And you, nor SNL, speaks for those students as a whole either. Which would be fine in there weren't a bunch of white/non-black folks representing what black people are thinking. If we could all agree to stop representing our own individual interpretations of black people as a whole (including Kassi), that would be the best solutions. However, if we are going to give passes to non-black people speaking on behalf of black folk, then Kassi has every right to say what he wants. Same applies to other minorities.
Kassi Posted May 16 Posted May 16 Ya'll it's not that serious. The original NYT article was an analysis of the relative quietness on HBCU campuses compared to PWIs. I found it interesting cause it's true that black people move differently around cultural issues. It also happened to coincide with the SNL skit (+ all of those reaffirming comments on the video) and what the people in my own life have been saying. No one is claiming to speak for all black people's opinions on this conflict — like the comments on the Shaderoom IG are pretty diverse w/ a pro-Palestine lean. We're just recognizing the prevailing attitudes and cultural sentiment around disrupting educational institutions.
Kassi Posted May 16 Posted May 16 There's also an emerging resentment among black youth of being used as the mule for every other group's liberation struggles, but that's a conversation for a different thread. Aside from baseline advocacy in the form of legal and sanctioned protest, I wouldn't expect to see anything wild like encampments or campus building break-ins at these black institutions. 1

Communion Posted May 21 Posted May 21 Wonder how these students will be voting in November in a key swing state.
Kassi Posted May 23 Posted May 23 Harvard protestors are not getting their degrees (for now) it seems.
LIT Posted May 31 Author Posted May 31 Despite the student protest movement getting its start in the U.S., European universities have shown far more receptiveness to calls for divestment than any American universities. I suppose that's not very surprising? 1
