Barry Mann Points: 26,403 Although primarily known for his songwriting with his wife, Cynthia Weil, Barry Mann still had several hits before he began writing with her, such as his first hit, "She Say" by The Diamonds (#18 in 1959), "Footsteps" by Steve Lawrence (#7 in 1960), "I Love How You Love Me" by the Paris Sisters (#5 in 1961) and his biggest hit as a recording artist, "Who Put The Bomb" (#7 in 1961) which was a parody of the Doo Wop songs with nonsensical lyrics that were popular at the time. He also had a few hits without her later in his career, such as "Sometimes When We Touch" by Dan Hill (#3 in 1977) and the solo-written hit "There's No Easy Way" by James Ingram (#58 in 1984). Rob Thomas Points: 25,776 Rob Thomas had a difficult upbringing, and was drawn to country singers like Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash who also had hard lives, and started writing songs and playing music in his early teens. After a stint in jail and some time homeless, he tried to earn a living playing in cover bands. He then formed the band that (after a line-up change) would eventually become Matchbox Twenty in 1993, and started playing songs his own songs. The band gained the attention of producer Matt Serletic and they released their debut album in 1996. The album initially struggled and the band almost got dropped by their label until they noticed radio stations in Birmingham really liked "Push" so the label began promoting it and it became a rock/alternative/pop cross-over radio hit, peaking at #5 on radio songs with 52 weeks on the chart. Push got pushed next and was even more successful, however, neither single received a physical release so they weren't permitted to chart on the Hot 100. The band indulged in the rock star life for a couple years until they recognized the damage it was causing and started cleaning up. In 1999, he was sent a Santana demo and worked on improving the lyrics and melody and sent the demo back to Santana. The song was "Smooth", and after 15 years without any hits for Santana, he had one of the biggest Hot 100 hits of all time. Rob Thomas continued having hits for most of the 00s with Matchbox Twenty, as well as with his more pop-leaning solo career that began in 2005. His last songwriter hit was with Rixton's sample of "Lonely No More" on "Me and My Broken Heart" in 2014. Paul Anka Points: 26,480 Paul Anka grew up in Ottawa, Canada, where he learn to sing in his church choir and took piano lessons. He performed solo-written song "Diana" to ABC records when he was 15, got a record deal, and the song went #2 on the Hot 100 shortly after his 16th birthday, turning him into one of the first teen idols in pop music. He distinguished himself from other pop singers of the time by writing his own songs, despite being very young. When his success slowed a little in the 1960s as Rock N Roll took over, he became one of the first singers to book a Vegas residency, although he had moderate hits for most of the decade. During this time, he also worked on establishing himself as a major star in Italy by collaborating with local musicians. At the end of the 1960s, he began writing more for other singers, including one of Frank Sinatra's biggest classics, "My Way", and "She's A Lady" for Tom Jones and "Puppy Love" for Donny Osmond. He had a comeback in the mid 70s with three top 10 hits, including #1 hit "(You're) Having My Baby". Around the release of Thriller, Paul Anka and Michael Jackson wrote some songs together, and Paul Anka sued Michael Jackson for stealing the recordings from his studio. Those demos were used in several Michael Jackson posthumous songs, including "This Is It", "Love Never Felt So Good" and "Don't Matter To Me". He also mentored Michael Buble in the early 00s after seeing him perform for Jay Leno in Las Vegas. Most streamed Hot 100 hits on Spotify 337m - Don't Matter To Me (Drake feat. Mr. Duff Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 Rob Thomas made the top 50 with very few songs compared to others here The amount of self-written songs he has Unwell, If You're Gone, How Far We've Come, Lonely No More are some of my favorites from him. He's a surprise to make the chart, let alone get in the top 50! He's so wildly talented. Wish he or the band (Matchbox Twenty) could release new music again. Their last (North) was amazing!

Ash12345 Posted January 15, 2020 Author Posted January 15, 2020 (edited) 46. Sam Cooke Points: 26,565 Referred to by many as the King of Soul, Sam Cooke began getting recognition when he replaced R.H. Harris as the lead singer of popular gospel group "The Soul Stirrers". In 1956, he decided to make the risky decision to begin a solo career and shift from making gospel music for religious blacks to making R&B music for broader audiences. That move paid off when he released "You Send Me" in 1957, which was unique for its time for taking influences from pop, R&B and gospel, and it became a huge crossover hit, with six weeks at #1 on the R&B charts and three weeks at #1 on the Top 100 pop charts. Many more hits followed in the late 50s and early 60s. During the early 60s, he worked to ensure he had greater ownership of his music than most other black artists had at the time, by founding his own publishing company, getting involved in arranging his songs, and taking ownership of his masters in 1963. Sam Cooke was previously worried about the repercussions from his white fans if he got involved in the civil rights movement, but after seeing the reception and impact of Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind", he felt encouraged to write his own song on positive change with "A Change Is Gonna Come". His producers initially kept the song as a B-side to avoid alienating his white fans, but after Sam Cooke was killed under controversial circumstances in 1964, the song was released as a single and became an anthem for the civil rights movement. As one of the first black performers to appeal to both black and white teenagers, he was of great importance to popularizing soul music within the mainstream, and following his death, his compositions returned to the charts two dozen times as covers by other artists.
