In fact they might've planned to leave him alive for a couple of months too. I don't think Israel had much control over the timing. It sounds like a regular patrol, in this case a training unit, found him by chance. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/10/18/how-was-yahya-sinwar-killed-what-we-know-so-far Quote At some point between 2pm and 3pm on Wednesday, a patrol from the Bislach Brigade training unit of the Israeli army was conducting searches of the Tal as-Sultan neighbourhood in Rafah. When he fought back, they bought in tanks and other heavy weapons. So much for the claims that he Sinwar was hiding in a tunnel surrounded by hostages used as human shields. Quote In February, Israeli officials said Sinwar was hiding in Hamas's tunnels, surrounding himself with captives who were being used as human shields, according to the Washington Post. Quote Israeli soldiers searched the vicinity of where Sinwar died fighting but found no captives being used as human shields. 1
ClashAndBurn Posted October 19 Posted October 19 They truly do believe this. It wasn't a slip of the tongue. Israel has "the right" to target civilians. 2
Letemtalk Posted October 20 Posted October 20 Is any US or other western media running this story which has been published in Haaretz - Israel's oldest newspaper? I'm sure we knew this anyway, but this appears to confirm that Netanyahu acted to sabotage any hostage deal. You can read it on an archive site here Haaretz archive.is - new-evidence-reveals-netanyahus-relentless-efforts-to-block-hostage-deal-report-shows This is from an earlier article from March 28, 2024. https://archive.is/uG0iL Quote For now, Israel needs Sinwar for any potential hostage deal. He's the one who decides how things move forward, not the Hamas leaders abroad, certainly not the ones in Qatar. Quote If Sinwar dies, Israel may find itself without anyone capable of negotiating for Hamas, hindering the already small chances for a deal exchanging the hostages for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. 1

There is only the framing that Hamas has refused to release the hostages and Hamas don't want a deal, only more death and destruction. 1

Reflektor Posted October 31 Posted October 31 Excellent interview with UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine Francesca Albanese who have a barn burner at the UN yesterday delivering her report on Gaza. She also comments on US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield's charge that she is anti-semetic, which she called "desperate." Her meeting with Congress this week was canceled because of this. I've been following her work for months and find her to be a necessary, educated and intelligent voice who is able to make international law easy to understand. Also, read her report "Genocide as colonial erasure," here: https://documents.un.org/doc/undoc/gen/n24/279/68/pdf/n2427968.pdf
