Round #3 - The Record Label Challenge

You've probably heard of writing camps - set up by labels looking for writers to come up with songs for their artists. This round you find yourself in an imaginary writing camp, and you have the choice of four labels to write for. Each label has a different artist and is looking for a different style and sound, headed by one of our judges, so make your choice wisely. This season, I'm bringing back "hiring" to this round. If the CEO of your chosen label thinks that your song fits what they asked for, you will receive bonus points to your score!

Vikar Olvirsson, a 23 year-old icelandic boy has been signed to Orbital under the name of Forests. Vikar was discovered by Orbital's founder, Andór, at an underground café in Bergen, Norway.

Vikar started as a folk singer but he has explored different genres throughout his musical career. Lately he's been experimenting with synth-pop, dream pop and electronica, he also incorporates some elements of europop and PBR&B.

Vikar and Andór have been discussing about Forests' debut album, Occult. Both of them want to make songs that are personal and authentic to the artist's essence and life. Vikar really wants to reflect himself as a person instead of a typical role model on this album. He wants to portray himself as both, the victim and the villain on the album.

He really wants to show the world all his facets.

Some of the experiences he'd like to share are: when he got kicked out of his parents' house at 16, the hollow feeling he gets when he sees a couple in love because he feels like he won't ever feel that way because he's asexual, when he used to sell drugs to survive in the streets of Norway, a song about feeling content with being imperfect, a song called 'Moirai' (incarnations of destiny) about the beauty of how fate can be so uncertain. He just wants to create songs that will help his fans to overcome the lack of hope that comes from having an unstable life.

Vikar would like his songs to be poetic, metaphoric and a little avant garde. He's very devoted to nature, fantasy and occultism. So any metaphors that are related to any of those things would be great for him.

He wants to show authenticity on this album so he would really appreciate if you present your lyrics in a non-conventional way. Think outside of the box!

Vikar believes you can get inspiration from songs that are sonically similar to what he wants to create, so he has some to share with you to help you get into that state of mind:

Zola Jesus - Ixode

The Kite String Tangle - Given the Chance
SOHN - Tremors

Ellie Goulding - The Ending

Caribou - Silver

Aquilo - I Gave It All

Postiljonen - Supreme

Deptford Goth - Feel Real

Lucy Rose - She'll Move

Kyla La Grange - Skin

We say goodbye to you in hopes our paths meet on the same orbit.

Vikar and Andór.

776 Records

CEO: @Temporal

Genre: Indiepop, Synthpop

Artist: LIGHTSOUT
LIGHTSOUT - formerly King Glade - is an American solo artist, who had humble beginnings in the Indie scene for about a year. He released an EP independently, "High Tyde" to nearly a million streams cumulatively, when he inked a contract with 776 Records as his first major label deal. This was right around the time of Platinum Hit 9, and while the label was looking to push him to the very top echelons of the Pop scene, his singles from his debut album "Melody Therapy" were relatively unsuccessful, with his five singles peaking at didn't chart, #17, #13, #7 and #5 respectively on the 17 position Platinum Chart. Now, his label is aiming for a reboot, going back to the drawing board, looking for critical success over the commercial, ala Carly Rae Jepsen's "Emotion," to set up a loyal fanbase.

The label is looking for lyrics that will appeal to his Indie fan base but also be digestible enough that casual listeners can resonate with it. The lyrics should pique a listener's interest, not just go in one ear and out the other, and have a key concept, phrase or image to tie everything together. They should make the listener want to find the Genius annotations for them, and think about different interpretations, and push the boundaries of Pop. You can think of Carly's deeper cuts, sure - "Warm Blood" for instance - but also darker and more thoughtful lyrics, like Tame Impala and Paramore ("After Laughter" playing nicely into this). The tone and mood of the lyrics are completely free reign, as long as they have a lot of thought in them.

Artist: Maria Praise

Attention all aspiring songwriters! Red Rose Records are looking for new talent to assist our latest signing Maria Praise with her debut solo studio album, which we are hoping to launch during the Summer of 2017

Maria Praise is an upcoming driven 22-year old artist from Alberta, Canada. Some of you may remember Maria as the keyboardist and lead female vocalist for the successful Christian-rock band "Jesus Won't Tell". After the disbandment of the group in late 2015, Maria took a year off to rediscover herself as a person and as a solo artist and is ready to make her debut on the international music scene an impactful one, aiming to bring her unique pop style to Top 40 radio

Maria is a feminist and considers herself to be a powerfulself-sufficient woman, and would love to encourage others to follow in her image. Growing up a devout Christian, Maria felt sexually restricted growing up, and during her year off discovered a lot about owning her sexual freedom rather than covering it up, and would love to channel this on her album.

At heart, Maria is still very much a religious and spiritual person, and would also like to have some songs about religion and explore both the good and bad of having such a religious upbringing. Despite Jesus Won't Tell's disbandment, Maria remains close friends with all of the band members, particularly lead male vocalist and guitarist Neil Cross, and would love to collaborate with him again on a duet

Some of Maria's favourite songs she would love to channel on her album:

Amy Shark – "Weekends"

Ariana Grande – "Dangerous Woman"

Dua Lipa & Miguel – "Lost In Your Light"

Halsey – "Young God"

Jhené Aiko – "Blue Dream"

Katy Perry – "Spiritual"

MØ – "Maiden"

Meghan Trainor & John Legend – "Like I'm Gonna Lose You"

Samantha Jade – "Armour"

Tove Styrke – "Snaren"

If any of this inspires or interests you, and you feel like you are the songwriter we are looking for, please do not hesitate to contact Red Rose Records with an example of your work.

Many thanks,

Red Rose Records Management

Angry Mom Records

CEO: @keshaspearsxo

After an unsuccessful writing camp last season, in which they received a staggering zero entries, Angry Mom Records are relaunching and rebranding with a new artist in a bid to save themselves from inevitable bankruptcy.

Angry Mom Records are looking for songs for their new artist, Jackson Reid, to release on his debut album. After signing him, they found out Jackson was actually not as talented as they had anticipated. They at first expected him to write all his own songs, but after hearing how bad they were, have found themselves in the predicament in which they have to reach out for songs again.

Jackson's vocal talent is also limited to say the least, so the label sonically is looking for "breezy", more chilled out tracks that he can handle. Lyrically, they are looking for something that will gain Jackson sympathy - he isn't very good looking, either, so they find it unlikely that he will be able to garner a fan base on anything other than sob stories - so they are asking for more emotional, vulnerable material; though they state they are not necessarily looking for dark material, but rather more general sentimental and personal songs, perhaps relating to themes of romance, nostalgia, or confession.

Rules:

PM your entry to me by this time!

Don't forget to include your label (and optionally a explanation behind it)

Late entries will receive late penalties

So we can pick whoever we want right? or are there limited spots for each judge's writing camp?  I like Red Rose/ Orbital's descriptions the most at the moment.

well I pretty much copied my label from last season, where I said lyrically stuff like Piece by Piece (Kelly Clarkson), She Keeps Me Warm (Mary Lambert), Someone Like You (Adele), Back to Black (Amy Winehouse), Grins (Charli XCX), Ribs (Lorde), but there are tonnes of examples really. it's pretty open to interpretation so i'd rather you took the themes i said and be inspired by those emotions rather than look at these songs for inspiration tbh

99% of Vocaloid songs were crap but JBF was legit the best pop song of 2009, East or West

Let me choose Aurora since the history seems to be very familiar to history of pop star called Katy Perry.

1. Florence and Jay Z mix

2. Adele and Gaga mix

3. Katy Perry

4. Ed

That's exactly what I thought when I was reading it.

I like to think that Angry Mom Records would get songs better than Ed's

I think I'm going for Orbital records, I've been trying to make digestible songs this season with no success, but this challenge opens me a door to truly make the stuff I like; stuff with a lot of f*cking metaphors  :duca:
