Whitney (for example) wasn’t a lyricist, yet she comfortably ranks among the best musical minds to ever exist. An unparalleled interpreter of song. Bob Dylan has never had notable singing talent, but he, too, ranks among the splendid forces in music. He changed the way that people approach songwriting as a whole. Whitney was only acclaimed after she passed away .. and no she’s not musical mega mind when she’s just singing words written by others u may call her a recording artist and perhaps one of best recording artist but she ain’t a musician while yes bob dylan even though you claim is not a notable singer because u only have been exposed one kind of “female diva mega vocalist who belts” so u wont see magic in his voice is a musician deserving of praise
suburbannature Posted January 6 Posted January 6 My fave who mastered both of these. Vocal stack queen and songwriting legend
Cleanromantic Posted January 6 Posted January 6 Lyrics/ melodies so songwriting. Great vocalists are dime a dozen. Just look at how many people go on talent shows every year and how many of them actually make it big. The majority of them can sing most pop girls under the table yet once they leave they fade cause they have nothing interesting to say/ can't share their perspective.
40000000000000 Posted January 6 Posted January 6 (edited) it's 2024 and people are still pretending taylor's same old "you did x y and z, i was innocent and lonely!" songwriting is some groundbreaking lyricism expert my ass. nothing she does is above mediocre. i prefer songwriting over vocal power. but taylor swift is definitely not somebody i would use as an example of that. Whitney was acclaimed for the entirety of her career, personal life be damned. She was a singer. Singing is storytelling. She was a musical mastermind because of her singing; the way that she interpreted song. Your inability to understand that singers are musicians points to you not really understanding singing as an art form. Bob Dylan is universally understood to not have much going for him in the way of vocal talent. I wasn’t insulting him. Edited January 6 by LikeATattoo
