It's not that radio's influence is increasing per se, but that the decrease in impact of streaming has increased the power of radio at the moment if that makes sense. Let's look at the below example. Sales are being ignored to make it easier. Since I don't know how Billboard actually calculates these things, let's assume 1M streams = 1 point and 1M AI also equals 1 point. (I know it's not even close to that, just using it for ease of showing the point.)

Normal Circumstances

Song A: 45M streams (45 points) + 37M AI (37 points) = 82 points

Song B: 25M steams (25 points) + 56M AI (56 points) = 81 points

Song C: 10M streams (10 points) + 70M AI (70 points) = 80 points

Here it's clear that Song A would be #1, Song B would be #2, and Song 3 would be #3. But if we then reduce the amount of streams as we're seeing now (let's say a 10% drop in streams across the board to make it simple) yet keep the same radio AI since that hasn't been affected yet...

Pandemic Circumstances

Song A: 40.5M streams (40.5 points) + 37M AI (37 points) = 77.5 points

Song B: 22.5M streams (22.5 points) + 56M AI (56 points) = 78.5 points

Song C: 9M streams (9 points) + 70M AI (70 points) = 79 points

As you can see, a whole different ranking is established. Again, this is incredibly simplified and I know it won't exactly result in these sweeping changes in reality, but I think it's clear each radio spin is more powerful on the Hot 100 right now than it was just two weeks ago. I agree with you though that readjusting radio AI to also be lower across the board would just bring everything back to normal, that's why I was wondering if/when they'll do that.

They won't change anything. When singles sales died in late 2001 the hot 100 basically became the Radio Songs chart.

At least songs are still getting streams/sales even when they are still down so the Hot 100 won't be a copy of the Radio Songs chart like in 2002-2004.

Wait that's true. :skull: Welp, guess we're getting a slightly radio fueled Hot 100 for the time being. Glad my fave is (shockingly) doing best at radio right now between the three metrics. :lmao:

Who tf wants to hear The Box this late though? It'll be on power rotation in the summer if it continued to grow. Didnt it hit #1 in January :skull:

I've been saying Pop Radio is gonna latch on late and that it had 98m AI with barely any pop AI.

We should expect a lower update tomorrow tho? She will be rolling over last Friday's update.
Since she didn't have a radio deal I don't think its spins will decrease much tomorrow tbh, any tea on this?

Thanks :heart2:

It didn't have a deal (I think), so I think it's okay for BMH.

I'm surprised she's still doing pretty okay spin wise. Also maybe just maybe she'll get a spot in at 10 because of the songs dropping hard ahead of her. :jonny: Funny too that BEP is finally getting another hit and out pacing her again fsdklj

Probably in a week or two (more likely two). I have mixed feelings about it, not quite sure, but I have a feeling it's not being well received. It's such a weired, has potential but the chorus is kinda... disappointing.

thank you!

so, let's wait

I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but the fact that a pop radio Top 10 is actually possible... :jonny:

Bye. The radio programmers bias is so obvious :rip: This song should’ve at least reached Top 10. It had the same callouts as MOM and they’re still performing similarly on Spotify/Apple Music/iTunes, yet one is smashing and one is getting dropped because of its country sound.

Still one of the best songs of the year. :clap3:

Radio is without a doubt being mega-overinflated right now. There's no cars on the road, everything is shut down. All these songs are probably barely getting half their audience.

Traffic is down 40%+ in every metropolitan city at this point.

Metropolitan Area Initial Drop Date Severe Drop Date % Drop March 20 % Drop March 27
New York March 13th March 14th 43% 48%
Los Angeles March 12th March 13th 37% 45%
Chicago March 10th March 13th 32% 44%
Dallas-Ft. Worth March 12th March 14th 35% 45%
Houston March 13th March 13th 33% 40%
Washington, DC March 12th March 14th 36% 41%
Miami March 12th March 14th 36% 48%
Philadelphia March 12th March 14th 39% 48%
Atlanta March 13th March 14th 28% 34%
Boston March 12th March 13th 39% 41%
San Francisco March 6th March 12th 51% 54%
Seattle March 3rd March 5th 29% 53%
New Orleans March 13th March 14th 37% 42%
Detroit March 12th March 14th 40% 62%
Nationwide March 13th March 14th 30% 41%

Trying to figure out every city's audience reach right now would be hard, and prob unreasonable,  but Billboard could atleast just reduce radio's point influence on Hot 100 for the meantime because all these songs are just getting completely fake inflated numbers at radio.

The difference is, MOM managed to increase on callouts week to week.

Do we think MOM's pop radio push is organic or nah? It feels like the label could've fueled it once they saw it was actually going somewhere, but it could also just be that pop radio has nothing else to play right now.

Songs like Stupid Love and I Love Me are definitely going to benefit from that, as well as BL/AY/MOM which are going to remain at top because of the lack of anything else to spam

Callouts have been nothing but great, it's organic to me. Song is amazing, y'all should bop it.

Apparently radio has actually gained audience in the UK. I don’t know how that translates in America but it makes sense. Radios have hosts that talk, they’re having conversations with celebs and giving out news. For people that are isolated alone they’re good company
