That selena quote about her preferring to be everyone's best friend and she can not be a goddess like Adele and Beyonce sums up the disconnect between Gen Z and Bey. It really is about the para social relationship these days. Not that I want Beyonce to be that way at all, her privacy is absolutely necessary.

Yall should see this... this is exactly how the GP sees her in comparison to Taylor (especially starting at 4:11 which is basically what Selena said as well)

Breaking my silence… I’m only going to say this once and then I’m taking it to the grave.

I think the main issue here is that it's just an appearance... like none of these podcast men are getting invites to either of these women's pool parties. :dies:

One of them has a deep parasocial connection with her fans that goes beyond music, they feel like they know her and she cares about them, they think she does everything on her own, and shares every part of her life in songs. Which is all in their heads.

Whereas Beyoncé has not really played into that game. She came up in the 90's. When "No, No, No" entered the Hot 100, less than 1 in 5 households even had internet in the US, let alone global figures. She exists to make art, present it, perform it for fans — then she clocks out. She lets us in with small glimpses, i.e. her documentaries, but otherwise she's a very private person.

The public today expects and feels entitled to learn about celebrities' personal lives and speculate about relationship and friendship drama. Even when Bey had drama, she handled it very carefully and crafted a profound artistic project. No interviews about feuds, no cryptic social media posts, no paparazzi walks in NYC.

This is exactly how Bey wants to be seen. Even before her ascension to Mount Olympus, she rarely/if ever pretended to be anyone’s best friend. A lot can be said on the harm this strategy has caused her brand in the streaming era, but she doesn’t seem to care. The LOTR reference is interesting when comparing Bey & Tay though - the creator vs. the savior. A new savior/hero type always rises, but the creator is eternal.

He never really got to the point lol, but yeah this is basically it.

Taylor (like Selena) has an appeal that reaches because she tries to relate to her fans, and does so, wonderfully.

Beyoncé's appeal is old Hollywood, she doesn't care to be relatable or have you as friend. She doesn't even pretend to care about trying to act like she does.

Sums it up really.

I don’t ever want Bey to be as relatable as these other girls, I think so many celebs would benefit from not talking sometimes. I thought that the pandemic helped people realize that these people are not our friends but it feels as if these parasocial relationships have worsened.

It’s okay for celebs to seem untouchable, we shouldn’t worship  them but I certainly wouldn't want B trying to act “quirky” on Tik Tok, it’s just not her brand and I like that

I'm sorry, it is not beyonce's fault you feel less than. She does not need to force herself to be "attainable" because you are insecure and fetishising her existence.

Bey has paid her dues way more than selena or taylor ever will. She has done her rounds of stupid interviews and jokes to be the "nice girl" shes never going to that again because its a marketing ploy in itself that she doesn't care to do. She has real life with KIDS that need her attention.

I think some people on here still don't get that. Yes even its the bare minimum we all want her to do...she has made it known CLEARLY that she will do what she wants when she wants.

Selena is severely insecure and her comment was very stupid actually.

The gag is TAYLOR and SELENA are the attainable ones cause they are white adjacent(selena) and full white (taylor). lets not forget that

diva >>>>> best friend :giraffe:

i have plenty of friends in my real life, i dont need my faves to try and fit into that too. maybe others can’t relate and that’s why the parasocial bonds get wild (see also: kpop), but idk that’s their problem i fear

RIGHT! Cuz every time people talk about the GP - it’s people that look like them and the men in that video.

Yeah parasocial/quirky/relatable is all the rage rn, but I never want Bey to have to feel to resort to it, it's overdone imo and going to eventually go out of style.

I don't get how she has some of you so pressed like, she's always given props to Beyoncé and stated several times that she looks up to her :deadbanana2:

Fans are fans but it's not like there's beef. :toofunny3:

Even at her most "relatable" Beyoncé was never the "relatable" girl. It was always about what she could do: how she sounded, the way she performed, her beauty (yes), but not "aw I love her." So it's funny when people try to shade her now by saying "I miss when she was relatable" like... you are the same person who would have proclaimed you couldn't stan her because you didn't relate to her, because you still are!

ok I didn't even intend to rant wow

Being “relatable” is whats IN right now. The evolution of social media + TikTok rise from COVID, artists wanna be close to their fans as much as possible (regardless of their talent/skills). No one wants to be a star anymore.

Bey comes from a time when you had to be a STAR – being relatable to them is signing autographs, take pics, meet n greets, etc. This generation relatability was things indie/Tinashe-level career artists did back then.

I blame the usual suspects lurking and reporting the min we discuss her here. :dies:

truly though Beyoncé's image is so well manicured. it's one of the most amazing things about her as a pop entity. she's carved her own lane when it comes to celebrity archetypes. because as much as we could liken her to a Prince, Sade, or even a Garbo, she's not like any of them in how they approach(ed) their work, brand, career, etc.

The real gag is none of these almost billionaires are relatable and everyone is falling for the manufactured persona of “ one of the girls”. The intentional pap walks with famous friends is playing in your face lol.   People are dumb. I do see the correlation between the artists that are close to fans and dominating on either streaming (swift) or followers (Selena), hec even Nicki has a great gen z fanbase due to her online activity.

Anyways, thank goodness I never cared about what Beyoncés favorite color was. I’ve always just wanted music, performances and her thoughts on the creative component.

If she never showed us her children or revealed any other details about her personal life, my enjoyment as a stan would not affected one bit.

I wouldn't say I see Beyoncé as a goddess but the aura of mystique around her, like Madonna once had, is very appealing to me.

And I certainly prefer that to the borderline deranged parasocial relationships most people around my age (esp girls and gays) are so into atm.
