21. Lukasz Gottwald (Dr. Luke)

Points: 33,698

dr-luke.jpg

Producer and songwriter Dr Luke got into music through guitar playing and began playing guitar in SNL's band in 1997 and began working as a DJ and as a producer and remixer, mainly for hip hop groups. His mainstream success began after meeting Max Martin and being brought on to co-write and co-produce Kelly Clarkson's hits "Since U Been Gone" and "Behind These Hazel Eyes" in 2004. Those were Max Martin's first smash hits that took him out of a four year slump, and he continued to work with Dr Luke on most of his big projects for the next few years. In 2006, he worked on P!nk's "Who Knew" and "U + Ur Hand", and in 2007, he worked on half the songs from Avril Lavigne's "The Best Damn Thing" including her big pop hit "Girlfriend". He had another big career moment by contributing to launching Katy Perry's career by working on her first two hits "I Kissed A Girl" and "Hot N Cold" in 2008. By the end of the decade, he had worked on major hits with many of the biggest established and up-and-coming pop stars, including Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, Flo Rida and Kesha.

That success continued into the early 2010s, as he worked on most of Katy Perry's big "Teenage Dream" and "Prism" singles (except "Firework"), as well as Kesha's career peak with her albums "Animal", "Cannibal" and "Warrior". He also worked on hits by Taio Cruz, Jessie J, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, T.I., B.o.B., Pitbull and Maroon 5, making him a major contributor to the boom in upbeat pop music experienced during the late 00s and early 10s. During his career peak, he branched out from working with Max Martin to working with other producer-songwriters, including Benny Blanco beginning in 2008, and Cirkut beginning in 2011. In October, 2014, Kesha sued Dr. Luke for various kinds of abusive behaviour, including sexual abuse, which lead to the artists he had been collaborating with to stop working with him and his streak of hits to come to an abrupt end.

Wow, so who did he leap on?

As much as his character is allegedly bad, his work on the pop landscape is amazing.

23. Gordon Sumner (Sting)

Points: 33,673

Sting-april-2017-a-london-billboard-1548

After learning to play guitar, Sting began playing in a jazz band as a young adult. A few years later, he moved to London and formed The Police in 1977. They had their first hit with "Roxanne" (#32 in 1979) from their debut album, "Outlandos D'Amour". Their sound was initially more punk influenced but gradually became more reggae-rock and pop leaning and the band has several hits in the next few years including "Message In A Bottle" and "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic". They released their fifth and final album, "Synchronicity" in 1983, which contained several hits including the #1 smash "Every Breath You Take" which has now become the most played song of all time on radio.

In 1985, he released his solo debut album, "The Dream of The Blue Turtles", which included #3 hit "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free". That same year, he also contributed backing vocals and wrote a line ("I Want My MTV") for Dire Straits' #1 hit "Money For Nothing". He released a couple more successful albums in the late 80s and early 90s, which included hits like "Shape of My Heart" and "Englishman in New York". In 1997, "I'll Be Missing You" was released in tribute to Biggie Smalls by his wife Faith Evans and Puff Daddy. The song heavily samples "Every Breath You Take" which lead to Sting suing and being granted 100% of royalties. Sting got his last major hit as a performer with "Desert Rose" in 2000, which has Arabic influences and features Algerian singer Cheb Mami. In 2007, after a more than two decade long break, he re-united with The Police for a huge international reunion tour. His last songwriter appearance on the charts was in 2018 with Juice WRLD's sample of "Shape of My Heart" on his smash hit "Lucid Dreams".

Why does Sting have a 100% on I’ll Be Missing You?

The extent to which Every Breath You Take was sampled/interpolated was so significant it's practically a remix and it sounds like they didn't ask for permission so I guess that's why he was able to sue them for 100%.

22. Elton John

Points: 33,694

elton-john-9355335-2-402.jpg

With eight #1 songwriter hits spanning three decades, Elton John is one of the top selling artists of all time. He got into music playing piano and listening to his parents' rock n roll records. As a teenager, he played piano in pubs and bars, and as part of backing bands for the tours of various R&B and soul singers. In 1967, he met lifelong songwriting partner Bernie Taupin. The majority of the time, they write without any back and forth interaction - Bernie Taupin would write a set of lyrics, hand them over to Elton John, and Elton would see if it inspired him to compose anything worthwhile. Their early work for DJM Records writing songs for other artists experienced limited commercial success, it wasn't until the start of Elton John's solo career in 1970 that the hits started rolling in, starting with a minor hit with "Border Song", and then greater success with "Your Song", "Rocket Man", "Tiny Dancer" and "Crocodile Rock" in the early 70s. Soon after, in 1973, he released his most successful album "Yellow Brick Road".

Although Bernie Taupin co-wrote all of Elton John's #1 hits, he still had other significant hits with other co-writers, including "Little Jeanie" and "Blue Eyes" with Gary Osborne, and the most popular songs from the soundtrack of 1994's "The Lion King" - "Circle of Live", "I Just Can't Wait To Be King", "Hakuna Matata" and "Can You Feel The Love Tonight", all co-written with Tim Rice. He wrote music for several other musicals including Billy Elliott (2005), Aida (1998), The Devil Wears Prada (2017) and Friends (1971). In 1997, he re-wrote "Candle In The Wind" to be dedicated to Princess Diana, and it became the top selling single of all time. In addition to his theater work, the later stages of his career included co-writing "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'" with the Scissor Sisters in 2006, and embarking on a three year farewell tour in 2018.

Thanks, the database I'm using is really reliable for older songs but a bit less for new songs (especially smaller hits) so I sometimes miss one or two when I cross-check (I had Locked Away and She Knows in my spreadsheet though). Anyways, that bumps him 4 points ahead of Elton John.

20. Paul Simon

Points: 35,183

17786?crop=16_9&width=660&relax=1&signat

Singer-songwriter Paul Simon's music career began in middle school singing with classmate Art Garfunkel. When he was 16, they released Paul Simon's first songwriter hit, "Hey, Schoolgirl" (#54 in 1958). He got involved in various projects with a couple minor hits in the years that followed. Then in 1964, Clive Davis signed the duo to Columbia and they released their debut album, "Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.". The album initially flopped but after getting radio requests for "Sounds of Silence", his producer replaced the song's folksy production with rock production and the single soon hit #1. Simon & Garfunkel released several more albums in 1966-1970 to build on that early success, with hits such as "The Boxer", "Cecilia" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water", and also contributed to "The Graduate"'s soundtrack in 1967, including #1 hit "Mrs. Robinson".

Paul Simon launched his solo career 1971 with the release of his self-titled debut, which incorporated a wide variety of musical influences such as with the pop-reggae hit "Mother and Child Reunion". He released several more successful solo albums in the 70s and 80s, including his most successful album, "Graceland", in 1986, where he continued to explore his interests in world music, frequently drawing on South African music, and which includes the hit "You Can Call Me Al". "Graceland" also earned him his third Grammy Album of the Year win, making him the only artist alongside Frank Sinatra and Stevie Wonder to win the award three times, and adding to his previous wins for Simon & Garfunkel's 1970 "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and his 1976 album "Still Crazy After All These Years". His most recent chart entries as a songwriter have been with Missy Elliott's sample of "Take Me To The Mardis Gras" on "Work It" and with Disturbed's cover of "Sounds of Silence".

19. Burt Bacharach

Points: 35,778

burt_bacharach_-_2010_visionary_ball_-_g

Songwriter and producer Burt Bacharach was one of the most successful pop hit-makers of the early Hot 100 days. His start in music began with an appreciation for jazz music and he became a classically trained pianist, and began performing as a musician for singers in resorts in New York State's Catskill Mountains. He then worked as a conductor, arranger and music director for popular singer Marlene Dietrich. He then met lyricist Hal David and began writing hits with him for artists such as Perry Como, Gene Pitney and Bobby Vinton. In 1962, they wrote "Don't Make Me Over", their first hit for Dionne Warwick, and would go on to write three dozen Hot 100 hits for her, mostly in the mid to late 60s. He began a career as a recording artist in 1965, with many of the songs being his own recordings of songs he had previously written for other artists, but only experienced moderate commercial success.

In 1967, he composed and arranged the soundtrack for  "Casino Royale", and worked on the musical "Promises, Promises" the year after. His professional relationship with Hal David came to an end after the failure of the 1973 musical remake of 1937 film "Lost Horizon". Although he experienced his greatest success with Hal David, he was still able to get hits without him, both before their peak together ("Tower of Strength", "Baby It's You") and after ("Arthur's Theme", "That's What Friends Are For", "Any Day Now", "Heartlight", "On My Own"). The vast majority of those later hits were written by lyricist Carole Bayer Sager, who he married in 1982, and wrote songs extensively with during the 1980s. His jazz and classical background has helped him create a distinctive style of pop music that has pleasant sounding melodies and arrangements but still quite complex with frequent changes in chord progressions, metre and tonality. His music had a significant influence on more recent genres of music such as chamber pop and Shibuya-kei.
