If you're unfamiliar with rates and how they work, skip to the bottom and read the rules first!

2024 was definitely an exciting year for popheads everywhere. Going into this year we had plenty to look forward to, with many of us anticipating music from our old reliable pop divas - Ariana's return, the next entry in Beyoncé's album trilogy, murmurs of new Lady Gaga and Katy Perry projects being underway, and Taylor... well, she never actually left! This was going to be like 2016 all over again! We figured that we would be hopping from huge pop era to huge pop era, one after another. And that much was true! ...just not at all in the way that we expected.

You see, in between sessions of vibing to eternal sunshine, tapping our feet to Cowboy Carter, and anticipating The Tortured Poet's Department, something unusual happened. Underneath our noses, radio started playing something new. Something we hadn't counted on. It was only April, but it was already becoming clear that 2024 wasn't going to be the year of the old school. 2024 was going to be a fresh one, a year where new stars were made and old ones reinvented. A year where niche acts became household names and new pillars rose in the pop pantheon. Come summertime and the popular conversation wasn't being ruled by Taylor Swift or Beyoncé as expected, but instead by exciting new acts (and some old ones too).

So, in honor of one of the most brilliant years in recent pop music, let's hold a little rating game. Let's meet the Class of '24, shall we?

The one-time Disney Channel star finally made the jump from niche internet pop girl to full-blown pop star this year. Sabrina had already been on something of an incline thanks to minor hits like "Nonsense" and "Feather", but it was this year's "Espresso" that was her true breakout moment. To see somebody become a star virtually overnight was quite the head turner. Sabrina didn't rest on her laurels either, she made savvy and clever moves with her "Short n' Sweet" campaign to keep momentum going. This year saw Miss Carpenter move from strength to strength, breaking chart records at home and abroad and proving her natural pop instincts. She's left quite the impression indeed, leaving several of the old-guard divas in her wake.

And really, how often do we get to see such a rapid rise in popularity these days?

chap-title.png

...Well, according to this rate it's not that rare at all!

Sabrina's partner in her escape from the Khia Asylum, Chappell Roan, was even more of a niche act. A bombastic pop singer who had struggled to make it in the industry, even being dropped by her label at one point. If Sabrina's rise to popularity was dizzying, then Chappell's was meteoric. Sometimes the stars just align perfectly, with supporting slots and festival performances creating a buzz around Chappell that positively exploded upon the release of her "Good Luck, Babe!" single. People couldn't get enough of her unabashedly queer and theatrical ways, and Chappell's previously obscure 2023 debut album became the year's surprise breakout hit. She's a sometimes polarizing figure, but has been a great addition to the occasionally sterile modern pop scene.

Of course, not all of the girls were unknowns. Charli XCX, a critic's favorite popgirl, had already enjoyed a long and impressive career before 2024. Over a decade of music, during which she had done it all - going from obscure Tumblr girl, to Billboard-topping hook girl, and then experimental troublemaker... I truly thought we had seen it all from Charli. She came into 2024 just doing her own thing, owning her insufferable genius in a surprisingly candid manner. The album title speaks for itself, no?

And, well... as I said, sometimes the stars just align. A combination of great word of mouth, a heavy helping of memes, and some high-profile collabs catapulted Charli's eighth studio album into a culture-leading movement. She was mainstream in a way that she never had been, not even during her "Sucker" era. Charli's brat summer was inescapable, even for old folks who had never even heard of an XCX. And although Kamala Harris would probably like to forget about it, the rest of us will surely remember our brat summer for a long time to come.

...That's it, right? The three inarguable breakout stars of 2024, all brought together. What else are we waiting for?

Yo? What's that sound...?

A surprise? Please welcome the rate's wildcard, Tinashe!

An ATRL favorite for sure, but can she compete with the three ladies above? Last year's "BB/ANG3L" album made very little noise and it seemed that this year's sequel was bound for the same fate. It did kind of meet it, but let's not go there. Lead single "Nasty" became a surprise hit thanks to TikTok trends and gave Miss Nashe her highest charting song in a decade. Though she was unable to turn that momentum into a full campaign in the same way as Sabrina or Chappell, it was a full-circle moment to see an oftentimes neglected artist get some flowers this year. People who hadn't heard a Tinashe song since 2 On were bopping! Can the underdog score a win underneath the nose of the titans?

That's our roster, the class of 2024. I know you're already pretty acquainted with most of them, but take some time to familiarize yourself once more.

RULES

1. Score every song on the list below from 0 - 10.

2. You may assign a single song with the elusive score of 11.

3. Send a complete list of scores to my inbox before December 29th, 2024.

4. No trolling. You can't send a ballot in which you give one artist all 10's, and another all 0's. Rate honestly!

5. We're only rating the base album versions of each song. No remixes for Charli!

6. Have fun or whatever, hehe.

Here's a PM-friendly list of songs for you to rate.

"Nasty" peaked at 61 and went #1 on one format. "Water" peaked at 7, went #1 on several formats, and won a Grammy.

Quantum Baby peaked at 199.

Tyla peaked at 24.

If Tyla doesn't belong here, Tinashe absolutely does not either. :michael:

Water feels like a 2023 song to me, I think it was only the US where it peaked in 2024

Best to look at Tinashe's presence here as less of "robbing someone else of a place" and instead as a nice bonus to join the other three. There's lots of pop girl rates in the pipeline anyway, Tyla and Tate McRae and all those ladies will be represented in future jaunts I'm pretty sure.

Hey bestie, you know I'm in.

One incredible album, one great album, one good album with a mix of highs and lows, and one album.......... that's overrated :fan:
