ughgabriel Posted January 3, 2021 Posted January 3, 2021 Phoebe Bridgers - I Know The End Out of the songs I’ve heard from her, this is the one that I’ve liked the most. It’s very cinematic and pretty. It progressively gets better so I appreciate the length <3 Britney Spears - I Wanna Go This is a nice pop song that I really enjoy. It’s simple and effective. Can’t complain! Marshmello, Demi Lovato - OK Not To Be OK This is enjoyable. It’s generic but it’s not bad. I think the problem is that it is not as outstanding as some other songs in this group. Janet Jackson - Together Again This is very 90s. It’s enjoyable but it is not something that I’d particularly see myself going back to. It feels way too long given that it follows a very monotonous structure. Miley Cyrus - WTF Do I Know Honestly I used to dislike Miley’s music before this era. PH is great! This song is one of the album’s highlights. Love the pop rock sound for her. Bee Gees - Stayin Alive This is the type of song that you’d get up from your seat to dance at a wedding, not because it excites you but because everyone knows it. It’s okay, but one of the least interesting disco classics. Dua Lipa, Angèle - Fever This is my first time listening to this. It’s nice but I feel like it’s generic when comparing it to the rest of FN. I feel like it’s on the same vein as the Demi song but people pretend it’s something great cause it has some french in it. Not bad though! Miley Cyrus - Breakout When this first started I thought I was listening to the Total Drama Island theme song The verses are fun but the chorus is honestly annoying. I kinda don’t love it, sorry :/ Charli XCX - forever This is soooooooo pretty. I love this and I’ll be saving this song <3 Ariana Grande - breathin Very very good song. I remember I got chills the first time I heard the beat drop on the second chorus. I do think that it has lost a bit of its magic but it’s still very good! David Archuleta - Just Breathe Yeah, I don’t get why people are hating on this. But honestly sending a male song that is not Tame Impala is kind of a death sentence. But this is not bad. The verses are interesting. The chorus is very lackluster and uninspired though Dua Lipa - Don’t Start Now You know you did that <3 Open Mike Eagle - Everything Ends Last Year Chloe x Halle - Lonely Love this song so much. It’s so smooth and has a lot of substance! I feel like it’s one of those songs I’m always going to be in the mood to listen to <3 Electric Youth - Innocence Love the instrumental and the vocal production on the chorus. However I find it a little off putring during the verses. This is a very strong track and stands its ground along with these entries. Madonna - Like A Virgin Uhhhhh, sadly same :( But I mean, this is fun and I can’t really complain! Twenty One Pilots - Stressed Out Well, this was way too overplayed. It’s not as annoying as it used to be and it’s not Ride, so you get some points for that!
Anthem Posted January 4, 2021 Posted January 4, 2021 (edited) TEAM A Spoiler "On Track" by Tame Impala // I know it's been a slow year, nothin' much to show here. First of all, it's always nice to see some representation and discussion for this group on here. This song really shines in it's trance-like melody, and much like 2020, it feels like time has sort of froze and everything is floating midair. The song works both sonically and lyrically with the theme, as lyrics like "I close my front door and turn on the light/I let out a breath and hold in a sigh" get partnered beautifully with some bittersweet piano rifts. Of course, the song loses that a bit when it starts talking about a specific person - but the mood remains the same regardless. Good pick! "bury a friend" by Billie Eilish // Today, I'm thinkin' about the things that are deadly I was not a big fan of this song was it was first released, but appreciated it once I listened to WWAFAWDG and began to understand Billie more as an artist. Lyrically, I suppose the song kind of fits in a morbid way if you take it in a literal since. Sonically though, the song fits very well and has an eerie undertone that reflects the uncertainness we all feel last year. "I Know Alone" by HAIM // Been a couple days since I've been out Yesss, these are my girls! WIM3 is one of my favourite albums this year, and "I Know Alone" is among the top tracks for me. This song evokes the exact feeling of what it was like being in lockdown, especially the lyrics pertaining to sleeping through the days and struggling with maintaining your happiness. Perfect choice for this round, I hope you get lots of high rankings! "Nothing' You Can Do About It" - The Manhattan Transfer // It's too strong to be denied Ouu, a more uptempo song. If you look at this song from the perspective of 2020, it actually works sort of perfectly. Think "Toxic Love" from Ferngully. It's like the year is trying to lull you into accepting the fate of how awful it is going to be, and that you might as well stop resisting the master plan. I don't know if that was your intention with this submission, but I love the concept anyway. "Quit or Run" - Startisan // It'd be easier to just succumb.. the race is on This gives such strong Christian-Rock vibes.. good thing I'm listening to it on a Sunday! It's an okay song, albeit extremely dated. I like the approach of using an encouraging song for this theme, because we all know how often we had to remind ourselves to keep pushing forward this year. It's not my favourite in the group. "Losing You" - Solange // I don't know why I fight it This is one of, if not my absolute, favourite Solange songs. Captivating, catchy, and deep rooted. It gets full points in terms of quality, but loses a bit when it comes to connecting with the theme. Although, on a personal level, this worked PERFECTLY for how my own 2020. Word for word. Good choice, hope you get some high rankings. "Friends In The Corner" - Foxes // I took it all for granted, I lived it like a dream Yup, this is another really solid choice thematically. I like that this songs pertains to how temporary everything can be, and how quickly we can lose things we unknowingly took for granted. That's definitely a lesson that 2020 taught us all. It's all a pretty infectious sound with a bursting chorus, but what else would we expect from Foxes? Perfect choice for this round. "cardigan" - Taylor Swift // A friend to all is a friend to none I'll judge this one based on it being released in 2020, and not representing the year. With that being said, this was a highlight for me last year. The entire folklore album got me through a lot, and even listening to this track now has memories flooding back. I think this song PERFECTLY reflects the best of the best for last year's releases. I can see you winning with this one, and deservingly so. "A World Alone" - Lorde // Raise a glass, 'cause I'm not done saying it Well, it's serviceable. It touches on the theme with it's existential crisis and holding onto that one person to help get through the chaos of the world. Sonically, I sort of zoned out halfway through and then realized the song was still going a minute later. That's a Lorde song for you though, lol. This is one of my least favourites in the group, sorry. "Solitaire" - MARINA // I see buildings and bars from the window I think this song really suits the overall vibe for 2020, at least for those of us who lived in a country that had mandatory lockdowns. It's such a somber track sonically, and I like that the lyrics touch on embracing isolation. I have a feeling this song won't do especially well since it feels like ATRL has given up on post-EH Marina, but it deserves a high ranking. "I Get Lonely" - Janet Jackson // Sittin' here with my tears, all alone with my fears This is some of Janet's best work right here. It only works with the theme in the most face value way, mainly the title of the track, but who cares when the song serves TOP QUALITY? Probably going to win this round, and I'm not mad about it. "Nobody" - Mitski // My God, I'm so lonely... Lyrics definitely work with this theme. I like the vulnerability shown here; and the way everything builds up in the end is absolutely incredible and next level. Reminds me of getting drunk while home alone during lockdown, and just submitting to the disco blaring through my Bose speakers. If I was in this group, you would be my top track. "These Four Walls" - Little Mix // I tried to smile today, then I realized there's no point anyway This song works for me on both a generalized and personal look at 2020. It's a bit of an all encompassing choice, which is fantastic! Beautifully bitter production, and the girls sound so desperate to regain the love they once had. Very good choice for this round, hope you get a lot of high rankings. "BETTER" - TWICE // Ooh-la-la-la, ooh-la-la-la-la Like Cardigan, I'll be rating this based on 2020 releases. Unfortunately, I don't listen to a ton of kpop so I don't have a lot of basis for the impact this song may have had. Dua's "I Can't Stop Me" may have been a better choice though, as I think I prefer that song more. "Cry About It Later" - Katy Perry // Champagne on ice only makes you stronger This feels like an anthem about breaking restrictions, and going out partying. “I’ll cough about it later.” But anyway, Smile was a pretty underrated album this year and CAIL seems to be a unanimous highlight track around here - rightfully so! It has the Katy patented infectious chorus, and brings some life to all the melancholy songs in this group. Good choice, and I hope it gets the appreciation it deserves. "Celebrate You" - Kylie Minogue // Everything I like about myself is better with you Well, it’s not as good as Corbin’s Celebrate You, as found at the top of every playlist at Disney World. But it’s still really good, and has a sort of “everything will be okay” vibe to it - which is perfect for this theme! DISCO was a wonderful bow on 2020's Pop Releases, so it’s nice to see it represented this round. Very nice pick. "STAR" - Loona // I’m seeing star lights, star lights; us against the sunrise It’s cute. The second best kpop song in this group. As mentioned in BETTER’s critique, I don’t have enough 2020 kpop knowledge or history to feel any specific way in terms of relating it to the theme. Unfortunately, this song feels a little more generic than BETTER, so I’d rank it lower than them. TEAM B Spoiler "I Know The End" by Phoebe Bridgers // Romanticize a quiet life; there's no place like my room She sorta sounds like Alec Benjamin, doesn’t she? Anyway, this song does a good job evoking the sense of loneliness that many of us experienced last year. It goes through a whole year’s worth of emotions, while ultimately coming back to the overarching acceptance of fate. I REALLY liked the finale of this song. Don’t know much about Miss. Bridgers, but this makes me want to listen to some more of her work. "I Wanna Go" by Britney Spears // Lately I've been stuck imagining what I wanna do Another really solid entry! I have so much pent up energy in me from being locked up all year, and I just wanna gooooo. Shame on me to need release, I guess. It’s a really fun pop song, with an infectious chorus and a thumping bass. Femme Fatale really was that era, huh? This ticks all the boxes here - theme, production, and overall quality. "Ok Not To Be Ok" by Marshmello and Demi Lovato // Don't get lost in the moment I’m not sure why everyone is hating on this song so much. It’s serviceable, I think. Bit on the nose but.. it’s a Demi song. I think this entry works both thematically and for the Best of 2020, although I’ll lean more into the former for my ranking consideration in this case. "Together Again" by Janet Jackson // Dancin' in moonlight, I know you are free That was a classic.. that was a classic. What I like about this choice with Janet, aside from the obvious connotation with the title, is the background of the song’s development. Janet wrote this in honor of a friend she lost during the AIDs pandemic, which unfortunately makes it very relatable again with today’s situation. Brilliant choice. "WTF Do I Know" by Miley Cyrus // Maybe getting married just to cause a distraction Unfortunately, Plastic Hearts didn’t really hit a cord with me. WDIK was one of the better tracks though, so you have that going for me. I do like the sense of taking power back, but it feels a little TOO aggressive for me. I’m just not a rock girl. Sorry! "Stayin Alive" by Bee Gees // I'll live to see another day Aww, this is a really cute pick! I love an uptempo throwback. I doesn’t exactly fit the theme, but I understand what you were going for with this choice. I’ll give you full credit. "Fever" by Dua Lipa, Angéle // Hand on my forehead, kiss my neck Of all the Dua songs you could have picked.. This doesn’t do it for me at all. FN shines with it’s standard edition, not b-sides or international tracks. This song is boring in both production and delivery. "Breakout" by Miley Cyrus // We're gonna dance till the dance floor falls apart dd, this is such a random pick. It’s an absolute BANGER, though! I use to sing this song to myself all the time while walking home from school. Reminds me of better times. Of course, it also works with the theme, as I’m sure we are all itching to finally break free of COVID restrictions and have some fun again. Cute pick, and definitely the better Miley song in this group. "forever" by Charli XCX // *ear-piercing static* What is this noise? I hate it. "breathin" by Ariana Grande // Time goes by and I can't control my mind This is still one of Ariana’s best songs for me. Which.. isn’t saying a whole lot, but still. I think it suits the theme really well. Not just because of the whole covid/breathing thing, but also because the song is all about dealing with anxiety and stress. I think we have all had a moment this year (I’ve had many!) where we had to remind ourselves that it will be okay, and to just push forward. Cute choice! "Just Breathe" by David Archuleta // Took a little time to find a piece of me Another song about breathing, dd. I guess it has the same appeal as the Ariana song in respect to dealing with anxiety and stress. It works well with the theme, and David has a very soothing voice to me. It’s not as good as Breathin’ though, sorry! "Don't Start Now" by Dua Lipa // Don't show up. Don't come out. Oh, thank goodness. Dua getting her redemption after being done dirty earlier in the group. This was THE song of 2020, and defined the entire music scene last year. This is a modern disco done right - infectious beats, chantable hooks, lusty chorus. There’s a reason this song served longevity, and that’s because of QUALITY. "Everything Ends Last Year" by Open Mike Eagle // It ****ing ended, just like that Oh wow, this works really well. This reminds me of how positive everyone felt moving into the new decade, and the sudden decline that occurred around March. “It’s October, and I’m tired” - bitch, me too! This has been such a long year of trying to do our best with what little we can. I appreciate that the production, albeit simple, follows the peaks and valleys of emotions in the lyrics. That soft little rising cord in the background sounds so hopefully, then it’s just suddenly gone. Beautiful. "Lonely" by Chloe x Halle // Who are you when no one's watching? This is a really comforting song. It’s like a friend is letting me know they got me, and I’ll be okay. This song works well for both sides of the theme: it speaks about being alone, and it’s some of the best from 2020. Yup, yup. Whoever sent this really did that! "Innocence" by Electric Youth // The teacher starts to learn, the child starts to grow I enjoyed this song. Another side of 2020 that wasn’t touched on too much in these songs are the time we had to be introspective. I feel like this song does a good job showcasing the power of inner-growth. It also a very relaxing vibe. It brings me zen, yes it brings me zen. "Like a Virgin" by Madonna // Touched for the very first time LOL. Yeah, I certainly feel like a born again virgin after this past year. This is such a classic, and a really creative pick for this round. I’ll be giving you some bonus points for providing a take on the theme that no one else had. "Stressed Out" by Twenty One Pilots // Wish we could turn back time to the good ole days Oh wow, I haven’t heard this song in a while. I use to be obsessed with it, but hearing it now that I’m older hits a different cord. It works wonderfully for the theme - the production and lyrics both share a bluntness to them that reflects the realities of being adult. This has been a stressful year, and stuff like work and childhood dreams being stomped on became oh too real for many of us. This was a really solid choice, and I hope these faguettes don’t do it dirty. Note: I'll only be sending rankings for Group B. Edited January 4, 2021 by Anthem

KevinDG Posted January 4, 2021 Posted January 4, 2021 Phoebe Bridgers - I Know The End Not my kind of music. It gets better in the end though. Britney Spears - I Wanna Go Fun bop from the legendary Ms. Spears. Marshmello and Demi Lovato - Ok Not To Be Ok I think I'm one of the few people on ATRL that likes Demi and this song is not different. Like this a lot! Janet Jackson - Together Again Fun 90's bop but it sounded better in my memory. Miley Cyrus - WTF Do I Know My fave song on my favorite album of 2020. I don't see how it fits the theme but maybe it's something more personal then the pandemic. Bee Gees - Stayin Alive Absolute classic but didn't hear it for a long time. Catchy song. But like more old songs this goes on a bit too much. Dua Lipa, Angéle - Fever Another top 10 song in my 2020 list. LOVE it! Miley Cyrus - Breakout This didn't age well. Charli XCX - forever When this was released I just didn't like how overproduced this sounded but I grew to like it. Ariana Grande - breathin Back when Ariana was making top notch pop songs. Oh what a time. Hopefully her 'slow r&b-album phase' won't last too long. David Archuleta - Just Breathe Never heard this before and when it started I thought I'd really like it but it was just boring and monotone. Dua Lipa - Don’t Start Now Instant classic! It started one of the best MPG eras of the last years. Open Mike Eagle - Everything Ends Last Year This will be my last place, what is this mess?? The only song so far I couldn't listen to the end. Chloe x Halle - Lonely These girls surprised me with their album in 2020. This is also a bop. Electric Youth - Innocence Don't like this. Too monotone and dreamy. Madonna - Like a Virgin Save the best classic for last. Twenty One Pilots - Stressed Out I totally forgot about this song but hearing it back, I still like it.

K$Ellie Posted January 4, 2021 Posted January 4, 2021 Tame Impala - On Track: kinda cute one probs one of my least faves on the album, middle of the road this round Billie Eilish - bury a friend: not only is it an 11/10 song but fits the theme the best out of these x HAIM - I Know Alone: love this and it fits the theme x The Manhattan Transfer - Nothin' You Can Do About It: c'mon now what year are we in x Startisan - Quit or Run: c'mon now what year are we in x [2] if you're doing pop-rock then it's beabadoobee or nothing Solange - Losing You: very cute I think maybe if her albums had more bops like this Foxes - Friends in the Corner: as someone said, it sounds very sterile? her new music isn't doing it for me Taylor Swift - Cardigan: cheap point grab x Lorde - A World Alone: this kinda fits perfectly huh I think it's winning and I won't try to stop it x Marina - Solitaire: always liked this, although the intro is far better than the rest oddly enough Janet Jackson - I Get Lonely: never heard this before but it's great! Mitski - Nobody: great and fits the theme but my god is it overrated and overused x Little Mix - These Four Walls: used to like this a lot back in the day probs their best ballad TWICE - Better: not one of my faves from them but it's cute [2], also kpop so i'm inflating the ranking x Katy Perry - Cry About It Later: solid entry, middle of the road Kylie Minogue - Celebrate You: very cheesy and one of my least faves on the album LOONA - Star: best song of all time
ATRL Moderator Legend E Posted January 4, 2021 ATRL Moderator Posted January 4, 2021 I realized my dumbass forgot to send the rankings will do it tonight x
Fruity Posted January 4, 2021 Posted January 4, 2021 Tame Impala - On Track: pretty middle of the road kevin track but its nice Billie Eilish - bury a friend: classic billiie, not ******* over this but its nice [2] HAIM - I Know Alone: its quite cute yes The Manhattan Transfer - Nothin' You Can Do About It: definitely perplexing! Startisan - Quit or Run: unremarkable and barely even pretty Solange - Losing You: very very lovely and interesting yes this should've made more waves back in the day Foxes - Friends in the Corner: its nice Taylor Swift - Cardigan: it's a song from folklore Lorde - A World Alone: it's the serve Marina - Solitaire: it's a HARD no Janet Jackson - I Get Lonely: not one of my favourites from the album but it's definitely good so well done Mitski - Nobody: fine. and yes its an overdone choice Little Mix - These Four Walls: complete drivel TWICE - Better: fine to cute. definitely verges on cheap sounding but ill give them a pass Katy Perry - Cry About It Later: this was cute for about 10 plays. after a couple days you realise its crap Kylie Minogue - Celebrate You: asian dance LOONA - Star: my most played song of 2021 YUP! does it fit the theme? perhaps not but you served anyway
miguel Posted January 4, 2021 Posted January 4, 2021 On Track it's cute, far from Tame's best, it's honestly a tad too long for its own good, but I don't actively dislike it either bury a friend you're going to HELL for this. issa bop tho! I Know Alone very cute, i dig it Nothin' You Can Do About It i liked this, then i didn't, then i was digging it again, then it going annoying. will probably fall somewhere in the middle for me tbh. Quit Or Run nnnn i highkey love this Losing You this is extremely boring, sorry Friends In The Corner it's alright, i use cardigan song of the decade, i fear A World Alone absolutely Solitaire eh, Marina is very hit or miss, and this is indeed a miss I Get Lonely tanking for the auburn pandering Nobody Pretty sure this got sent three seasons ago already (not your fault thought, it's not in the banned songs list for some reason) Anyway, it was a no then, and it's a no now. Awful awful song. These Four Walls gorgeous sing BETTER eh Cry About It Later aged Celebrate You it's no "Real Groove", that's for sure Star i was really digging the production and melody in the verses, but that chorus was SO disappointing. cute enough tho
