Miss Show Business Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. I just didn't get it. IMO it was kind of bizarre. But to each their own. Also, The Shape Of Water for obvious reasons... 4

mystery Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 I know everyone loves it but I couldn't get into Everything Everywhere All At Once at all, I do understand how people like it but the maximalism was not for me. 2

Beautiful cinematography, stylish direction, incredible performances, and goosebump inducing score disguised a fairly workman like screenplay. All of the pieces fell together for that element to be looked over mostly. Genuinely had the cast not been as good as they were, that would've been more noticeable. They just had a cast that can act well regardless of screenplay and a director who had a very specific visual language for the story to unfold with. 1

Domination Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 Basically the indie hit of any given year is always terrible (CMBYN, EEAAO, etc.)

They just had a cast that can act well regardless of screenplay and a director who had a very specific visual language for the story to unfold with. The cinematography was beautiful (the countryside of Italy never looked so picturesque). But, the story was very undercooked and underdeveloped. My biggest issue is I had no idea how the characters felt about each other until the end of the movie. The lack of dialogue between the characters, their cattiness, and no internal monologue (which was apparently a prominent feature in the book) led to a very disorienting experience for me. I remember the scene where Elio and Oliver first do it and the next scene is Oliver asking if Elio is mad at him and Elio rolls his eyes and says no and then walks away. There is implied conflict there and mixed emotions from both sides. It's never expanded upon. Things like this kept happening to the point where I had no idea what was happening. Implicit storytelling is fine, but there's a fine line between being implicit and effectively communicating nothing to the audience. In terms of atmosphere though, it's a fantastic movie. I'll give it that.

Folklore89sm Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 Agree with Us. The film is riddled with plot holes and just left no impression. The trailer is literally better than the film. I will admit that it is a clever concept but the execution is awful 1
