Lady Gaga

Watched the film last night and whew.

The movie is not THAT bad, really. It's just painfully boring and such a slog to finish. Strongest part was the early act then went a steady downhill. joaquin was good and so was Gaga but good lord the script and the pacing...a choice I guess.

And I know that this is called Joker but it was marketed as being top-billed by Gaga and Phoenix and it's such a waste of Harley's character to witness her being relegated as a background character as the movie went on. It's also kinda funny that she just magically pops up every now and then lol

I think I saw a screenshot of someone listening to it last week and it looked like it took up the whole phone screen (the green colors of the bathroom blurred behind the track info/buttons

Gaga sold her character as someone who's been through so much **** that she became quiet but the truth is her character is just some crazy fangirl that loves serial killers. The original backstory in the film turns out to be a lie and she was rich and spoilt all along. Like her character doesn't have any depth at all. Her only role was to sing and prop up Joker. This whole 'Lee was broken by society' narrative wasn't told in the movie at all. It's the first time it feels like Gaga was tricking us into thinking her character was deeper than it really was. Some of her scenes almost felt like satire. It really wasn't that deep of a character to begin with as far as the final cut goes. All Gaga scenes were already in the trailer except for the last scene on the stairs which was already spoilt by paparazzi. Her only solo scenes were 15 seconds of her stealing the TV and walking up the stairs and then taking an elevator which all felt like pointless scenes. Also her arriving at the courtroom. All of which were seen in full in the trailer. Also there's so much solo Joker singing scenes in comparison to Gaga. :chick3:

Spoiler

I get them tricking us in interviews and promo since they didn't wanna spoil it, but really wish they dug deeper. I actually liked the twist and the fact that she is still a student of psychology, but wish we got some more scenes with that tying into her obsession with him and her views of society and the whole situation with Joker

Because Harlequin debuted with less than L4S despite having two originals & US liddos weren't buying DWAS (21k first week)

She's probably in a worse off position than going into Chromatica (coming from ASIB), but perhaps better than Joanne (coming from ARTPOP).

I think she has a little playing catchup to do since she's been out of the pop scene for 4+ years but she can easily gain that back with the right single choices.

Because DWAS is Hag'd & her first follow-up full LP since L4S is jazz again, and people may have found it more digestible in between eras in 2021 when it was released, especially with the Tony retirement narrative. This time, her fan base was tricked into thinking they were getting the piece of work they've wanted from her forever, to then press play and hear Good Morning, and that rug pull will have for sure got some casual fans putting her on the bold step, which we should hope subsides by first single release.

They're idiotic incels like this is the

misogynistic audience Toad conjured up with the first movie. Ofc they'd rush to blame Gaga as there weren't writers and the director who had do make it work. Ofc they'd blame her bc they see Gaga as a one dimensional human who can only sing as if are didn't eat in House of Gucci. I've need normal people NOT blame Gaga for the music element - a vast majority

yes, and?

Made sense until Fraudd cut all her scenes out and ruined the final edit. The real Grace Randolph said the earlier cuts were much better… like this fumble was last minute

Yeah, I'm starting to think she's sending a message to Todd with the silence. It's weird. :rip:

What exactly were we tricked in thinking we were gonna get lol. By the time it was confirmed an album did we not already know it was full of standard covers.

For those who haven't seen it, this is not a case of "category fraud." Gaga's role is surprisingly limited. While she brings her formidable presence to the screen, her character takes a backseat to Fleck's internal turmoil, often serving as a musical complement when the film calls for it. Gaga's portrayal of Harley Quinn offers a dark, nuanced take on the iconic villain — it's a more reserved, sinister interpretation than you might expect. It's also the film's one true standout performance (along with Leigh Gill, reprising his role as Gary Puddles from the first film).

the reaction has not been ideal but this really is only a blip in the longevity her career. regardless the film style was risky

Just got out of the movie, and… I kinda liked it lol. It was slow at times and needed more energy (and Gaga), but it was still okay.

Also, the people next to me really liked it lol. Like they were actually talking about how cool it was.

My real thoughts on the movie if anyone cares...(caution: spoilers)

gretchen.gif

Spoiler

- Just want to preface this by saying that I know nothing about the Joker lore/DC universe/etc. I'm approaching this as a Gaga stan who only saw the movie because she was in it. And I skimmed through the first movie last night and read the plot on Wikipedia so I'm not exactly an expert on this franchise.
- The movie was OKAY. It wasn't as horrible as everyone is making it out to be. But it was boring and forgettable. And I completely understand why it is panned and why it will bomb at the box office. It could have been a great film though. The ingredients were all there. But Toad Phillips, you BLEW IT!
beatup.gif

- The marketing of the movie was completely misleading. The film is literally titled "Folie A Deux" -- delusion shared by two people. Prior to the Venice reviews, I was expecting the movie to be completely centered around the romance between Joker and Lee. i.e. they meet in prison, Gaga helps Joker escape, they're on the run, they wreak havoc on Gotham City together until conflict arises between them and they're cornered by the police, they are captured and one of them betrays the other, one or both ends up in jail, they reconcile, etc. Something more exciting and suspenseful, and I think the fans of the movie would have given a sequel a chance had it been more like this. Instead, 95% of the movie was a close-up on Joaquin's face, and the other 5% was Gaga sitting in a courtroom. Todd could have done so much with this story and the characters, and decided instead to make it a courtroom drama rehashing every plot point from the first movie. Overall, just a completely missed opportunity.
- Making this movie a musical was a bad idea from the start. Someone lied to Todd several times. It felt gimmicky and a bit cringe every time Joaquin opened his mouth to sing, and this is coming from someone who LOVES musicals. If I was in charge, I would have limited the musical aspect to a single dream sequence -- maybe the part where Gaga and Joker sing "To Love Somebody" -- and maybe a few parts where Joker hums or sings to himself. Maybe pick one song and make it a recurring motif throughout the film, rather than forcing a bunch of songs into the plot that have nothing to do with each other.

- There were SO MANY repetitive scenes. Joker being dragged out of his cell, talking to the guards, Gaga sitting in the courtroom, Joker being dragged back into his cell, Joker being dragged out of his cell, talking to the guards, Gaga sitting in the courtroom, Joker being dragged back into his cell... All that wasted time could have been spent delving into Joker and Lee's romance and digging deeper into Lee's backstory.

- 95% of Gaga's lines and screen time being in the trailer was the worst part of this whole experience :skull:

- $200 Million for THIS? :rip: Warner Brothers and/or the US government needs to do a full audit and investigation of the finances of this movie because something is not adding up.

You should have stopped them and told them to add a positive review to RT to bring her score up.
