He thought he did something here but it’s lame af to say out loud you only did a massive movie most directors would kill to have the opportunity to ever have for a money grab. Honey, we could tell you only did that last horrible Thor movie for the money because it showed in that shite script. The Doja of movie directors. Also he’s only saying this because Marvel isn’t cool anymore. He’s shallow and lacks appreciation.

Sick of art creators thinking admitting they only do certain things in money in hindsight is admirable. Helps explain why the state of modern entertainment is so generally terrible rn.

I doubt any of the indie directors they pick ever dreamed about doing a movie with cgi heroes flying around in Halloween costumes, they do it for the paycheck and profile boost. That said, I'm surprised he actually came out and said it, I didn't expect him to bite the hand that feeds.

Okay but like, isn't this generally a kind of shared consensus? :deadbanana: Not just for directors but the actors, too. Marvel (and Disney as a whole to an extent, look at how they dropped Pixar like a hot potato once they started acquiring more affiliates) don't seem like brilliant long-term collaborators unless you're in good tidings behind the scenes with high-up company execs. I'm pretty sure a lot of these actors and directors signed on for the guarantee of a large sum. A cinematic Marvel project actually flopping or at least not being worth your while for the initial pay check is a rarity in 2023. Their fanbase is too solid.

"But I was poor and I’d just had a second child, and I thought, ‘You know what, this would be a great opportunity to feed these children.'"

I think he should be electrocuted for saying this tbh :coffee2:

i'm surprised so many people are shocked by this. i always assumed that most people (both cast and crew) do marvel films because the check is good. let's face it, working on a marvel film is probably boring as hell as most of the movie is finished with CGI, so the actors and crew members are mostly just running around trying to get as many shots a day as possible with very little actual acting.

that's not a dig at the movies per se, that kind of entertainment has its rightful place in cinema, but i don't think most people want to be actors or directors so that they can make a marvel blockbuster. the check is simply too big to refuse though. other marvel actors have complained about this exact thing in the past, so not sure why everyone suddenly thinks taika waititi is the villain.

also, people do this in other professions all the time. sometimes you take up work you don't care for just to make some quick money. it's not that deep.

i agree with the last point, but that's not the director's fault. blame studio execs, they were going to make the movie regardless of if taika had said yes or no. marvel films are fueled by a massive corporate machine, one director has exactly 0 say in which films are going to get made.

Curious if the incels who ripped Rachel Zegler apart for saying the same thing are going to direct that same level of vitriol at him :celestial5:

For clarity, no one deserves that level of vitriol directed at them. I'm just curious if the incels are going to be consistent :celestial5:

Of course not. Taika is a p*nis haver.

On the one hand, it's amusing to see big names turning on Marvel :toofunny2:

On the other, this does not bode well for his SW movie... :rip:

Saying he needed the money to feed his children is a bit over dramatic. I'm sure he would have had many other offers, it's just this one could buy him mansions and a allow him to live an expensive lifestyle as well as getting a massive boost in his public profile.

Saying this only makes him look like more of a sellout than if he'd stood by the work and said nothing derogatory.

Maybe so but he's still untalented and the movie was horrendous even for Marvel's standards

The truth is Taika, you wanted to be a rich Hollywood director.

And he said that??? He only did them for money and once he got it he's telling the truth, he is owning his **** by being real instead of lying to make marvel fans happy :heart2:

tbf i remember him saying this after thor: ragnarok too but no one paid attention back then.

I don't think anyone who works with Marvel does it for artistry :rip: their movies are basic af.

i mean i only saw Jojo Rabbit and if it's his best artistic effort i can't really say i care to see much more.

His movie was fun, that’s all it was :dies: y’all need to get over it. It was not that serious

The way everybody and their grandma's perception of the MCU switched so quickly surprises me :deadbanana: I always thought it would be a gradual decline for at least another decade, not a complete nosedive within just a few years after their biggest peak

Even the kids and teens in the 2010s that are all grown up now are disowning superhero movies in favor of "rEaL cInEmA" which is so cringe not cause of the change in tastes which is normal ofc but because they're shitting on Marvel now that it's uncool to like them, so phony :rip:

I just now Kevin is writing names, and checking them twice, because when the X-Men saga comes out you know Miss Waititi will be back begging to be in the director's seat.

My point is he’s acting like he was above Marvel at that time, which he definitely was not. His filmography wasn’t that acclaimed , the MCU was doing great critically as well as commercially, and it was greatly beneficial at the time for your name to be attached to Marvel. Now that it’s not and he’s not being invited back does he switch up
