Kavish Posted September 8, 2021 Posted September 8, 2021 ⸸ Kavish ⛧ Kritiques ⸸ ~ Sugababes - Push The Button A non-Christmas Christmas-sounding song. It pushes the right buttons with its racy beat and catchy melody. Fleur East – Mine Despite the chorus offering a much needed oomph, the song remains average overall. The verses are pretty mild and the bridge doesn't elevate it enough. Sugababes - About You Now The contrast between the upbeat instrumental and the subject matter is commendable. The rhythm moves forward while the women long for the past. Fittingly, a nostalgic classic. All Saints - Pure Shores Feels very spatial, like journeying out into the starry night to be somewhere I belong. The verse slowly ascending my body towards the sky, and the chorus propelling me into the unknown. From the bridge onwards, I have found my new home, and I am liberated from Earth. Lets Eat Grandma - Hot Pink I adjusted myself in the beginning to tolerate the vocals, but then came a clash of noise that sounded like a bunch of kitchen utensils being played with and then dropped to the floor. Maybe that was the point of the song considering the name of the duo, and for Grandma's sake, I hope she did get eaten. I felt compelled to sit through it though, so the chaos grew on me after a while, like being influenced by the neighbour's kids that my mother warned me against. Clean Bandit – Symphony Zara Dawson's vocal delivery is the most noteworthy aspect of this song, for Clean Bandit's production sounds generic unlike some of their most ambitious hits. Florence + The Machine - Ship To Wreck The sense of urgency is felt throughout, as each verse builds towards the explosive chorus. As a distressed Florence calls for Mayday, the masochist in me finds beauty in the wreckage. Amelia Lily - You Bring Me Joy The chorus is jubilant, which means that Amelia has somehow succeeded. While it sounds like a basic radio song that I wouldn't mind hearing, I would not voluntarily listen to it if left to my own devices. Spice Girls - Say You'll Be There A cute throwback. The harmonica during the bridge sounds unharmonious at times, but it is an addition that turns an unexceptional song into a memorable one. Steps - Heartbreak In This City The song sounds dated despite being released in the past year, probably because of its generic production and it passing as a musical theater song or television soundtrack. Girls Aloud - On The Metro Loud and fast-paced songs become grating when done incorrectly, especially in EDM, and this is the case here. The song sounds like a mash-up or a remixed version, which is an indication that there is too much going on, and is therefore too uninviting for me to get on board of the metro. Florence + The Machine - Cosmic Love It starts as a dream and transforms apprehensively as the drums accompany her wails, a realisation that she is forever trapped in the dark. So darkness she became. Aptly named "Cosmic Love", the song is majestic. So in love I became. Disclosure – Magnets Good production, but an underwhelming collaboration. Both of these artists are capable of so much more, but we got a run-of-the-mill track instead. "Magnets" doesn't repel me, but it doesn't attract me either. Spice Girls - 2 Become 1 Sweet and chill. The vocals are breezy and melodic, and the string instruments really elevate the song. 90's pop done right. Cher Lloyd - With Ur Love This song is not mixed properly. Cher's attitude is also off-putting here and her ad-libs are annoying, but Mike's part is bearable. Girls Aloud - Call The Shots Great verses paired with a canorous chorus, and an amazing bridge that upgrades the song even more. A sentimental classic. Christina Marie - I'm Coming Home To You This song fails in being deep and touching despite all its efforts. I wanted to blame it on me being dead inside, but there have been songs that have made me feel something in this round, so it cannot be me. Xtina should add some spices to her meal next time. Cher Lloyd - Want U Back Catchy and playful, with the right amount of spunk without sounding too pretentious like in some of her songs. Arctic Monkeys - R U Mine? The instrumentation is top notch despite the vocal parts being in discordance with it at the beginning. Really love the bridge and the outro as well. Fleur East – Sax The song has a good base and structure, but it lacks in substance, as if Fleur's essence has been pushed aside in order to cater to the demands of radio stations. Leona Lewis - Better In Time The engaging instrumentals paired with Leona's beautiful voice is such a charming and touching fusion. A timeless ballad. Florence + The Machine - Shake It Out A burdened Florence seeps her way onto the chorus with great release, and as she shakes it out, she draws me in, and we dance ceremoniously with the devil on our backs. ~

mokitsu Posted September 8, 2021 Posted September 8, 2021 Spoiler Sugababes - Push The Button: a show-stopped, to be honest. It's one of those songs you loved as a child and then randomly remember one day years later, and realize how infectious and immaculate it really is. Sexy and classy - they really were one of the best girl groups ever. Fleur East - Mine: It's a cute R&B pop midtempo. Reminds me of something Ariana would release during the Dangerous Woman era - this sound is kinda trendy on K-pop right now so it's definitely familiar. It's a nice surprise, but it feels like it's lacking something. We'll see how it stacks up to the rest of the songs. Sugababes - About You Now: Miranda kinda ruined this song for me I can't shake the pre-schooler Nickelodeon vibes. The chorus is really infectious though. All Saints - Pure Shores: It's giving me aquatic Boards of Canada/Ray of Light vibes?? Not one of the strongest, but I like it honestly. Let’s Eat Grandma - Hot Pink: they really were the moment for a hot second in 2018. I can't say I was their biggest fan but I really like this song. Disjointed, clunky and weird - one of SOPHIE's best. Vibrates with tension and anger, but also expresses it through the eyes of a teenager, and I love how she channeled that into the production. Clean Bandit - Symphony: I always liked this. I love how grand and symphonic (ha) it feels, and I really adore the modern touches like the little garage production in the second verse. Zara carries this with elegance and her great vocals and gives it the extra touch it needs. Florence + The Machine - Ship To Wreck: Love Florence and I collapsed when this came out. Even better live. I love her songs about addiction and this album really tackled her issues head on whereas it was more of a joke and character trait in her early work. It's manic and it sounds like she's spiraling and doesn't really know what's going on, and I love that kind of realistic but abstract storytelling in this song. Amelia Lily - You Bring Me Joy: the chorus and word count(?) in the verses is kinda clunky? The production is dated too. Not really a fan. Spice Girls - Say You'll Be There: Really cute. Love the disco production and the G-Funk synth line. Chorus is really catchy. Steps - Heartbreak In This City: Steps are so corny and f@ggy playlist fodder material to me. You'll never be ABBA losers! Girls Aloud - On The Metro: It's giving me 2NE1'd campy kind of dated classic. Not my favorite by any means but I appreciate it for what it is. Probably would be a 10 after a few shots. Florence + The Machine - Cosmic Love: the first album I really loved and still my favorite album after all these years. The storytelling is absolutely gorgeous and the tense production paired with her amazing vocals make this an umatched tour-de-force. I absolutely love the haunted wood nymph cinematic aspect of this project, and this song is one of its best offerings. Disclosure - Magnets: Never liked this; one of their few misses for me. Lorde's husky dragged-out voice never really worked for full blown pop productions for me. Spice Girls - 2 Become 1: Really corny. Is this supposed to be sexy LMFAO?? Sounds like something a virgin would put on while praying at night. Cher Lloyd - With Ur Love: Dated and kinda cringe. Girls Aloud - Call The Shots: I love the feel in the chorus. Just like their other song it's giving me campy dated vibes but I think I like this one better. Christina Marie - I'm Coming Home To You: Cher Lloyd - Want U Back: Pretty dated but still fun. Really cute chorus. Arctic Monkeys - R U Mine?: I feel like there were way better options in this album, but it's still a really solid one. This project got a shitton of flack from their fans but I think it's a rock classic and still holds up really well. Fleur East - Sax: Listened to this randomly last week and for a song I absolutely hated when it came out I have to say it holds up perfectly now. Full of energy, doesn't let you breathe until it's over. Leona Lewis - Better In Time: Boring and played out. Florence + The Machine - Shake It Out: Another excellent Florence song; I think this is my favorite one in a round where all three are top tier. One of the few inspiring positive songs that actually make me raise my head and face the day. Full of emotion and power. Guero Posted September 8, 2021 Posted September 8, 2021 (edited) The Great [citation needed] British Invasion Sugababes - Push The Button This was okay… nothing too special about it. It reminded me of a Christmas song somehow? Fleur East - Mine Again - not much to say about this one. I like her vocals at least. Sugababes - About You Now This sounds like a corny Disney Channel movie song… and not a good one. All Saints - Pure Shoes The vocals were giving me Kylie. It was okay. Let’s Eat Grandma - Hot Pink This went in so many directions at once I almost got whiplash. The vocals also aren’t helping this song that much. The song is also about 1 minute too long. Clean Bandit - Symphony Finally something that’s keeping me awake and not forcefully. There’s something about Clean Bandit’s music that is just so… happy? I’m not sure how to describe it. But I enjoyed this pretty well. Florence + The Machine - Ship To Wreck I said two rounds ago that I couldn’t get into their music, but this one was almost instantaneous. I like the instrumental which really fits Florence’s voice. What a fun ride this song was. Amelia Lily - You Bring Me Joy I’m not sure what’s going on with this but I feel like her voice overpowers the beat of the song? It just makes it feel off and a bit irritating. I feel like I would have liked this more had they mixed the song better. Spice Girls - Say You’ll Be There A classic. Such a good pop song. Steps - Heartbreak In This City This sounds like it belongs in some musical… almost Glee-esque. And I hate musicals. Girls Aloud - On The Metro They made this one for the gays… and it worked. This was great. Florence + The Machine - Cosmic Love Aaaand we’re back to not getting into their music. Disclosure - Magnets This was okay. I think this instrumental fits Lorde very well. Spice Girls - 2 Become 1 This isn’t one of their songs that I have fond memories of but I enjoyed it enough. Cher Lloyd - With Ur Love I’ve never cared for this song, and I think it’s primarily because the chorus is a little irritating. I am glad that she learned how to control her voice in this one at least. Girls Aloud - Call The Shots I might have to check out their discography at some point because I’ve really enjoyed these two songs during this round. Christina Marie - I’m Coming Home To You This was a great nap. Nice voice though. Cher Lloyd - Want U Back Her voice is grating, it's true, but this is such a fun song. Arctic Monkeys - R U Mine? Hearing a male’s voice is kind of refreshing. I can appreciate the risk you took by sending this song, and I actually enjoyed it. Fleur East - Sax I enjoyed this so much more than her earlier song. She really does have a nice voice. Leona Lewis - Better In Time I’ve always enjoyed this song even if I never seek it out. One of her better songs honestly. Florence + The Machine - Shake It Out I remember this being used in so many commercials and I got so tired of the song. With that said, I liked this one more than the one before it. Overprotected Posted September 8, 2021 Author Posted September 8, 2021 Spoiler Sugababes - Push The Button - This came and went and left no big impression on me, the chorus was cute but it kinda went nowhere. Fleur East - Mine - It was alright, kinda generic if you ask me. Sugababes - About You Now - This lacks the punch the Miranda’s version has, but I guess it’s still mostly the same song and I like it so. All Saints - Pure Shores - I love the instrumental here, it’s chill but also the melody is quite catchy. Lets Eat Grandma - Hot Pink - I would kinda like the verses if it wasn’t for their annoying voices, the hyperpop chorus is atrocious. Clean Bandit - Symphony - I always hated this song ngl, very generic, uninspired, dated. Florence + The Machine - Ship To Wreck - Very fun song, one of my faves from her. Amelia Lily - You Bring Me Joy - Why is this kinda trashy yet enjoyable? It’s giving The Fame Gaga a bit :lemmelistening: Spice Girls - Say You'll Be There - One of their best songs!! Very cute and infectious, very 90s :lemmelistening: Steps - Heartbreak In This City - Another cheap song that I surprisingly don’t hate, the chorus melody specially is lovely, it kinda reminds me of Before The Goodbye by Godney Spears :lemmelistening: Girls Aloud - On The Metro - Also kinda trash but this one I didn’t enjoy that much sorry :( Florence + The Machine - Cosmic Love - I like the chorus a bit but it gets tiring by the second one, definitely the worst of the Florence entries for me :( Disclosure - Magnets - It’s just a cute lil bop. Fun fact: did you know New Zealand used to be a British colony? Spice Girls - 2 Become 1 - The “be a little wiser, put it on” part takes me out a bit. I’m usually not a fan of these cheesy 90’s love songs but this one is cute. Cher Lloyd - With Ur Love - This was kinda serving paper planes at the beginning musically but then the chorus was a bit juvenile, it was decent overall tho. Girls Aloud - Call The Shots - The superior Girls Aloud song, very lovely Christina Marie - I'm Coming Home To You - Ok I was gonna hate on this but it is serving something Mariah would sing in the 90’s. Her voice is serving a mix of Whitney and Mariah oh wow :minho: Cher Lloyd - Want U Back - Um no this one is kinda cringy, it gets tired very quick. Arctic Monkeys - R U Mine? - Oop ok rock bop :rockeiro: you know I will stan Fleur East - Sax - Well he better stop playing that sax because it gets annoying after the first chorus. Leona Lewis - Better In Time - I hate it, there’s nothing interesting musically here to make up for the fact that I hate this type of song. Florence + The Machine - Shake It Out - A bit overrated but it’s still nice.
