Enrique523 Posted August 12 Posted August 12 (edited) Wait... NRO was NOT the lead single of the Smile album initially? I'm... only learning that now and i'm baffled. Why would they release a solid song like that and NOT have an album ready? And it was only put on the album later because plans were changed? And Harleys was not immediately a cute hit, it only became viral later by pure luck? Wow her career is even more of a mess than i initially thought. I always thought people were exaggerating how bad the Smile era went but i get it now Edited August 12 by Enrique523 1 1 1

The whole aesthetic of these songs were something like a boho/hippie chic, nothing like the circus/clown thing that Smile went. The rumor said that, since any of them became an instant hit, the "project" of the album that she was building with these songs changed and then Smile happened. Since any of the Smile singles achieved success neither, they included the three songs on the tracklist. But I don't know id it's true. 3 1
Sabrina Carpenter Posted August 12 Posted August 12 wait idg why users are reposting that Taylor picture? is it supposed to be a drag to use one of the most successful artist of all time in a thread about charts

I didn't follow the Smile era back then so i had no idea about any of this. This is truly a bigger disaster than i thought, i thought the Smile era did ok immediately, i had NO IDEA it was out of pure luck than she ended up with decent streaming numbers for 2 songs. 2 hours ago, Sabrina Carpenter said: wait idg why users are reposting that Taylor picture? is it supposed to be a drag to use one of the most successful artist of all time in a thread about charts Right? NEVER talk about Taylor when it comes to charts and success, you're gonna lose every time 2
Popular Post Sannie Posted August 12 Popular Post Posted August 12 At this point, she needs to shave her head and dye her hair back to blonde. She was performing better when she looked like that. Might as well give it a try. 22

Also Smile was more successful overall than Witness, so she even revived a bit. And comparing pure sales of someone who debuted in the 80s to someone who started in 2008 is really not smart. also the 2000s and 2010s are two seperate decades. That's the whole point: delusion. Her fans were delusional and my first post was saying to think she was once called the female MJ is wild. He never flopped as hard as she did, and did so after almost 25 years, not 5. 1

Was there anything disingenuous about these album campaigns, or are only Perry's motives brought into question? Comparing Katy Perry, a former MPG, to brand new or indie pop girls who have to build their audiences with singles as they try to get over the huge hurdle of releasing a mainstream debut album... oh I have to laugh Katy fans will really cling to anything at this point! 4 2 1 2

Popular Post Axolotl Posted August 12 Popular Post Posted August 12 I can't believe the revisionist history here with Smile. That album BOMBED even harder than Witness, still only certified Gold () after more than four years, had a tacked on streaming hit (NRO) just to make the album stats look better, and left the BB200 in a month -- A MONTH. 17

I loved NRO and HIH and would love an album filled tracks like these. And they aren't produced by certain someone

That album BOMBED even harder than Witness, still only certified Gold () after more than four years, had a tacked on streaming hit (NRO) just to make the album stats look better, and left the BB200 in a month -- A MONTH. Smile, the album, was a flop of the Lotus / Charmbracelet category; a safe, quiet album released after a career-ending bomb that makes zero noise and only manages to take the artist away from being a punching bag / laughing stock and make them irrelevant and harmless. Smile, the overall era, was ok. NRO, Harleys, 365, Daisies, WIG were all great palette cleansers and built up some goodwill for her. Not from the mainstream world, who probably hasn't heard of any of them, but from the pop sphere. A lot of us actually liked those songs and, as a result, liked her. At the end of the Smile era, Katy was as unsuccessful as she was when the Hey Hey Hey video closed the Witness trainwreck, but she was in a different, much more salvagable place. She wasn't embarrassing or uncool or pathetic. She was just not successful. The stark difference between the reaction to her 2022 SNL vs. 2017 alone... She could have launched herself back from that place; she just completely fumbled it. If the new era had better music by any other producer, I do think it could have been successful and her 2019-2022 run would be recognized as a stepping stone for that. But... alas 6 2

Kats will 100% lose any right to talk about "relying on collabs from more relevant artists for a hit" if Gimme Gimme somehow manages to be a hit (and by "hit" I mean doing better than top 50 on BB100). Not like they had any right in the first place considering she's put out 11 collabs as singles post-Dark Horse, but anyway
