Platinum Hit 12: ST☆RDOM

Thank you!!!!!! @uvie and @hug :heart2:

"The present future" basically = the future is here, the future is now and we are ahead of our time - we're crafting our future in the present. The Renaissance was a "rebirth" or "reawakening" period in European history and with that brought culture and art. So I was inspired by that and used it as a metaphor for freedom/unity/world peace and challenging censorship, hence why the second verse adopts a more poetic approach: "Freedom blooms transcendent / With our conscience blossoming / We understand the other / We're cultured in the foreign / All the colours uncensored" ! Something like New Romantics or The Louvre would be points of comparison. Also it sounds like a Katy/Carly/Ariana collab in my head nnn the melody SCALPS tho I wish y'all could hear it :chick3: it kind of sounds like Katy's vocals on WOA and Carly's RAWM and Ariana's NTLTC especially in the chorus. And yes! The gradual reveal was definitely intentional. The song starts off with: "In the light, in the dark / Was terrified to explore" but by the end, there is no light and there is no dark. We reform all of our hearts. We paint with different colours of the same palette. "We're dancing on the ceilings" is very much a No Tears Left To Cry MOMENT because who dances on the ceiling? ... Yeah. Uh huh. Exactly! "We must forgive the past / To live in the future" if we don't forgive the past, how can we ever move on? How can we ever live in the future? Not with these archaic ideologies, henny. This is the NEW AGE.

WE BRIDGE ALL OF OUR DIFFERENCES.

WE CHOOSE TO CROSS THE HORIZON.

AND LIVE BEYOND THE TRADITION.

WE TRANSFORM. WE AWAKE. TO A DIFFERENT KIND OF CHANGE.

WE CAST OUT VIOLENCE. HATE AWAY.

NOW. WHEN. WE. SEE. RED.

.

.

.

LOVE, NOT RAGE.

In addition, we can be both artists and works of art simultaneously. We are art personified in a way. BUT we are also creators, we possess imagination and creativity. We recognise the beauty within the self, the other and the beauty around us and the way in which we contribute to that beauty is what The Renaissance is all about. Humans are also made of 93% stardust so, in a way, when we lose our spark (i.e. before our rebirth/reawakening) we were mere ashes and ashes also represent death. It was a play on the words "ashes" and "stardust". Humans are technically the ashes and dust of stars, we are made of star debris. We are living works of art. The living art of the Universe. We're damaged goods, we're human, we're fools but we're also stardust and we're valuable and The Renaissance frees us from our fear of the unknown, no more reinforcing the status quo because soon we'll learn to let go. It's very much a fun pop song as much as it is a social commentary and artistic statement. I definitely wanted to elevate my song in that way and push myself as a songwriter rather than resorting to any of the cliches that come with a challenge like this, because I knew I would've flopped hard if I didn't take the route that was calling, CALLING my spirit. My soul. Also if I were to write a "radio" song I want the messages that I would put in my music to be ones of understanding, acceptance, freedom, creativity, peace and love. I would take advantage of the airwaves to facilitate my mass movement of love and peace. What better theme is there to write about in a challenge where freedom is restricted than freedom itself? The Kunst will always be inside of me. And outside of me, is the inside of the Kunst; inside of me that flows outside in and within and without I am nothing but me, myself AND I. S E X.

Attention all songwriters! Your blockbuster pop anthems have been sold, sung by and sent to radio for some of our top tier artists around the globe. But how did they fare in Oceania? Let's take a look at the preliminary radio callout scores and what the radio DJs had to say…

CREAM OF THE CROP*

3. @minho – “Dream in a Dream”
I– I loved everything about this, honestly. The “the perfume is enchanting” refrain was genius (Perfume Genius, ha), the lyricism was casual yet alluring, I was scalped by the use of “crescendoing”, the “tucked away…” couplet’s internal rhyming and phrasing was perfection. The word choice of “drenched” was literally the only thing I lingered on but that’s such a minor thing. Although this genre probably wasn’t what you had in mind, I could definitely see this being a hit for a country or folk singer. Kacey Musgraves or a pre-pop Taylor Swift would do this justice.

5. @Obsession – “Difficult Romance”
Bad Romance who? I know your song wasn’t inspired by that at all, but that’s the first thing that came to mind when I saw this title. That said, this is pretty much a perfect fit for this challenge, you really understood the brief and nailed it. Lyrically, this song is as strong as any of your others for me, and yet has that radio friendly element. A relatable concept represented in an interesting way, a healthy balance of familiar phrases and original lyrics, and a strong and pop-friendly central metaphor of dancing.

11. @Gastrodonatella – “Shadow Tag”
I don’t understand why you were so hesitant to attempt a more radio-friendly style of writing because this was very good and almost exactly what we were after. Verse two was the only part where the meter was a little off, at least in my opinion, it could have been tighter, and the title felt almost shoehorned in because of that. The prechorus was textbook pop and the out-after-midnight vibe was very suited to a radio-friendly song, yet invited the pretty astral imagery you used. Conceptually it was nothing outstanding but I think you nailed enough other elements to make this a really great pop song.

13. @Tsareena – “Dancing on My Own”
I liked the Snow White interpolation, I found that really interesting. The kind of staggered, stammered chorus was definitely a choice but I really liked it and felt it worked in a way it didn’t detract from the song lyrically. It was unique. This was pretty ambitious overall and your connections to the other songs were definitely there. I feel like it shouldn’t scream single but to me it definitely could be one? Like one of those surprise hits you don’t expect to be a hit. You tackled this challenge in a way I don’t think anyone else has thus far, but I really liked what you did with it. Props.

15. @Kunst – “Toxic”
Serving “Bad Girlfriend” from the description. :eli: I’m already scalped from “Alcohollywood Avenue” tbh. A unique lyric. This is definitely a scalp overall and there were plenty of moments where if I had a wig at one point, I wouldn’t now. That said, it did feel a little underdeveloped in parts, there were typos and little mistakes here and there which I could overlook but it definitely dulled the vibe a little. This is right up there for me still but there are little things which hold it back a bit. The opening couplet in the bridge though, I’m never recovering. Whew.

OTHER DEBUTS

1. @beatinglikeadrum – “The Praying of Job”
I’m so glad you included that explanation because it clarified a lot and really impressed me. This is easily your most ambitious concept to date, and I felt it connecting to Praying in a strong but different way. All of your ideas were strong and you stuck to the central narrative well. I’m not sure if I could see this as a radio single, however I could see elements in the section before the chorus and between the second and third verse that would work in this manner. Overall I think more than anything this song has shown your personal growth as a writer and should be commended for that if nothing else.

2. @Nait Phoenix – “Tricks of the Trade”
What I could tell from this song was that you had a distinct melody (perhaps beat, too) in mind which can be both a pro and a con. It’s a pro in sections like the bridge where everything flows so effortless and just feels right. It’s a con in sections like the prechorus where a single word like “understand” is given its own line because that’s the way it should be sung, but it just appears awkward when read. Your rhyming was on point throughout and your structure was very pop and worked well, however there was a lot of talk about discoveries and wonders and secrets, and yet nothing was really revealed. My main suggestion would be to find a balance which not only sounds good if recorded, but doesn’t read awkwardly when solely analysing the lyrics.

4. @Citrus – “Fruit”
I. Am. Screaming. I’m glad someone decided to take this challenge and just have fun with it, wig. You still hit those briefs because the connections to the Fergie and Marina songs were definitely there. “I've got Mass producers in a panic” was G.O.L.D. (greatest. one. liner. deceased.) Rhyming was okay, but you took it a step further and had good internal rhymes too. This is more ‘Drag Race contestant trying to pursue a career in music’ than radio friendly pop song, but you definitely nailed most other aspects of the challenge such as having tight verses and memorable lyrics.

6. @SeanKevinMusic – “Run Away With Me”
There’s no question that this could work as a potential radio single option, which is great. The rhyming in this part, “I know you'll hurt me again / say you're sorry then / we'll be best friends” was definitely a highlight for me. The main thing I’m missing is a point of difference or unique perspective, because a lot of it feels like it’s just very surface level, blanket phrases that could apply to everyone but doesn’t really apply to anyone. A few more details, specifics and emotions would have elevated this.

7. @RihsusChrist(ATG) – “Specter”

Even before reading your description I could kind of get that Florence vibe, so you channeled that well. Conceptually, this was sound, and I liked how you used different ghostly terminology throughout. The rhyming was of most concern for me, my advice would be that choosing the right rhymes is just as important as establishing a rhyme scheme. There were a few instances where it was clear you crafted your lyric around the rhyme, rather than the other way around (the house/mouse/blouse/louse verse especially, but there were forced rhymes in most verses). Your chorus was much stronger.

8. @Overprotected – “Back and Forth”

Radio friendly element? Check. I think it would have been really neat if you’d taken this in a more metaphorical, tug-of-war, playing on opposites kind of direction with the title. That said, what you have is nice, it just doesn’t offer a unique interpretation or take on an on-and-off relationship. You clearly have a natural sense of how to structure a good pop song, my advice would be to just be a bit more adventurous with techniques, and have more standout, clever lyrics.

9. @Kylie Jenner – “Like a Prayer”
Your vibe and voice in this season is so unique and I don’t think I’ll ever not love that. Rhyming appears to come so easy for you, yet never feels forced, which is such a strong skill to have, and probably why your rap game is so strong also. “Don’t contain and repress / Don’t refrain, just confess” was masterful. This is really well written and nails the vibe it’s going for, and while I’m not certain it’s entirely radio-ready due to the deeply sexual nature of the song, it’s certainly catchy and could be a fan favourite album cut.

10. @UFO – “The Renaissance”
First of all, love the title. Gorgeous. That second “either” doesn’t need to be there, and it messes up the flow, delete it. “Now when we see red, love not rage” was definitely a standout lyric, whew. I think this was an interesting take on the challenge, Chained To The Rhythm who? It seemed like you were describing an idealist future where we learn from our past mistakes and can put aside our differences to find world peace, wrapped in Renaissance-era metaphors? I use. I think this is more of an artistic statement piece rather than a radio single, but this was certainly an ambitious concept and I think you adhered to the central metaphor well.

12. @Xedretinz Lododnz – “Teenage Dream”

Points for song choice, first of all. The extended rhyme scheme in the first verse was great and none of them felt forced to me. The biggest issue was that a lot of the lines didn’t make sense and I’m not sure if that’s a English/grammar problem which I can usually overlook if the intent is clear, but sometimes I just couldn’t get what you were going for. I think you did stick to the overall vibe of the original Teenage Dream, but a little too closely at times, which wasn’t really the aim of this challenge.

14. @PoKiTaurus – “Remember When”

I actually listened to the original song before your entry because I remember it being one of my favourites on ‘Goodbye Lullaby’, yet I haven’t heard it in years. I tear. Anyway, you definitely hit the brief about not being derivative of the song you were inspired by, this is the polar opposite. I liked the choice to use the title as a lead in from the verse rather than in the chorus. I’d like more details though, all of these events you describe are very general and could apply to everyone without really hitting home for anyone (I think I made a similar critique earlier). Also beware of lyrics like, “How could you say no / you said yes” which is just a waste of a second lyric as it’s redundant.

16. @Speezy – “Please Deliver To Heaven (P.O BOX 000)”

A title, we use. Perched for “Please Deliver To Hell (P.O BOX 666)” now. “Handful/hands full” was clever and cute, and a lyrical highlight for me. I also liked the “harps/harmonious songs” alliteration. “Engorged”, however, was certainly a choice. I feel like this would either get heavy rotation or completely blacklisted from contemporary Christian radio depending on the true meaning of the song because I was picking up on a lot of suggestive language and as you’re the King of Sex Bops in PH I wasn’t entire sure what I was reading, but there were definitely moments of heavenly brilliance and also moments where I didn’t know if you’d ever make it to the pearly gates.

17. @Temporal – “October Blue”
A title, we use. [2] I’m probably going to have the #unpopularopinion on the panel once again but this didn’t feel particularly inspired by anything else or that it was written with the intention of being a radio single whatsoever. At best it feels like a fan-favourite deep cut, and that’s me being generous, but mostly it just feels like a Temporal song written as a Temporal song with some of your favourite songs/artists listed above it. The Golden Hour reference was cute, but Golden Hour in itself isn’t radio friendly pop perfection. More important than nailing the brief however is the song itself and it’s a good song, and that’s what we’re mainly asking for, but we know you can write songs like this, so it would have been nice to see you push yourself a little more in my opinion.

18. @Achilles. – “Brand New”

Only two gender options? Triggered. I like that you chose to do a duet, thinking outside the box, check. I’m also glad that you chose not to write out all the ad libs, because that definitely would have been more of a distraction than anything else. I don’t know, you know you were my #1 last episode and I commented on the fact your song had an effortless radio friendly element to it which I really loved. It’s quite the opposite with this one, almost as if you’ve sacrificed part of your lyricism for trying to be overly generic. The first verse was pretty good, and I loved the prechorus, but the chorus was unusually bland for you, the wording of the “put at ease my mind” lyric was very shoehorned to end a rhyme, stars aligning and feeling alive… it was all too much cliche. You still have something here, but you really lost me with that chorus, and a lot of the rhyming thereafter felt unnatural and forced too.

19. @Auburn – “Celestial”
This title. Triggered. [2] My personal bad experience with this song title aside, I really enjoyed this. It felt radio friendly, it felt natural, you worked with the vibe and theme of the song well and it was pleasant to read. The lyrics were short and punchy, and every new line had something new to say. I feel like the bridge was a missed opportunity to develop something further, but I suppose it’s not uncommon for artists to reiterate ideas they’ve already expressed in the bridge. A few more unique details and unique comparisons (i.e. linking something celestial to something you wouldn’t expect) wouldn’t have gone astray, but this was nice.

20. @ceremonials – “Odyssey”

Y’all coming through with the titles this round. Bitch, don’t think I didn’t pick up on those “No Sun On The Horizon” references. Or was it recycling? I’ll call it a reference and let it slide. Similar to Temporal’s song, this largely felt like you just choose to write a song for you rather than attempting the radio friendly aspect of the challenge, and while a good song that isn’t radio friendly is always going to be better than an average song that is radio friendly, it just would have been nice to see more since we know you can deliver this type of song on the regular.

21. @MattyTacos – “Your Ego”

You didn’t have to write me a song, awh. The bridge was my favourite part of this whole song, it really hooked me and it felt like a fitting climax in a way a lot of others didn’t utilise their bridge to be, so I stanned that. I liked the nod to the previous round with the petals reference, whether that was intentional or not. I felt like your chorus was a little lacklustre and could have used development, and the “fluids flow” lyric was a little odd, but the verses were solid for the most part.

22. @OreGuy – “Believe”

You did a great job of working a different story around the “Believe” title that felt inspired by it but wasn’t its derivative. It also felt radio friendly, so you did a great job as far as meeting the different challenge elements goes. I really liked the opening of the first verse, it gave me a Natalie Imbruglia “Torn” vibe, I’m not sure why, but I liked it. “But things are difficult it seems / When someone else is in the sheets” was brilliant. Rhyming and rhythm on point. I would have liked to have seen more of those unique elements again (i.e. what were the intimate things that were shared), little details to make it more believable and specific.

23. @Corsola – “Sonatine”

This was nice.

@Aurora 1) thank you for your review :weeps: like really, you and uvie made me feel more confident about my songwritnig with your comments so far this season 2) yeah, I noticed the "week" typo instead of "weak" when re-reading the song the other day :rip: 3) totally a take on bad girlfriend with a little more subtlety and alcohol, and maybe a tad bit more autobiographical that anne-marie :eli: 4) i already acknowledged myself that i will never come up with nothing as smart as alchoholywod avenue so i'll declare that line my peak even tho i came up with it in a state of intoxication (i wrote most of the song drunk lol)

You may be pleased to know I actually fixed up some of the more obvious typos in your entry because it was blatantly obvious what you meant and it was frustrating to see what I could tell was a strong song be plagued by that. I don't think anyone really cares about typos or things like that anyway, and I didn't really take any points off for that. There were just lots of little things that could have been tweaked and I put it down to a lack of time/being drunk (hence the typos) why they weren't there. It just could have used a little bit more refinement. But for me, this was between your first and second entry; not as good as Butterfly Weather (what could be? :weeps:) but a step up from last time.

@Aurora it's funny that you mention hating "celestial" because originally the word was going to be "historical" but it really didn't fit the theme of the song at all :cm:

Citrus – Fruit

This checked every box I had this week. Not a love song, creative concept, and engaging. You utilized the uniqueness of this challenge (it being pop oriented) and didn’t use it to just write a cheesy love song demo. You done did good!

Gastrodonatella – Shadow Tag

This was fine in that it was written well. I just feel like this has been so done before? And even some lines I felt like I had read before in one of your previous entries. I was hoping you would let go and really have fun this challenge. Regardless, the pre-chorus and chorus were fantastic and the title was cute. Good job!

PoKiTaurus – Remember When

This was a little too elementary for me to really feel it competed strongly against some of the other entries this round. I think you took a very worn down theme and didn’t add any element to make it unique. I did feel like the story’s progression would make a great Andy Grammar pop song that would go viral again for being played at weddings, so you didn’t fail this round completely.

Kunst – Toxic

The chorus reads very nicely. I think the twist of you being the cheater wasn’t unique enough to make it stand out against others with similar themes, but it wasn’t another love song, so I’m complaining. I love the last triplet in the chorus. “Perfect stranger in the dark / Spilling danger in a bar / What a toxic thing you are.” THAT is how you end a chorus, ladies.

Temporal – October Blue

I really feel like this is your season, girl. Undeniably, this is a great song. I think it perfectly teetered the line of being a PH song and a radio hit. My only worry is that you’ll pull a Midsummer and do this topic every round…but that’s neither here nor there. “I glance your way and thunder cracks / In your eyes lightning refracts” flows so nicely and is such an image that is both vivid and relatable.

ceremonials – Odyssey

Cute, well written, to the point. A pop song without being cheesy or a drag.

beatinglikeadrum – The Praying of Job

For a pop challenge, I don’t think this fit the brief at all. I think you kind of missed the mark with this very metaphorical, lengthy ode to religion. I understand it holds personal value to you, however, so I commend you for writing about it!

NaitPhoenix – Tricks of the Trade

Out of everything I’ve read SO FAR, this resembled a pop song the most. Just work on tightening up your lyrics and concepts a bit more – I was a little unsure of what the theme was for a bit and some of the lines were a bit inconsistent and sloppy. Overall, well done though!

minho – Dream in a Dream

Not really a pop song but the line “Every note, crescendoing / Raindrops strumming the harp” WHEW I don’t know why, but that got me. But Is crescendoing a word?

Obsession – Difficult Romance

Surprisingly, I liked this a lot! I could see this as a ballad you’d listen to on a rainy day when you were feeling sorry for yourself. “As I hold your hand in mine / We tango our last goodbye” was a tad bit awkward; I don’t know if you were thinking mine and goodbye rhymed or not.

SeanKevinMusic – Run Away With Me

Even though this was a pop round, this was a little too base level to stand out. I do think you’re getting the hang of it though, so please don’t be discouraged. This was by no means a bad song.

RhisusChrist(ATG) – Specter

The first four lines were solid. “Ya dragging on my blouse / Like a parasitic louse” took me out of it. The pre-chorus was excellent. I think the chorus could’ve been a lot stronger. I think with pop songs, I think the chorus is the selling point. That’s usually what people listen for.

Overprotected – Back and Forth

I understand the concept being that they’re conflicted about their emotions, but I think this felt a little too undirected and concise for me to get on board.

KylieJenner – Like A Prayer

I stan you. I feel like every week you just get better and better. I think I stanned last week’s entry more, but this was still a slay. Sia better watch her wig with your “I’m alive” line. “Know I’m a girl that turns water into wine” WHEW.

UFO – The Renaissance

Way too poetic to be a pop song, sorry sis. Which artist could you see singing this? I don’t think this would be Selena’s top choice. I do love the concept though and think the chorus was pop friendly enough. I think it has potential to be a really fun pop song about being born again and letting go and being free. You were so close!

Xedretinz Lododnz – Teenage Dream

Proof read, proof read, proof read. I understand grammar and spelling mistakes happen, I do, but it really does pull you out of it when you have to read a sentence a few times to figure out what it says. I think the chorus was good, the second half being weaker. I also think although it plays to the theme of being a teenager in love, the name felt shoehorned in there. Nonetheless, this was one of the few songs I could see as a pop song.

Tsareena – Dancing On My Own
WHEW you better serve me a pop CHORUS.  Insert girlwithbigboobsdancing.gif The concept was actually pretty heartbreaking but I love it for that. A Chandelier tea. Well done!

Speezy – Please Deliver to Heaven (P.O. Box 000)

Well the chorus actually was pretty great. I like the use of the word heaven in it. The title though, keep it fat.

Achilles – Brand New

This was so good! The chorus was excellent. I could definitely hear it in my head. Sweet, simple, and fit the brief completely. A+!

Auburn – Celestial

The second half of the chorus was my favorite part. Overall, I think the chorus was the strongest part which is good for a pop song. I think it’s definitely something I could as being an upbeat, but chill song you can sway to with your bae by yo side. Wasn’t too psyched for the AABBCC rhyme scheme in the verses, but that’s a personal preference. Goodjob!

MattyTacos – Your Ego

Well…the chorus was pretty anticlimactic. I did really love the opening line though.

OreGuy – Believe

This was actually pretty cute! I think it was pretty straight forward, and there wasn’t anything that really stood out to me, but nonetheless, it fit the challenge and that can’t be said about most the entries this round!

Corsola – Sonatine

Well….yes.

Episode 3 Chart Analysis

Once again, the unreliable nature of our global communications network made it almost impossible to host results in a timely manner, so we opted to host them on the private Discord communications server instead. As I'm sure everyone knows, this episode was an important one to succeed in. There will unfortunately be 5 demo songwriters dropped from our publishing company after this episode's conclusion.

However, we understand that in the music industry, you're not only as good as your last big hit. At Platinum Records, we look at the bigger picture. We've reviewed everyone's progress over the past three episodes and we've made our cuts based on who has brought in the most revenue for us on average.
