Ash12345 Posted January 15, 2020 Author Posted January 15, 2020 I've been double-checking songwriters points a few ranks ahead of reveals, but this one turned out to have extra co-writers (often due to samples) on several of his songs. I initially had him ahead of Sam Cooke but after double checking he fell back to #51.

Ash12345 Posted January 15, 2020 Author Posted January 15, 2020 51. Jermaine Dupri Points: 25,428 Songwriter and producer Jermaine Dupri was a major force in R&B and hip hop in the 90s to mid 00s, helping break many of the era's popular artists and working on many of its biggest cross-over smash hits. He started getting into hip-hop in the 1980s and joined a dance group when he was twelve. The son of a Columbia executive, he started making music as a songwriter and producer for female hip hop group Silk Tymes Leather, who had a minor R&B hit with "New Jack Thang" in 1990. However, his first real success came when he discovered Kris Kross at a local mall, and produced their debut album, which had several hits in 1992-1993, including #1 hit "Jump". He then founded his own label and launched several more (mostly female) hip-hop and R&B acts, such as Xscape and Da Brat. That lead to him working with Mariah Carey, who was looking to go in a more R&B/hip-hop direction with "Daydream" and they wrote the 1995 smash hit "Always Be My Baby". After co-writing "Not Tonight", the biggest hit from Lil' Kim's debut album, Jermaine Dupri helped turn Usher into a superstar by writing and producing on most of his sophomore album, "My Way", including its three smash singles. That same year, he also worked on Jagged Edge's debut album, after Kandi Burruss of Xscape brought the group to his attention. In 1998, he discovered songwriter Bryan-Michael Cox, and teamed up with him to write and produce Lil' Bow Wow's first two albums. His last major success came in the mid 00s when he worked on several hits from two of the biggest R&B albums of all time, Mariah Carey's "Emancipation of Mimi", and Usher's "Confessions". Richard Marx Points: 26,662 Richard Marx's start in music was singing commercial jingles for his father's company when he was a boy. He was then discovered by Lionel Richie who encouraged him to move to LA where he sang backing vocals for other artists. While singing for Kenny Rogers in 1984, Richard Marx gave him a couple demos and those became his first songwriter hits - "Crazy" and "What About Me?". That lead to writing with David Foster, and then getting a record deal and releasing his self-titled debut album in 1987. The album had a #1, #2 and two #3 hits, and he had several more hits with follow up projects until the mid 90s. He wrote songs for other artists, throughout his career, including his last few major hits, which were with artists like NSYNC, Keith Urban and Luther Vandross in the 00s and 10s. That list is old and outdated because the source I was using was mostly Spotify/Wikipedia and the credits on ASCAP/BMI are often a bit different, so I still need to update the top 30. You can submit bios for the songwriters though, that would help speed things up. I'm usually aiming for 1-2 quick paragraphs per songwriter. Edited January 16, 2020 by Ash12345

Ash12345 Posted January 16, 2020 Author Posted January 16, 2020 #44 is one of the most sampled songwriters of all time, although with a lot of the samples of his music he wasn't credited as a songwriter.
Ash12345 Posted January 17, 2020 Author Posted January 17, 2020 (edited) 44. James Brown Points: 26,827 Nicknamed the God-father of Soul, and Hardest Working Man In Show Business, James Brown was a key figure in popularizing soul music among the mainstream in the late 50s to mid 60s. Growing up in poverty during the Great Depression, he learned to sing, play piano, guitar and harmonica. During WWII, he danced for spare change for soldiers stationed at the local army base. While in juvenile detention for robbery, James Brown met Bobby Byrd and after being released, he eventually began performing as a member of his R&B group "The Famous Flames", where he alternated between singing and playing various instruments. James Brown soon took over the management of the group, and began getting more involved in production, and got his first hit with "Try Me" in 1958 under "James Brown and The Famous Flames". As the 60s progressed, he became famous for his energetic performances and toured relentlessly, while still finding time to make music. During this time, he also began developing his own unique groove, which was eventually described as funk music. He also began singing with a greater emphasis on rhythm than melody, an approach that would late influence hip hop and rap music and he also emphasized rhythm with his guitar work. With the rise of hip-hop music, James Brown became the most sampled artist of all time, often without getting formally credited on the songs. James Brown's performance style and music influenced many successful acts such as Sly & The Family Stone, Michael Jackson, Prince and M.C. Hammer. Ash12345 Posted January 17, 2020 Author Posted January 17, 2020 Alicia Keys' "Fallin" samples "It's A Man's Man's Man's World" pretty noticeably btw, but James Brown doesn't get songwriting credits on it. Not sure how come so many of his samples didn't lead to him getting a songwriting credit.
