Relampago. Posted May 28 Posted May 28 2 hours ago, Cain said: Well personally I never thought Dua needed to make more personal music, but what she does need to do if she wants to stay successful is just show more personality. If you listen to a pop album by Billie or Olivia or hell even Taylor and you have no clue who they are or who they've dated then those songs are just as 'personal' as on any other pop album, the only difference is with those artists people are able to project what they know of said artists onto the music People can't do that with Dua because they don't know anything about her And a big reason Rih was also successful is because people could also do that with her music "oh is this song about Ch**s? is that about Drake?" Just like they do with Taylor or Selena It sucks that that's the way it works for women in the industry but it does boost engagement Yeah.. but to be honest I just don't think she's that type of girl. She's smart, kindhearted, well-adjusted and generally just a stand-up gal. What do you even do with that She's kinda an ideal person but people HATE perfection (unless you have Beyonce-level talent) so not a lot of people are going to latch onto her book reviews and CEO sit down interviews. She really should lean into a f*** working type of attitude and just basically be more outspoken politically and socially. She really could be a girl boss type of icon, but she just needs to embrace that alot more openly. We were on the cusp with FN (even with New Rules's MV tbh) then it fell off out of nowhere.
Riot Posted May 28 Posted May 28 I don't know if it has already been discussed, but do you think that there's a possibility that the initial idea of making an entire trip-hop inspired album was scrapped for a more traditional pop one? Or was Dua just lying and doing her best SZA impersonation? 1
mike_int Posted May 28 Posted May 28 The thing is "personality" of pop/rap stars these days is based on beefs against each other or exploiting personal relationships. What do we know about Taylor except she has/had beef with Kanye,Kim,Katy,Scooter Braut .... plus all her ex-boyfriends and the current PR relationship is just a cherry on top Selena is playing victim card ever since she broke up with Justin. Ariana personality in media is basically her dating, marrying, divorcing etc. Then you have rappers Nicki vs. Cardi vs. Megan vs. whoever The Drake vs Kendric and who know else ... Miley and her divorce. Sabrina is suddenly dating the guy from Saltburn, another PR relationship. Its all based on beefs and personal relationships. General public wants sensations, they dont really care about the real person these stars are. Dua is too smart for that and therefore not interesting enough for people who are used to stars being show ponies. 5 2
tjspy Posted May 28 Posted May 28 I don't know much or want to know anything about the singers personalities (also bc I'm lazy) and I tend to focus mostly on the music. Perhaps that's why I'm a stan, her music is that good
Moonbeam Posted May 28 Posted May 28 I'm happy Dua is releasing what she wants. I really like the album quite a bit. I would far rather she release what she'd like rather than tailgate other successful artists who are far less interesting, IMO. 1
Cloudy Posted May 28 Posted May 28 She just needs better material, better promotion and visuals. Most people don't even know the lyrics or care aboutvthe content of the song. It was the case for Rihanna and many others. Imo she really needed to switch it up just loke Rihanna has always done to keep things interesting. She suffered from the Katy syndrome, more of the same but not nearly as good as what was her mágnum opus (TF = FN). People were perched to see what she would do and when they saw it was a bit more of the same but undercooked most interest. That to me is the big flaw this era. She needed to break the mold and she went safe and redundant and that has really taken a hit on her commercial performance. She really needed her 'Loose' moment with a complete different style and I think she would have smashed easily. That being said I like the material but yeah could have been better, but it lacks personality, not in the lyrics but in the delivery. It lacks adlibs, switch ups, etc. She better not deliver the same for DL4. 2 1
Cain Posted May 28 Posted May 28 The least she could've done is serve looks this era… but she decided to become boring there too 9 3 2

Abracadabra Posted May 28 Posted May 28 I don't buy this "people don't know her personality" reason. They didn't during FN either and yet that still smashed. 1
