IBeMe Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 Too soon to write Houdini off yall Wait until like mid February. That said, she is to blame for not making this more eventful tbh. It's her comeback lead single to launch a new era. I get she may want to save the promo for when the song is peaking but again, fans need to associate the music to performances and visuals mentally. It's a part of the experience for the type of fan base she has actively cultivated aka unapologetically pop leaning gays and girls. I get the feeling she may be a little burnt out....and I do hope she enjoys the holidays and takes it easy but if she's not going to really GIVE us things to devour that are associated to the lead single then she better go all out once holiday season is done. 1

This year it felt like a lot of artists did and I have no idea. I was thinking maybe it's because of the strike. Maybe labels were waiting for the strikes to end so their artists could perform on SNL and other talks shows but usually only someone like Adele can release a single this time of year and do great because us Americans like to listen to Holiday music literally the day after Halloween ends until January. Dua's going to be fine though and the single is great. Given the media landscape of the US compared to many other countries ( ie a lack relative of national or near national radio stations as is the case in say Europe) it means it is sort of way out of step with most of the rest of the world in how radio works and responsiveness.. Ie in Europe you have a pretty accelerated take up by national or near national stations whereas in the US it moves at glacial fragmented pace. Added to this, as you say is Xmas. Now when dinosaurs roamed the Earth (I’m talking decades ago) record companies could allow for this by just treating the US as a separate “box” ABBA for instance we’re always a single “behind” in the US v Europe, ie months. None of that is remotely possible in a digital world of course, so you have this weird dichotomy of Spotify etc being much more reactive in Europe/Much of the rest of the World, whilst the huge US supertanker slowly alters course miles behind. This is not intended as a dig at the US, it’s just the way it is. So unless you have a rabid base ready to devour anything you put out regardless, day one, it’s all relatively slow. Helps of course if you can “tik tokify” something and maybe a trick or two was missed there regarding Houdini. Barring a total nose five tank, a bit of patience all round would help given the above. 1

All of this. She's basically doing Britney Jean sized promo right now (of course I know she got playlists, but we need PERFORMANCES) Edited November 14, 2023 by BrokenMachine 1
GoodGuyGoneGhetto Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 I- It’s not looking the greatest right now. I’ll just sit and wait until march before I truly say anything.
Tistotal Posted November 15, 2023 Posted November 15, 2023 I don't know what's worse, if people laughing at this because it's only 4M on spotify (lol) or Dua stans saying this is going to peak in some months, what if not just listen to this bop and let it be 1
makeme Posted November 15, 2023 Posted November 15, 2023 I keep playing this it’s already #7 on my spotify On Repeat playlist
Chris Posted November 15, 2023 Posted November 15, 2023 Does anyone hear a little bit of Thriller (MJ) in this or am I hearing things?
Chris Posted November 15, 2023 Posted November 15, 2023 Not this automatically becoming my favorite Dua Lipa song.

LanaXtinaFan Posted November 15, 2023 Posted November 15, 2023 Ya know, I’m sorry, but after listening to this song again there is no way this is not going to smash. I played this to death when it dropped and kinda got tired of it quickly. But something just clicked again. The sorcery! 5

CroNich Posted November 15, 2023 Posted November 15, 2023 The meltdowns over what is already a hit Its literally been less than a week. Just let the art speak for itself. Its more important than chart success anyway. 1
perfectillusion204 Posted November 15, 2023 Posted November 15, 2023 I have a feeling they’re not gonna push this after the holidays tbh, unless it becomes a natural hit. I know the EMA performance got cancelled and it was supposedly going to be Training Season. So I have the feeling if they want to premiere that song with a live performance, there’s a reason for it. It’s either THE smash of the album, or it’s risky in some way/shape/form. And I’m guessing it would be released Feb 1 or 2, right before the Grammys live premiere
austriamonster Posted November 15, 2023 Posted November 15, 2023 (edited) AM Austria overall: 7. Houdini (+1) *new peak* Edited November 15, 2023 by austriamonster

Not like a copy or anything, but very evocative of Thriller. Anyways I still really like this, but I'm going to say it's not going to hit the way she wants it to. A few top tens around the world, but I think it will perform more like "Sweetest Pie" than DSN/Levitating. Not a disaster at all, but a second single should be ready to go.
Dula Peep Posted November 15, 2023 Posted November 15, 2023 Kinda living for the meltdowns (mostly the ODH) right now
Cloudy Posted November 15, 2023 Posted November 15, 2023 I will admit the song lacks a strong punch, an explosive chorus. It's pretty subdued for a comeback lead single, but I still think it will perform moderately well. All I care is about enjoying the music
DemnisBreezy Posted November 15, 2023 Posted November 15, 2023 Infectious bop. It will be minimum a cute hit in the US but it will surely be all over Europe from January til April

I think they’re following the Flowers model, because January usually doesn’t have any big releases and people want something to stream when the holiday songs have worn off. I think because her team was aware her songs take some time to grow they released it earlier with the intention of it really picking up steam in Q1 2024 2
KarmaCat Posted November 15, 2023 Posted November 15, 2023 Lol as if this ain’t going to smash. This is Dua Lipa ya’ll, her label will do everything they can to push this. And the song is good enough to catch on the public later on. I remember hearing Levitating on the radio and being flabbergasted why it wasn’t smashing harder during its initial run ‘cause it was just so good - then came the Grammys performance and the whole world woke up to the song. The GP will latch on this sooner or later. 1
