A couple of these match-ups are still so close. I'm going to leave this open a few more hours before I update.

Okay, I guess we've really exhausted the interest in this round! Time to move on. I can't vote to create a tie, so apologies in advance to "Respect," which probably would have gotten my support otherwise, as much as I love No Doubt.

The Houston-on-Houston showdown we've all been anticipating is happening! Both #1 "I Will Always Love You" and #15 "Don't Leave Me This Way" made it through the Sweet Sixteen, setting up a duel between Whitney and Thelma for the regional title next round. Overall top seed #1 "It's My Life" held off a very tough challenge from #4 "Respect," potentially awakening Aretha Franklin's spirit to haunt Gwen Stefani for eternity. With #13 "Tainted Love" falling to #1 "Torn", no male vocalists are left in the tournament, unless you count Wyclef Jean serving as hype man on #3 "Killing Me Softly". But the continuing success of #2 "Heaven" and #15 "Valerie" — which fairly comfortably dispatched #14 "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and #11 "Emotion," respectively — means half the remaining contenders are credited to men, either as producers or members of a group. Let's focus on girl power, though, and specifically Cyndi Lauper's ongoing historic run with #16 "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", which narrowly outlasted #4 "Proud Mary."

(1) "It's My Life" No Doubt def. (4) "Respect" Aretha Franklin [15-13]
(3) "Killing Me Softly" The Fugees def. (2) "I'll Be There" Mariah Carey [16-12]

(1) "Torn" Natalie Imbruglia def. (13) "Tainted Love" Soft Cell [18-10]
(15) "Valerie" Mark Ronson ft. Amy Winehouse def. (11) "Emotion" Destiny's Child [18-10]

(16) "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" Cyndi Lauper def. (4) "Proud Mary" Ike and Tina Turner [15-13]
(2) "Heaven" DJ Sammy and Yanou ft. Do def. (14) "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" Diana Ross [16-12]

(1) "I Will Always Love You" Whitney Houston def. (4) "Lady Marmalade" Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mýa and Pink [17-11]
(15) "Don't Leave Me This Way" Thelma Houston def. (3) "It's Oh So Quiet" Björk [16-12]

With that, we move on to the Elite Eight of ATRL March Madness, where eight reimagined renditions continue to chase the title of the most indispensable cover. This is only the second time ever that a #16 seed has advanced this far in the tournament. ("Back to Black" made it all the way to the Final Four during our British singles battle in 2018.) With an unpredecented two #15 seeds also in the regional finals, this is a wild contest that might only get wilder. Check out the updated draw below:

By the way, this does mean that Mariah, who started the tournament with four entries, more than anyone else, is now out! New round begins tonight.

YAS so many of my votes from this round won!!  "Don't Leave Me This Way" was playing in the lobby of my apartment building as I left for work today, so I clearly manifested its win.  Didn't I say it'd be Whitney vs. Thelma in the quarterfinals???:alexz:

Also, as much as I love Natalie QUEENbruglia, I don't think "Torn" is the "most indispensable cover" -- it's barely a cover in our collective mind to begin with...  There, I said it :giraffe:

I guess you decided being perma-banned was not in your best interest, or we’d lose the best host on ATRL. :clap3:

I just want to let everyone know that dispicable record executives saw the original artist singing “Torn” at a live show, and straight up stole the song for Natalie Imbruglia to record- so I cannot, in good faith, allow that song to advance (this is a true story, you can google it). And that Valerie cover is really damn good anyway.

Also, GJWTHF is iconic but it’s hardly a cover, and Heaven deserves (until it has to go up agains It’s My God)

reminder that one of the best videos of all time, the video for It’s My Life, should be considered when you guys vote.

thanks so much for hearing my campaign. “Muah” - robbed queen, Holly Valance.
