Can we all just take a moment to digest the fact that NONE of Gaga's peers have EVER had a moment as big as JFAD is about to be? If they play their cards right, this can be a $250M opener WW. That's INSANE for a pop star on her 3rd starring role, nvm how much else she's already accomplished with her illustrious music career. Can't wait for this ride… less than 6 months to go & many more exciting events to come in between I keep trying to articulate what a momentous occasion this is and I just can not put it into words. Popstars typically only get roles because of their name or to be a quick cameo... this is truly unprecedented among her peers. 1

Gaga is and will always be that girl. 1
Abracadabra Posted April 11 Posted April 11 1 hour ago, Jessie said: Yeah it's hard to make apples to apples comparisons as the movie industry is so different now but Barbara Streisand was one of the biggest marquee names of New Hollywood, lead box office smashes across different genres and decades (not to mention her multiple soundtrack smashes) before shifting to directing, becoming only the third female director to ever be nominated for Best Picture back in the 90s. She even has an iconic swing and miss with Hello Dolly! that effectively sank the big budget traditional movie musical as a reliable box office draw on release. It's a truly iconic career and it's big that Gaga is even being compared so early in her transition to film, and racking up as many noms as she has so far. Cher also did far more movies than Gaga has in a similar time frame, as well having an initial failed attempt a decade before, earning her salt on Broadway before her string of successes in the 80s. So while her career in film slowed down after her Oscar win, she had put in years of work before that capstone (and she was in three movies the year she won, including The Witches of Eastwick — the kind of studio system, movie star hustle that Gaga has carefully tip toed around so far while building her credibility). But yes, Gaga becoming this big a draw in the modern era has never really been done by a popstar which is why so many people are itching to see her fail. The only other star that was shaping up to potentially make that kind of cultural shift was Madonna with a string of decent gigs, but Hollywood never warmed to her fully as an actress, the climate was less forgiving (treated like a punching bag by the Razzies), she had more misses than hits and she struggled to build on what success she did have, and by the 00s the door was shut. The closest modern contemporary in terms of movie stardom for a pop star is Jennifer Lopez. Before Gaga she was the biggest example, but she again built her career in a different climate in the 90s / 00s on mid to low budget rom coms and thrillers. J Lo is also a little different because she established herself as an actress before a pop star. It's actually hard to think of any pop star or musical artist in decades who has established themselves as not only being an acclaimed actor but also a movie star in the way Gaga has (and is continuing to build on) besides Will Smith. Justin Timberlake managed a successful acting career, but a lot of his biggest movies are supporting roles or rom-coms and he's never really had the type of critical acclaim that Gaga has received. Of course there are other musical artists that have had steady and successful acting careers like Lenny Kravitz, Mary J Blige, Janelle Monae, Queen Latifah, but none of them are really box office draws in the way Gaga has been embraced. It really doesn't get mentioned enough just how truly impressive her film career is. 4 1

It is not comparable. 2
Rino Posted April 11 Posted April 11 I'm glad for all the positive reactions to the teaser but I won't allow myself to get overjoyed until we see the film itself 1

Jessie Posted April 11 Posted April 11 - October opening record - First October movie to open above $100m - Biggest fall opening - Biggest opening for an R movie - WB's domestic opening record From most to least likely, I wonder how high it can go. FáD only needs to stay flat in terms of admissions to secure the October opening from its predecessor and only a 10% increase on its opening numbers to land in the $130m range which would challenge Deadpool for the R rated record. A decrease due to a box office that is still trying to rebuild itself post-pandemic and has shown can be a cruel place to even the biggest IP if the movie seems superfluous is obviously a possibility, but it's clear from the response to the trailer the cultural cache is still there and people are perched and are treating it as a movie event to take seriously. I can't see it making less than Dune / Godzilla x Kong as a floor even if the word of mouth is mixed. 7
pablozedd Posted April 11 Posted April 11 I think the next trailer will be from Harley's perspective. Just like Todd released first set photos of Arthur alone, and then Harley's. 2

Sannie Posted April 11 Posted April 11 She really is in a good position this time around. Her third movie after two critically acclaimed performances and one so many thought she was robbed an Oscar nomination for. This movie is right up the alley of the Critics Choice, Golden Globes, and SAG Awards I think the only thing that will hurt her is if the movie itself is panned, but I do not see that right now.

vince_martin88 Posted April 11 Posted April 11 We need LG7 to tie in with Joker 2 hype. Please don't do the same mistake with the ASIB-Chroma timeline again. We need LG7 before Venice and hopefully Joker 2 will give it a second wind through awards season. 2 3
Bhabylon Posted April 11 Posted April 11 Yeah I'm sure she'll do cross promo if she does end up dropping an album before the film. She's already going to be on those late night talk shows, might as well tie the album in
GraceRandolph Posted April 11 Posted April 11 The only shot I don't like is the one where they both kick their legs up. It's so fanservicey in a corny way. 3
