She deserves a lil break I think.

But only a short one.

More Sabrina relationship woes. It's not as deathly boring as some of the ballads, but some of the girls found the song to be annoying anyway. I usually don't rate these kinds of teen girl relationship drama songs, but I do approve of anything that takes shots at Shawn and/or Camila so it's alright in my book. Plus her lyrics can usually get at least one smirk out of me from some of the lines she drops.

...

Meloetta Carey: " this kinda drags."

Rev8: " she came for Harry's gig here."

Ewan Chaos: " Genuinely thought this was a Jack production cuz it kinda sounds like Sabrina covering a Bleachers song."

Ken Lee: " GOD is this song annoying. What in the Harry Styles reject."

Invisibility: " It takes everything in me not to hate the campfire singalong vibe (down there with matronly twinkly keyboards and children's choirs as far as music tropes go) but the lyrics really come through here and make me like the whole package."

Moonlight Nation: " Some fun storytelling, especially on the wonderfully sarcastic bridge. The 70s soft rock vibe is charming, but it leaves to be desired as a whole."

Move aside, Sabrina: situationship drama is very real, even for lesbians. On Coffee, Chappell laments about being unable to meet somebody even for a simple drink due to unresolved feelings that continue to swirl around inside of her. The potential pain of hearing them say something that might give you false hope... it's #relatable, but also a #downer.

...

Curaga: " Very pretty and dreamy :coffee:"

Invisibility: " Chappell's turn into a dreadful balladeer starts here, and it almost doesn't let up."

Moonlight Nation: " A simpler yet effective composition featuring a lovely mellow performance from Chappell and gorgeous production."

The hardest song to track down in the damn rate. They really wanted people to buy the physicals, cus this video was getting snatched down every other day. And for this? It's nice, I guess. It wouldn't add much to the album, sonically, but at least lyrically it has a deeper message about casting judgement on her for living her life as a young woman. And the "needless to say / you need less to say" wordplay is pretty cute.

...

Moonlight Nation: " My biggest grower from this rate. I'm usually not a fan of songs directed at haters, but Sabrina's writing is so classy while simultaneously blunt. It also helps she's being unfairly criticized for things most young women in the public eye go through, so it feels like an effective statement on behalf of her as well as her peers. Would have been a better fit as the album's closer."

Promise that the next one is not a Midwest Princess or Sabrina cut :rip:

Sabrina's hard because once the duds are out, I think she'll be untouched for a while.

Taking a break from being a bad-ass rave diva, Charli takes a moment to get introspective and talk about insecurities on I might say something stupid. Charli doesn't use as many flowery metaphors or double entendres as Sabrina, her songwriting is very in your face and obvious. To some people that really works. To others? Clearly not. Production is awesome though.

...

Meloetta Carey: "I hear some opera in the background."

Moonlight Nation: " Very important for the record's overarching themes, but I can't rate it any higher as it's essentially an interlude. A very poignant and introspective one, but an interlude nonetheless."

I think we're learning that the girls don't like the ballads that much. At least the ones that Sabrina and Chappell produce for us. For me? A perfectly nice track, but one that is done better thematically and sonically in other corners of this record. The already-eliminated Coffee does the same thing but a little bit more poignantly imo. Nice song though.

...

Rev8: " almost the same like the previous one."

Curaga: " her Weyes Blood tea... Beautiful performance."

Moonlight Nation: " It's only brought down by having less memorable production and melodies compared to the songs rated above it, but it's still a vulnerable composition featuring a poignant vocal performance from Chappell and an interesting central metaphor."

The closing track on Midwest Princess, it starts very mellow and down-tempo but picks up the pace pretty quickly. I like the fake out opening, and find the track itself to be a good fun time. A guilty pleasure, if you will :lakitu: And you know what? I really like the yodeling. I'm never sure about this song when I press play, but it usually has me bopping along by the end. Nice ending to an eclectic album such as this one.

...

Meloetta Carey: "might need an 8 minute version of this."

Curaga: " Love the vocals in the bridge."

Moonlight Nation: " Not gonna lie... it's a bit anticlimactic as the album's closer. It's a solid enough track, and I appreciate the subtle references to previous songs, but it sadly doesn't work to me."

10 x 3 (brokee, 305, Saddy)

8.5 x 1 (GreatestLoveofAll)

LOW SCORES

More slow songs getting massacred. I like Chappell's vocal performance on this one, yearning and wonderment in tandem. Can't say I'm surprise to see this one so low, though. It doesn't quite stand out much on the parent album, let alone next to the rest of the rate. Nice, but is nice enough here? Seems not.

...

Moonlight Nation: " I always appreciate a song that combines melancholy with sensuality."

with these 3 out of the way, I better not see any other Chappell songs leave for a minute.

The forgotten stepchild of the Brat album, relegated to the deluxe, and even worse: the only track not included on the remix project. A shame. Hello goodbye remains an acquired taste it seems. I like it! The sort of warm-yet-icy vibe is unique, but very Charli. It's mostly a downtempo number, so no surprises that it landed down here, but it is more melodically sound than some of the standard edition ballads I find. Different strokes, I guess.

...

Invisibility: " Misunderstood, underrated eurotrance chai banger! Doesn't deserve to be the least streamed track from Brat."

Moonlight Nation: " Another safe track, but this one less compelling compared to "Talk talk". Still good, though, and it didn't deserve to get omitted from the remix project. Carly Rae Jepsen would have done wonders to unlock its full potential."

The last diva to take a hit, Tinashe almost cracked to the top forty with her entire album but falls just short. I guess it was to be expected, No Simulation is more or less a glorified intro track as opposed to a full song. But what a nice intro it is! The vocal production needs to be shouted out here, my girl sounds flawless. The way she harmonizes with herself is to die for. Would be a 10 contender with a fully developed length and some more verses, bridges etc.

...

Rev8: "the worst song as the first one on the album, i'm sick."

Moonlight Nation: " Such a strong introduction to the project. Tinashe sounds beyond heavenly here. Shame it's too short, since the premise could have easily lend itself to a full song."

Only reason I gave that Sabrina song more than like a 2 nnnn

Everything else leaving works for me I'd say... sad to see both Charli's songs leave but tbh if it was gonna be anything I'm OK with it being those (even though Hello Goodbye is a super underrated song and not even the worst deluxe song!).

I would say that this another ex-bashing track, but I think this one is probably the best of the lot. Pretty cutting lyricism from Sabrina, an artist that usually prefers to express things through dick jokes and veiled insults. Not this time. Sharpest Tool is a mellow soundscape but somehow the most damning of all the breakup tracks. It's about Shawn, sure, but it's got a universal sort of appeal because at the end of the day... men are a predictable sort of species :rip:

...

Meloetta Carey: "This seems like something that would play in The Sims 3."

Rev8: " starts a bit slow... but then turns into a banger."

Ewan Chaos: " One of the longer songs on the album and it's boring. The God line is cute tho."

Invisibility: " Taylor-coded garbage. Snap out of it, Sabrina Thumbelina! Less of these garbage ballads!"

Moonlight Nation: " Extremely underappreciated. Production is classic Jack Antonoff in the best way and I love how Sabrina's frustration is conveyed through the lyrics."

So candid and upfront, I think about it all the time is one of the most memorable Brat tracks... at least on a lyrical level. Charli reflects on the place she is at in her life, thinking about children. Could they even fit into the life she's built? Would she regret giving up some of the freedoms she enjoys now? This stream of consciousness storytelling is one of the signature styles of the record, but it's never done more blatantly (and perhaps effectively) than on this song. I think that's worthy of respect, even if you don't like the track that much.

...

Invisibility: " I love when she's spiralling and getting serious about the crossroads her life is at, yeah. Plus the intro is extremely Yasutaka Nakata/Perfume coded and that's honey to these ears."

Moonlight Nation: " The Bon Iver remix took it to a new stratosphere of excellent, so even though the original is still great, it's become clear to me there was more potential to be unlocked."

Well, Tamar, did you listen to the song? It's really dreadful, barely anything of notice (vocals, production, message depth). It's coffee shop music

OT: nothing major so far, I guess the country haters really wanted Slim Pickings sniped out, because it was quite cute

Oh wait I take my "nothing major" comment back. Not Hello Goodbye out already! RIP

This is my "brat but it's completely different..." Hello goodbye (feat. Ayumi Hamasaki) :smitten:

I think Im late to the first round of the party, and first of all, Kaleidoscope is already gone?? that's one of the best songs on the album tho :psyduck:

Good job with the design. I like it :smitten2:

Most of these are welcome exits. Picture You deserved a slightly higher placement, one of Chappell's better ballads.

Sharpest Tool was done very dirty, probably the most Emails I Can't Send coded track of the album which is why I'm partial to it.

Hello Goodbye and No Simulation were kinda robbed but the rest were all fillers :clap3:
