Pink Matter Posted December 27, 2017 Author Posted December 27, 2017 Top 100 Singles Singles 50-31 50) Alex Cameron|Candy May To kick off my top 50, we start off with the intro to Alex Cameron's Forced Witness, Candy May. A lovely synthpop earworm, Candy May is about a man who is in an abusive relationship with a woman named Candy May. He loves her and takes the abuse because he believes that it's her way of expressing her love to him. Given how catchy the song is though, I feel most would be too lost in the sauce to acknowledge the lyrics. 49) LION BABE|Hit The Ceiling Here we have the (unfortunately) stand-alone single, Hit The Ceiling, by the duo LION BABE. Hit The Ceiling is about what happens when you reach your potential and hit your limits. Once you hit the ceiling you have to grind harder to break down your limitations. Lucas' production is a major highlight, as it gives me some strong '90s vibes, and Jilian's voals compliment it well. I love how she enunciates certain words when she sings because when coupled with the production the song leaves me with a sense of nostalgia. 48) Sabrina Claudio|Unravel Me Can anyone think of a word that can be used to describe "not like the others"? Whatever that word is, it perfectly defines Unravel Me in comparison to the rest of the mixtape the song is from. Backed by hard hitting drums, sweet synths, and the slight hint of guitar riffs in the background, the explosive Unravel Me is about Sabrina prolonging an inevitable breakup because she doesn't want to hurt her soon-to-be ex's feelings. The guy keeps trying to work through things, but Sabrina won't allow him to know the inner workings of her deepest thoughts and secrets. I love the way Sabrina uses her voice (both on this song as well as throughout the mixtape). It can be incredibly breathy and sexy in the verses, and is layered on top of each other to give the song a bit more depth during the chorus. Almost like an instrument. 47) Chaz Bundick Meets The Mattson 2|Star Stuff What For? found eviscerated. This is one of the benefits to working with collaborating with artitsts as they can help you out in areas that you may not be the best at. A trippy psychedelic rock song with hints of jazz elements, Star Stuff is about a failed relationship between Chaz and his ex and how the memories are starting to fade. With the instrumentation and Chaz's vocals fluttering in and out, this is a great song to just get lost in your own thoughts to. 46) The xx|Performance One of the saddest songs I've listened to this year, this was an automatic highlight off of The xx's comeback album. The use of the violin and the bare production backed by the simple guitar strums help to support and add the necessary emotional depth and somberness that conveys the feeling of playing this person who is hurting on the inside but decides to put on a smile to fool those around them. The vocal performance by Romy is just the icing on the cake. 45) Calvin Harris|Cash Out (feat. ScHoolboy Q, PARTYNEXTDOOR, and D.R.A.M.) This is by far, the most unexpected, but welcome, musical transitions we've had this year. A great blend of dance, funk, and Hip-Hop, Cash Out is, and was, one of the best songs to listen to this summer. Infectious production provided by Calvin, catchy hooks and melodies provided by PND and DRAM, and a smooth rap provided by Groovy Tony himself; what's not to love. An all around fantastic song. Highkey I don't even start the album at Slide anymore Disclaimer: Isn't it interesting that whenever an artist goes down the urban route, or blends their music wih urban music, it almost always seems to make it better? TAW 44) Syd|Bad Dream/No Looking Back As an artist, I feel this has been a great year for Syd. Not only did she release the best project between her and her bandmates, she also seems to have developed a musical style of her own that she has developed and evolved into what we have here. Bad Dream/No Looking Back sounds like a natural evolution of the sound found on her debut album Fin. Starting out hazily and progressing into production with beats interspersed about and mixed with her sultry vocals the song seamlessly transitions, spirals, and breaks down into a dreamy soundscape with snaps spread out in which she sings about what would happen if her friends with benefits turned into something more. If this is any indication of what future Syd music sounds like, I wouldn't mind waiting a little longer for a new The Internet album if that meant getting another great Syd album. I still would like a new The Internet album ASAP though 43) SiR|Ooh Nah Nah (feat. Masego) Man it seems TDE does nothing but secure/breed talent within their roster. SiR, the new TDE recruit, released his debut EP Her Too with TDE at the top of the year, and on it included the standout song Ooh Nah Nah. In all honesty, I don't think this song is particularly special in it's composition or song writing. But for whatever reason, this song is so incredibly addictive. One of the few songs that I kept going back to since I heard it back in February. With assistance from Masego, SiR was able to effortlessly create a smooth R&B jam and I'm certainly looking forward to what he has in store in the future. 42) SOHN|Signal While the previous R&B song played by the books, this one certainly went down the more alternative route. The production here is by and large the highlight of this song! Though the album didn't really stick with me, this song never ceased to blow me away. It starts off a bit slow but gradually turns into a bombastic arrangement of drums, clicks, and synths that subdues itself during the first chorus but explodes afterwards. It would've been higher up on my list but there went a period in time where I stopped listening to this for a while but after coming back to it, I can say it definitely has not lost its luster. 41) Foxygen|On Lankershim Loving the '70s vibe this song is giving off as well as the amalgamation of sounds being produced on here too. It's hectic and can ultimately seem exhausting to listen to. Nevertheless, the challenge of digesting everything that was going on was fun! A great highlight from the beginning of the year.
Pink Matter Posted December 27, 2017 Author Posted December 27, 2017 (edited) Top 100 Singles Singles 50-31 40) Mali Music|Loved By You (feat. Jazmine Sullivan) Looking for some good 'ol traditional R&B? Look no further. Backed by a guitar, violin, and harp, Mali and Jazmine sing a due about love with so much soul it'll warm your heart. Given the lack of Jazmine music recently, this collaboration is more than welcome. 39) Joey Bada$$|TEMPTATION One of Joey's poppiest (if not his most poppiest) songs ever, TEMPTATION is a rap song in which he addresses racism and discrimination towards African-Americans in the US. The song is light and soulful, which works to its favor as the song is very easy on the ears and as such, will be accessible to those who take the time to listen to it. All in all, it's always great to hear rap music with a message, and it's great someone as young as Joey is making this kind of music for the younger generation. This is a track that I recommend highly. 38) Snoh Aalegra|Nothing Burns Like The Cold (feat. Vince Staples) I love Snoh's throwback, retro vibe (it's very Lana-like). Whenever I listen to this song (or any of her songs tbh), I always feel like I'm in a black and white movie a la Casablanca (as referenced by Vince later on). With a soft, silky smooth voice and assistance from the mellow and laid back Vince Staples, Nothing Burns Like The Cold is a song about two people in a failing relationship who come to realize that it's easier to let go than to stay together. 37) Father John Misty|Two Wildly Different Perspectives Probably my favorite song from Pure Comedy, Two Wildly Different Perspectives, as the name suggests, is a song about those with incredibly different perspectives. In this case, the song can be, and is most likely a reference to the increased polarization of the many ideologies in American politics. Very well written, and backed by nothing more than a piano, FJM created a very simple, yet beautiful commentary of what's currently going on America. I love the spacey, almost static-y effects found throughout the song as it gives the song some personality as well. 36) Ibeyi|Deathless (feat. Kamasi Washington) This song sounds like a fusion of World Music mixed with Neo-Soul and Jazz and it makes for an incredibly engaging listen. With a supporting sax, courtesy of Kamasi, one of the sisters Lisa sings about the racial discrimination she experienced at an incredibly young age by the police in Paris. I think this gets her point across better than I could hope to convey: To be “Deathless” means that there’s no end. Someone wrote, “They buried us, but they didn’t know we were seeds.” It means there’s no end to love, there’s no end to joy, there’s no end to music. A powerful song with a powerful message. 35) Lil' Uzi Vert|The Way Life Goes (feat. Oh Wonder) When rappers are beginning to make great pop music, who needs pop stars? Certainly very different in comparison to the rest of his album, The Way Life Goes takes a more melodic approach to talking about heartbreak. On this track, although he himself is hurting, he assures his ex that in time, things will get better and she'll get over what they once had. Time, the ultimate truth teller healer. There's also a cute lil' Nicki remix if anyone's interested 34) Thundercat|Drink Dat (feat. Wiz Khalifa) An absolute jam. I don't have much to say here except I can imagine it'd be great to get ****ed up to this song. The hook is the highlight of the song but I love Wiz's flow as well. Love the spacey production too. 33) Ronika|Late Night Radio (feat. Swisha) If you're in the mood for some light pop bops, Ronika's your girl. Late Night Radio is a fusion of electro and disco inspired R&B with pop that is sure to make for a fun listen. If you're into K-Pop/K-R&B, then you'll love this. 32) Lorde|Green Light So for the longest time, I thought this song (as well as the entire album it's from) wasn't anything special and wondered why it was receiving so much acclaim. Out of no where, the song just clicked for me and I'm so happy it did. It just fills me with a sense of euphoria and something close to exhilaration, which is odd because this is a song about heartbreak. With Green Light, Lorde sheds her budding, angsty exterior for that of a young woman who is reflecting on the experiences she's accumulated over the course of 3 or 4 years. On Green Light, Lorde is looking for a sense of closure from her past relationship so that she can move on and start anew. An all around well crafted song that should've done much better on the charts than it did. 31) Majid Jordan|Gave Your Love Away Whew, what kind of '90s'd bop? An unexpected, yet welcomed punch, Gave Your Love Away acts as the "first" song on Majid Jordan's The Space Between. On Gave Your Love Away, Majid is singing about how he messed up and drove the one he loved away. Though lyrically, love isn't exactly new territory for the duo, y'all know what they say. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Ultimately, this song slaps Edited December 29, 2017 by Pink Matter

Tom Vercetti Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 Top 30 already, hmm. Quote Highkey I don't even start the album at Slide anymore Slide is def better as an opener but do you. Gave your love away is my favorite out these two sets, followed by candy may& bad dreams.
Kiss It Better Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 Green Light yes talent PND's voice on Cash Out is hot
Lazuli Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 Performance is cute but it's one of my least favourite on the album tbh Green Light
Love Drought Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 Unravel Me and Nothing Hurts But The Cold are such beautiful songs Hit The Ceiling and Gave Your Love Away are great bops Performance by The xx is not my favourite but it's definitely a great track Cash Out is low-key underrated, funk-HipHop fusion masterpiece and Joey Bada$$ deserves more recognition I was surprised by how well Chaz Bundick Meets the Mattson 2 worked I haven't listened to it in a while though SiR's oh na na reminds me of late 90's smooth R&B by D'Angelo. I didn't know he was signed to TDE Two Wildly Different Perspectives is also one of my favourites on Pure Comedy, I actually thought it could get nominated for SOTY at the Grammys I've been bopping all year to Drink Dat Syd has been killing it recently, she's really creating her own path and Bad Dream/No Looking Back is such a great example of Minimalistic R&B done right. Her debut and Almost Never Home is definitely better than Matt and Steve's work. I think Steve has a lot of potential too but he's still young so there's more room for him to grow and perfect his craft. I'm still hoping for a new Internet album though, the anticipation is killing me
Wicked Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 FJM, Thundercat YAS. Okay I'm going to listen to this Jhene song (along with the others), if this Jhene track makes me fall asleep it's on you.
