rl231 Posted June 13, 2020 Author Posted June 13, 2020 Contestants Song Adr The Beach Boys - Long Promised Road DripDrip Florence + the Machine - Shake It Out EriKills Awon - It Could Be Worse Gateau Aurora - Lucky Golden Madonna - Has to Be kiiwii Mariah Carey - Make It Happen Marvin Reba McEntire - I'm A Survivor Reba McEntire - I'm A Survivor Astro - 9.5 - It’s pretty perfect for this theme, no doubting that. Definitely reminds me of the TV show and forever will tho nnnn Clue - 9.5 - What was asked for is totally there in the chorus. Good job. That one line about her being the “queen of broken hearts” really, really sold the part about the narrator embracing the bad things in their lives. Dylan - 10 - Iconic song from the best show of all time. Supaspaz - 10 - This reminds me of WB Friday nights when I was in middle school. We deserved more than one season of “Maybe It’s Me”! Psycho - 9.5 - Pretty much checks all the boxes for the theme Mariah Carey - Make It Happen Astro - 7.5 - I’d be more inclined to give you a higher score had it been more oriented about the bad she’d been through, but this is more of a song that’s like, okay it’s all over. Clue - 7.5 - This sounds more like she was ONCE down and out, but she’s since found faith in God and herself to build a better life for herself. I wish she hadn’t completely left all of the bad in the past, so the part about her living a life of struggle was more at the forefront. It doesn’t come together perfectly for me. Dylan - 6 - This has too much bloom and not enough gloom. It works but there’s much stronger submissions. Supaspaz - 6.5 - This is a blissful anthem, because Mariah already made it through the rain. Psycho - 7.5 - I agree that there isn’t enough about suffering, and it’s more of a religious bop more so than what was needed for the theme. Madonna - Has to Be Astro - 8 - It’s okay. I see the point you were trying to make clearly, but I feel like it could’ve been a bit better. Clue - 9 - This is almost completely perfect, but I wish she wasn’t talking about finding someone. I also wish that she’d gone into specifics about just how the “gods above” were so unkind. Dylan - 8 - Hits the mark and it’s a nice song! Supaspaz - 9 - So sparse and striking. Is there any more relatable experience of life beating you down than heartbreak? Psycho - 7.5 - It’s missing something for me Aurora - Lucky Astro - 7.5 - It feels very vaguely in medias res, like we’re kind of arriving late to the narrative, but she isn’t doing anything to elaborate. It does attempt to be what we’re looking for, but I think it could’ve been a bit less vague. Clue - 7.5 - The ~lucky to be alive~ part is there, but I needed more details about what kind of bad things were happening to her, it felt a little vague. Dylan - 8 - This one’s lyrics aren’t that strong but I think the emotion and production of the song help elevate the song. Supaspaz - 8 - More evocative than direct, but it captures the mood of this week’s theme. Psycho - 8.5 - It’s a pretty close match since it has the life beating them down part and the part about at least being alive Awon - It Could Be Worse Astro - 9 - I get what you’re going for choosing this entry, and I think this is definitely on the upside of what some of the entries have been thus far. I think it could’ve been maybe a tad bit more expanded on, but it’s pretty on the nose. Clue - 9.5 - This is pretty much what was asked of y’all. It would be better without mentioning so many hypotheticals, though. I understand that it adds to the ~things could be worse~ part, but it took away from the message for me, rather than adding to it. Dylan - 7 - You quite literally capture the “it could be worse” part of this round well but besides that, this doesn’t do much to help you out lyrically. Supaspaz - 7 - He’s certainly embraced his lot in life, but it’s not clear why he was so down in the first place. He spends a whole lot of time talking about how things are so bad in this world without ever really letting us in on his own struggles. Psycho - 8.5 - A closer match to the theme than some others I’ve heard so far Florence + the Machine - Shake It Out Astro - 5 - I’m not really feeling this for the theme. I could possibly try to look into maybe seeing it that way, but it feels very very forced. Clue - 5 - This missed the mark for me. It sounded to me like this is more of a song about not having regrets. Dylan - 6.5 - I can see why you sent this because it has the cleansing element that Rain On Me also has. But this song has been submitted a lot of times on Survivor and it always fares about the same as right now because it has so many different elements going on. Supaspaz - 4 - Excellent song, huge miss. This is a cry of catharsis as you bury your regrets and leave the past behind. Psycho - 6 - It appeared to meet the theme but the judges pointing out how the song is about shaking off regrets made it less good for the theme. Classic tho The Beach Boys - Long Promised Road Astro - 9 - It’s just a bit vague lyrically in the verses, but I do think the chorus is pretty on the nose. I do really like it though. Clue - 10 - He mentions that it is hard to struggle and go through the tears, but he eventually realizes that the fight will be worth it. Yup. Dylan - 8.5 - It fits well lyrically despite being the worst song I’ve ever heard. Supaspaz - 9 - It’s all a bit vague what he’s singing about (what shackles are binding him down?), but the theme is certainly on point. Psycho - 7.5 - It has the part about bad things in life and embracing them but it missing some things for me like "acknowledging that it could, in fact, be worse" Archon, you're up next!
ATRL Moderator Azulito Posted June 13, 2020 ATRL Moderator Posted June 13, 2020 Oh wow I was not expecting that. I was really nervous about my entry but I’m glad the judges liked it Go Adrestia
rl231 Posted June 13, 2020 Author Posted June 13, 2020 Contestants Song Buddy! Katy Perry - Rise kipperskipper Sia - Alive Not Like the Movies Miley Cyrus - The Climb prézli Anastacia - Boxer Tom Vercetti Gizzle - It's Not Over (feat. Sam Fischer) Touch It Demi Lovato - Skyscraper URBAN Monica - Still Standing Monica - Still Standing Astro - 8.5 - I do actually like the verses quite a bit, I think she’s really hitting the theme on part there, but my biggest issue would be I’m not seeing things being worse. It’s very focused on it is what it is. Clue - 8.5 - Almost perfect. I love how detailed she is in the verses. But she doesn’t say anything about how things could be worse. Dylan - 8 - The chorus of this song fits the title well and the verses help bring it home. Supaspaz - 7.5 - She’s, she’s, she’s, she’s steel here, here, here, here. Psycho - 6.5 - Very vague and cliche lyrics, doesn’t hit the mark for me Demi Lovato - Skyscraper Astro - 6.5 - It’s nice of her to accept that the bad is what it is, but like, she’s not saying anything about how this situation could be worse for her. It’s too focused on what’s already happened and what is happening. It doesn’t really do it for me. Clue - 7 - I like that she tells them to destroy her, but she says that she’ll still be standing. So the part about embracing the bad things is there. But there’s no mention of how things could be worse and she doesn’t really talk about there being a light at the end of the tunnel. Dylan - 7 - Some of the songs this round have more sadness than triumph and some have the opposite problem. This is okay but there’s a bit of an imbalance. Supaspaz - 7 - Like a lot of submissions this round, this one seems to lean a bit too much into the triumph rather than the suffering. Psycho - 6 - This one comes across as more about dragging a bully and rising above them. It misses the mark for me Gizzle - It's Not Over (feat. Sam Fischer) Astro - 9.5 - It’s a very going forward-based song where they acknowledge what’s happened, what’s going to come, and they tackle just about every aspect. Clue - 10 - Perfect. There’s an overarching theme about how he’s a better person/how he’s found himself after going through the bad times. Dylan - 9 - This reminds me of “Still Standing” but a little stronger because of the religious elements. Not questioning God’s will and what not. Supaspaz - 8 - Even though she sees a path to salvation, she still seems to be battling her way through new challenges. Psycho - 9 - Good entry, the lyric “And yes I've been through hell But on the other side is where I found myself and it's not, it's not over” is pretty much the theme. Anastacia - Boxer Astro - 7 - It’s… Fine, I guess. I can see what you were going for, but this is not that good of an entry. It’s executed pretty badly and the lyrics are a little basic as hell, but again, I see what you’re aiming for. Clue - 9.5 - This is good. She says not to let her out of the ring, she wants to fight through the hard times to continue to see the light. Dylan - 7 - I was thinking “roll with the punches” the entire time because of the title. But it’s more about fighting your own battles than that in the end. Either way, not the best or the worst this round. Supaspaz - 6.5 - There’s a kernel of the theme in her refrain that “beauty lies in every scar,” but this more about being a fighter. Psycho - 7 - It has most of the elements of the theme but it’s execution is a bit messy Miley Cyrus - The Climb Astro - 7 - While I do like this song and think it’s a decent entry for this round, I do have a few minor issues with it. I think she could’ve been more direct instead of being vague. The chorus is great because it falls in line with the theme, but I think the verses could use some work. Clue - 8 - The part about fighting to get to the other side is there, but I’m missing the struggle. She mentions struggles, but I wish she went more into detail. Dylan - 6 - Hmm. In general, the song’s more about reaching your dreams than the ups and downs. But, she acknowledges how her journey will have highs and lows so it’s not a total miss for me either? Supaspaz - 3 - This is a cheesy inspirational ballad about reaching for your dreams. Where is life knocking Miley down? Psycho - 8 - The chorus is great for the theme Sia - Alive Astro - 10 - I think this is an excellent entry, it really captures the theme perfectly, and her vocals in the bridge kinda stress the struggle because of how much she’s straining, imo. Clue - 9.5 - God, her music is horrible. But this works almost perfectly. Dylan - 10 - Yup yup yup. Supaspaz - 9 - I love how weighted with meaning the phrase “I’m still breathing” becomes. Sia simultaneously makes it sound like such a simple thing and also the biggest personal victory she could possibly imagine. Psycho - 10 - This was the song I thought of when I saw the theme, excellent! Katy Perry - Rise Astro - 5 - While, in theory, this could work well for this theme, it doesn’t really do much with the theme. Sure, it’s uplifting, but it’s very vague and focuses solely on getting past right now. There’s no what she went through and where she’s going except for “I will still rise.” Clue - 5 - This was a bit too ethereal for me. I wish we don’t hear about any specific bad things that are happening, and there’s no point in the song where she mentions anything about fighting to get to better times. Dylan - 5 - This is in the very very very general realm of the round but there’s pretty much nothing that elevates it whatsoever. Supaspaz - 5 - “By the Grace of God” would have been a much better choice. Psycho - 6 - There’s not much “thank god I’m alive” or “things could be worse” in this song, it’s basically just a self-empowerment anthem Nomadis, you're the last one!
