Ain't No Mountain High Enough was better than both songs. It was just way underseeded. I would love to see the 16 seed (GJWHF) and 14 seed (ANMHE) face off in the Elite 8. That would be the seeding equivalent of 2023 FDU and 2021 Abilene Christian facing off in an Elite 8 in college basketball.

The seeds were based on all of your votes. So the results being so different from that is at least somewhat surprising.

I'm genuinely surprised you voted for this! You usually hate power ballads.

I don’t like power ballads and think IWALY is …okay.  But I was never really fully sold by the eternal flame cover tbqh.  Something is missing. The group that covered tide is high did it better.  Or was that the same group?

Not one but two match-ups came down to the wire in the second round of the Whitney Division. While #3 "It's Oh So Quiet" pulled away from its back-and-forth battle with #6 "Don't Know Why" at the very end, it took until the final vote for #15 "Don't Leave Me This Way" to claim victory over #7 "Venus." There was a surprisingly robust challenge to #1 "I Will Always Love You" from #9 "Eternal Flame," but The Voice could not be stopped. With fellow girl group classic #5 "Freak Like Me" falling to #4 "Lady Marmalade", which features a former star of NBC's "The Voice," most of the top seeds in the region are still standing.

(1) "I Will Always Love You" Whitney Houston def. (9) "Eternal Flame" Atomic Kitten [18-11]
(4) "Lady Marmalade" Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mýa and Pink def. (5) "Freak Like Me" Sugababes [18-11]
(3) "It's Oh So Quiet" Björk def. (6) "Don't Know Why" Norah Jones [15-14]
(15) "Don't Leave Me This Way" Thelma Houston def. (7) "Venus" Bananarama [15-14]

With that, we move on to the Sweet Sixteen of ATRL March Madness, where 16 reimagined renditions remain chasing the title of the most indispensable cover. An impressively large contingent of low-ranked entries is still in contention — six songs that were seeded #11 or below. That happens to be the same number of surviving tracks credited to acts with male performers, though notably only one of them has a male vocalistCheck out the updated draw below:

Took me getting to old to appreciate "Don't Know Why," but I do love it now.

The eight Sweet Sixteen showdowns are now in place (find a complete draw here) as we move a step closer to naming the most indispensable cover. Will Gwen Stefani & Co. continue their romp through the draw or is Aretha Franklin's signature hit simply too classic a classic to lose? As always, in each of the match-ups below, please pick the song that keeps on turning and burning. Happy voting!
