I know talking about vocal technique is obnoxious to a lot of people and I got laughed at last time I said this but I'm a k-boomer so humor me for a second. Every time people dig up that video of Luna and Jake it reminds me that most people cannot tell good singing from bad. Luna was better than (then-known-as) Charice in that video and, like, significantly so too. Even at the peak of his moment as a soprano before he transitioned, Jake Zyrus was not very good. That One Moment in Time performance was a throaty strain-fest, especially if you compare it to literally any capable singer doing the same song. He was pretty much Christina Aguilera-ing it, i.e. using really bad and unhealthy technique to achieve a fake "big" sound and then just yelling everything outside of his comfort zone. Just because someone is billed as being a great singer it doesn't mean it's true. Even before he transitioned, he basically destroyed his voice over the course of a few years because of how badly he was abusing it.

 

Also, if I can dust off my f(x) stan card for a second, Luna can do ridiculous vocal acrobatics too, she just didn't usually because they went beyond where her voice was comfortable and healthy. Good singers should be aware of their level of ability and its limits, and Jake (then-Charice) was not.

 

I'm not too familiar with Filipino singers but I've noticed there is a tendency to favor that Aguilera-ish style at the expense of, like. Doing good singing. Regine Velasquez also does it and she's not very good either  Interestingly, Morissette Amon, who is a notably better singer than Jake was in that video with Luna, sang the same song once and did it the exact same way even though she demonstrably knows better so maybe it is a cultural thing.

 

 

On topic: I went back and listened to that Weeekly song after someone posted a performance of it and it's actually good. Huh. 

Lol you figured it out, nice observation! Filipinos loooove to emulate the vocal divas (e.g., Whitney, Mariah, Xtina, Celine, etc.). To be fair, most Filipinos don't even have access to vocal lessons because they are seen as pricey and only rich people have access to it here. Filipino vocalists literally just copy the divas' vocals by ear, without any professional help. That's why although their voices are powerful, when you look into the technicalities standpoint, they really have bad vocal techniques (e.g., they scream to reach the high-notes). What's worse is the ordinary audience don't see that because they are as ignorant with regards to correct/good vocal techniques.

 

But singing is subjective. Having a bad technique doesn't mean you sound bad to people, but it does make you a bad vocalist in a sense that you are being reckless with your vocal chords. Imo, an essential part of being a good vocalist is to be smart with your vocal techniques and knowing how to preserve and take care of your voice.
