclaimed Barbarian was :rip:

The lack of dialogue between the characters, their cattiness, and no internal monologue (which was apparently a prominent feature in the book) led to a very disorienting experience for me. I remember the scene where Elio and Oliver first do it and the next scene is Oliver asking if Elio is mad at him and Elio rolls his eyes and says no and then walks away. There is implied conflict there and mixed emotions from both sides. It's never expanded upon. Things like this kept happening to the point where I had no idea what was happening. Implicit storytelling is fine, but there's a fine line between being implicit and effectively communicating nothing to the audience.

In terms of atmosphere though, it's a fantastic movie. I'll give it that.

This was definitely a purposeful creative choice for the adaptation. And while I typically agree with the implicit storytelling part, I think the non-communication is actually the genius of it. You don't really know what's going on because the characters don't know themselves. They're falling in love in a vacuum where the relationship is doomed from the start, hence the emotional pendulum that goes on throughout the film.

I can totally understand how it's not everyone's cup of tea though as that's all it really is. I found that watching it while I was just laying around relaxed is where it really clicked for me.

I just saw Joy Ride and it was mid as hell 6/10

Citizen Kane is perhaps the most boring movie Iʻve ever seen in my LIFE

Basically, everything nominated for an Oscar in the past ten year. If it has an Oscar nomination, I just don't watch it.

I feel like I didn't miss anything good.

It took everything in me not to walk out of Everything Everywhere All At Once :rip:

The humor was too obnoxious and stupid for me

Interstellar. Too long and boring and I will die on that hill

Uncut Gems is just two hours of loud yelling and I have never been so annoyed watching a movie.

An objectively incorrect take. :msmarvel:

Jk gorge you have a right to your experience, but I actually really loved that movie!! I found her performance and the overall presentation (cinematography, directing, editing choices, etc.) to be breathtaking.

I thought her performance was overwrought and the movie was MIZZZz. Emphasis on Zzz

Which I guess is kind of the point of capturing that time but I refuse to believe Diana wasn’t a whole human with small joys and yes a lot of suffering

That makes sense. I’ve heard similar comments from people who have also read the book. Maybe narration could have helped to some extent? Or more moments of him writing his thoughts in a diary? Idk, just something to help the audience get where the characters are at internally would have gone a long way.

Yeah, narration probably would've been the best route to go. I think a lot of filmmakers are afraid of narration because it can be seen as cheesy, but I think it could be a really useful tool in a lot of films. In CMBYN's case, I think the narration could've actually been a really beautiful addition. Hearing the thoughts and feelings of Elio could've added a really strong layer of connection to everything.

Honestly I'm pretty impressed the movie came out even as competently as it did. The novel is a lot like The Catcher in the Rye in the way that it's so deeply a character study and so short on actual narrative that adapting it for film is incredibly difficult. It's all about character development and expression of theme rather than story beats and plot points and that's much easier done in writing than visually.

You absolutely have missed some of the best films of the last decade if you avoid it simply due to an Oscar nomination

Hum, no! I can have whole conversations and never once these movies are brought up by other people. Oscar is not relevant.

If i want to see good indie movies I prefer going for European arthouse. They are always better than any Hollywood oscar movies.
