Planet Mars Posted May 4, 2022 Posted May 4, 2022 Was in the mood for some classic soul today and figured I bring that over to ATRL. These are several big hits by the 70's most prominent male R&B vocal groups, which is your favorite? 1. The Stylistics - You Are Everything (1971) 2. The Temptations - Just My Imagination (1971) 3. The Main Ingredient - Everybody Plays the Fool (1972) 4. The O'Jays - Love Train (1972) 5. Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes - If You Don't Know Me by Now (1972) 6. The Four Tops - Ain't No Woman (Like the One I've Got) (1973) 7. The Spinners - The Rubberband Man (1976) Not by any means a comprehensive list, but these are some of my favorites of the era. Favorites? Tag List: @GoodGuyGoneGhetto @Materialboy215 @Armani? @Thinking Of You @Kool_Aid_King @suburbannature @dabunique @Devin @Sweet Sexy Savage @NavyBlue @JCsNumba1Fan

Planet Mars Posted May 4, 2022 Author Posted May 4, 2022 I'm going with the Main Ingredient on this one, Everybody Plays the Fool is that song, but they honestly all slap. Amazing era in music
JCsNumba1Fan Posted May 4, 2022 Posted May 4, 2022 (edited) This is not easy. I’m struggling. I enjoy ALL these songs, but when I narrow it down (after listening to some for the first time in a looooong time), it’s between “If You Don’t Know Me By Now,” “You Are Everything” and “Ain’t No Woman (Like the One I Got).” That’s Sunday morning house cleaning music. I distinctly remember The Stylistics being played all the time, and back then I was like, “Ugh, there goes my dad playing that old ass music again.” Now that I’m older, wiser and have developed an acquired taste for well preserved seasoning on my Soul/R&B, the same stuff I used to clown my parents about is what I listen to now. I’m just going to be biased right now because I don’t think there’s a wrong answer. All of these are classics, but “You Are Everything” continues to thrive in my head because it’s been sampled a million times and yet the original continues to retain its supremacy. Bless Russell Thompkins Jr. for his iconic falsetto. Thank you, @Planet Mars for another thread for the culture. Keep tagging me! Edited May 4, 2022 by JCsNumba1Fan

The production is immaculate for a 1971 song. It’s been sampled so many times since, also, and is just an ethereal classic.

I actually prefer, "Stop, Look and listen" from that album but YAE is by far the most iconic.
Armani? Posted May 4, 2022 Posted May 4, 2022 I think You Make Me Feel Brand New is my fave from the Stylistics over this song

jdanton2 Posted May 4, 2022 Posted May 4, 2022 from that list You Are Everything, , If You Don't Know Me By Now and Love Train are the best . there were better songs by those groups that also went top 10.

Stop, Look, Listen to You Heart is my favorite by the Stylistics, but that missed the Top 10. You Make Me Feel Brand New was their biggest hit though, peaked at #2 on the Hot 100. You Are Everything is their most remembered though because it's so frequently sampled and redone. My favorite from the Spinners is actually between I'll Be Around which peaked at #3, and It's A Shame, which peaked at #13 (written by Stevie Wonder). The Rubberband Man and Working My Way Back to You both peaked at #2, but the latter peaked in 1980 so it's not the 70's. Edited May 4, 2022 by Planet Mars
