Reginald Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 People crave entertainment value I'm not a fan of either, but Taylor has absolutely overshadowed Olivia this year. Same demographic, and one is way more interesting than the other. 1
shookspeare Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 it's doesn't make any sense to me, BIR was literally the first time I found her at all interesting 1 1
Virtual_Insanity Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 She was never going to serve longevity. She is already poised to serve Smile numbers with her next album. 1
VioletsandRoses Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 The aesthetic and music is way too similar to sour. People also seem to prefer her ballads over the Avril Lavigne knock offs.
Solaria Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 Anything that would have come after Sour would have paled in comparison, it was just too big of a debut. I agree that it’s an underperformance, but it’s about longevity in the streaming era. We don’t know what this album’s run is gonna look like in about a year. I mean Billie’s HTE rollout was terrible but that’s still charting, so who knows what’ll happen to GUTS. 1
Ivan_brit Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 & still one of the biggest Female albums of 2023 so don’t get that brave
TYMPS Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 what happened was she is not that interesting so we are not that interested 1
ninetales Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 She is and will be a one hit era wonder. The GP just suddenly lost interest in her and moved on. I always thought she was the "new" legit MPG until GUTS failed to have atleast 1/8 success of SOUR.
Theluckyone Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 She still did well, GUTS era is still successful with a hot 100 #1 and critical acclaim / good sales. Not every era needs to hit hard like sour. She could easily have another multi platinum smash album in the future.
Toxicity. Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 Taylor mania is an all time high this year and they have a lot of overlap
tupperware Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 she came back with a mostly mid album. hyperbolic reviews can't change that, unfortunately. 2
Bentley Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 (edited) No Joshua, no streams or sales Edited November 4, 2023 by Bentley 1

Gaga's most critically acclaimed album on MC is Chromatica and Midnights is Taylor's most acclaimed album after Folklore/Evermore and we all know how both of those albums are viewed on here. Same with Adele's 30. ATRL's taste = basic, we been knew
skizzo Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 Bad Idea Right? was a terrible single choice tbh 1

Machete Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 On a serious note, I am not shocked GUTS is doing bad. I think there are 3 main reasons why the big sophomore slump. 1. Despite SOUR being a mega-smash, Olivia never established a NAME for herself. A big mistake was dropping absolutely nothing after SOUR's May 2021 release. No droplet, no feature, no soundtrack single, she just SOUR rot as her only music for TWO YEARS. That is unheard of for pop girls, especially in Gen Z quick consumption era. Only bigger wait between debut and some type of music I can think of is 19 to 21 (and 19 wasn't out of the gate smash). 2. I also think the album's aesthetics (and to a lesser degree sound) being a copy-paste of SOUR made its announcement and GP anticipation very muted. Not to bring her up cause of the constant comparisons, but I do think Taylor Swift has really brought the awareness of "eras" to locals. They now expect every album to have its own distinct imagery and vibe, GUTS isn't that. 3. Finally, I think the rock sound of the singles she pushed was a massive misstep commercially. They are essentially g4u clones and g4u ended up with a bad taste in the GP's mouth. It was mocked alongside its multiple clones (abcdefu, the other corny TikTok songs) and is now the SOUR single doing the least amount of streams daily despite it at one point being the biggest. The top performing SOUR songs are all ballads/mid-tempos (Deja Vu) which GUTS is very little-on and the ones there are not standouts. 6
grAntVRIL Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 fad loved the album tho. its better than debut
FailSafe Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 Bad Idea killed the Era's momentum. Love Id Embarrassing should've been then second single
Billionaire Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 (edited) People are bringing up Billie but she suffered from overexposure, a bad rollout, drastic image change, a hate train, etc....Olivia had none of that (GUTS was practically the opposite of HTE's rollout from the low media exposure post-SOUR era to the short rollout) and it's still pulling similar numbers. There's no reason why the gap between HTE's 7th week and GUTS' 7th week should be less than 10k when we were all promised that this would STOMP on it commercially. The album is great but the reality is that her team just sucks (not new for Interscope) and she should've released earlier before Taylor took over this year as many of her stans are also Swifties who would choose Taylor over anyone else anyday. eli's_rhythm Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 The rollout has been too samey after Sour, and she doesn’t have a particular hook as an artist. Her writing style and aesthetic have been done before. If she had something interesting to say, or a really unique look/sound (Billie), she’d have more immediate staying power. 1
