So he's definitely not phoning it in. This is genuinely the best he can do.

Then wtf happened? This is the same person that wrote and produced Nothing in This World??

It's been 2 decades since then. Happened the same thing that happened to Katy who back in 2008 or so she had songs like Thinking of You written by her and fast forward to present day, she co-writes with other 5 people: "sexy confident, so intelligent".

Katy is the only high profile popstar that would be willing to openly work with Luke. This was not only supposed to be Katy's comeback, it was also supposed to be his; a chance to be re-instated as a major mainstream pop producer that everyone can work with, no longer lurking in the shadows waiting for a female rapper to seek a crossover hit or for Kim Petras to happen. So he's definitely not phoning it in. This is genuinely the best he can do.

And that's why Lukasz Gottwald is a talentless PANNED hack!

She should stop releasing music, and focus on makeup brands instead.

In the streaming era initial chart runs are not overly important.

In the long run in the US Smile is certified GOLD and has 4 certified songs, 1 platinum and 3 gold, with HIH also elegible for platinum.

Some pop girl releases which did better on release have less.

How did she go from quality tracks like Never Really Over and Harleys in Hawaii to WW and Lifetimes? smh

This is Smile era all over again. They didn't say NRO was the lead because they were expecting for something to hit harder, then threw Small Talk, HIH, NWW, Daisies and once they saw each release kept flopping harder they just said 'well, maybe NRO was the real lead after all' :ryan3:

Stop inventing. Smile album only happened because of Covid. When NRO. ST and HIH were released there was no album in the works.

Obviously when the album was released, NRO was always going to be on it. IT was a decent sized solo hit, why would she not add it ?

Why argue with people that think Never Worn White was a single? Worms for brains

Wow so this is really it… it's worse than everyone even thought was possible.  The album release thread is basically going to be a funeral.

The Smile slander in here, in comparison to this current era it was fine. Harleys in Hawaii remains one of her best AC tracks.

she should have just organised a writing camp like rihanna used to do back in the days... many decent songs could have come out of it. Its really sad that she went to dr luke hoping for hits but still serving OUT OUT in every country across the globe.

I am pretty sure the one liner brief for this album was recreate the teenage dream magic. But that doesn't mean literally recreate B sides from that era. Times have changed and Katy doesn't have a loyal album buying base unlike some others who she has had bad blood  with

So you agree they only added NRO to the album because it was a decent hit compared to the flop the other songs were? Great :giraffe:

She really is going to flop until the end and then repeat it isn't she?

I've never understood this interpretation. It falls flat as soon as you take into account that "Harleys In Hawaii" was also included in the standard album, despite performing worse than "Small Talk" at the time of Smile's release, yet the latter track was reserved for bonus editions of the album. This is because there was no album yet conceptualised in 2019, and only the tracks that ended up fitting the direction Katy was going for made the standard track list. Other would-be album tracks were also either scrapped or given the bonus track treatment ("High On Your Supply") for this very reason. Nothing more.

NRO was released less than a year prior to "Daisies", mind you. The trend of releasing a string of singles eventually culminating in an album is something we've seen a plethora of artists do over the past decade, from the likes of Dua Lipa and Zara Larsson with their mainstream debuts, to less mainstream pop artists like Caroline Polachek's Desire, I Want to Turn Into You. Even ATRL's current favourite girlie Chappell Roan's The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess is mainly comprised of a string of singles recorded and released between 2020-2022. Was there anything disingenuous about these album campaigns, or are only Perry's motives brought into question?

As far as "Lifetimes" is concerned, it's really no surprise that it's performing poorly. It is an unremarkable song and does not stand well enough on its own to overcome the abundance of negative publicity working with Dr. Luke on this project has brought her way in droves. If I were on her team, I'd suggest they pull the pin on this album campaign akin to Kim Petras' Problématique. It's a lot easier to move on from a couple of dud singles than it is to sweep an entire underperforming album under the rug. More than anything though, the music just isn't strong enough to warrant this collaboration. 143 is going to be DOA, and a career misfire of epic proportions.
