The trouble with Age Ain't Nothing But a Number is that it's a literal grooming album and I can't unhear that from songs like the title track or "Old School."

Unfortunately, this listen has reaffirmed my belief that One In a Million is overrated. Outside of the singles and a couple of the album tracks (love you, "Choosey Lover"!), it's sort of dull. Self-titled is truly her magnum opus and it's a bummer that One In a Million is the one that always gets cited instead.

Each to their own, but I wholeheartedly disagree with your statement about One in a Million being overrated.

I think it's Aaliyah's most cohesive work. The flow of the album is immaculate, production is magnificent and ahead of its time considering it was released in 1996. In my opinion, there are 2 to 3 tracks that could be seen as weaker ones, albeit far away from being dull and fillers.

That being said, I found new appreciation for Aaliyah. I have always liked the album a lot, but the ballads have finally settled for me and I absorbed all the nuances that the production has to offer. :jonny4:

Another thing, I don't think I have heard Don't Know What to Tell Ya before today, and I must say, it's a bop! It's the song that really epitomize Aaliyah's artistic style.

Yup, nice song but it's LITERALLY called Age Aint Nothing But a Number, doesn't matter if it sounds good that song makes my stomach churn :skull: The nerve to be that open and proud about it in the music... (him, not Aaliyah obv)

And yup, self titled deserves to dominate hard. I mean maybe for its time OIAM was a killer album with the coldest beats and production but

Not to mention the Intro track is lowkey legendary... what a genius way to open the album :jonny5:

The self titled is just so much better than OIAM in terms of innovation, themes, production, lyrics. Ugh. But OIAM is still an amazing album.

working on this now...

I will say that One In A Million and AALIYAH have always been sort of tied for me, both literally have the same amount of plays in my library. But Self-titled has the lyrics and OIAM has the best overall vocals. I really wonder what I Care 4 U sounded like on the demo.

I also decided to participate, so now we have 10 ballots, hope to receive more  :jonny5:
