It's time for the dreaded creative round! Thank you @Gateau for crafting this exciting new challenge for us!

The theme for Round 11 is...

Making The Band!

This round, you will be channeling your Hollywood talent scout skills by creating the ultimate music group. You will select 5 artists that you believe blend together to create a cohesive group. One wildcard requirement is that your group must be mixed gender! We will not accept an entry with 5 female artists.

Here's what you will have to submit in a single document - please do not send us a million pieces through DM!

  • Roster - This group will consist of 5 solo artists (specify during which age/era - for example, you would say "90s Madonna" instead of just "Madonna")
  • Musical Direction - Please submit a Spotify playlist of 3-5 songs to represent what an era of the band would sound like. What kind of genre/production/vibe would your group go for? These songs don't necessarily have to be from the artists in the group, but it should make immediate sense that your group could theoretically create songs like this.
  • Branding/Concept - The visuals are a huge selling point of any artist. Choose 5-7 images to create a moodboard. These images do not have to be directly from these artists' work. They must represent the group's aesthetic concept (example - for a biblical concept, you would choose images of a garden and an apple). AI Generators and Google Images are your best friend for this component. Graphics experience is not needed.
  • Short Essay - Write 1-2 paragraphs explaining the idea/vision behind the group. What is the branding and music all about? Why did you select these artists to put together? Do they bring specific talents to the band?

The entries will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Artist Selection (5/20 points): Does it make sense that these artists would create music together? Did you choose the right eras for the artists in question?
    • IMPORTANT REMINDER: Just because artists are popular and cover a similar genre does not necessarily mean they would be a good fit. For example: Ariana, Miley, and Lana teamed up to create 'Don't Call Me Angel'. However, it was immediately clear that their vocals and styles completely clashed. None of it made sense and they all sort of brought each other down. Your objective is to create a golden combination, giving each person a designated role on the team.
  • Originality (4/20 points): Although things need to be cohesive, they shouldn't be too expected. This should be a group that feels like a breath of fresh air.
  • Musical Direction (5/20 points): Did the songs chosen make sense for the artists in the group? Do they make for a cohesive era?
  • Aesthetics (3/20 points): Is the visual concept clear, concise, and creative? Is it marketable?
  • Written Portion (3/20 points): In your short essay, did you sell the judges on the idea behind the group? The judges will consider whether they would buy the group's album / watch performances or videos / stream their songs. They will consider if you were insightful, funny, and well-versed - remember, this is all about promoting your group as the best one! Bland does not sell.

Sry that I quit the Discord, been feeling a bit all over the place this past week and I think watching the main chat as pre-jury is adding to that. (Pre-jury can't post there)

In the future I'll join Discord ATRL games as a viewer.

And I can't vote in the finale anyways so I hope I didn't break any rule :cute:

Pressure

  • Artist Selection - 3.5/5 - Well, there’s a Few problems I have with this selection. First being that its kinda hilarious to choose prime Beyonce in a group setting, given Destiny’s Child turned into the Beyonce show, and then giving her a bunch of vocal-heavy songs to really become the center of attention once again. Its like… what’s even the point of anybody else? I also kinda didn’t Love the idea of taking three of the biggest rnb stars of that era, then sticking a fairly famous rapper and airdropping Ryan in there for a little bit of a surprise. I mean, I appreciate the effort, but it feels like more of a half measure tbh. For real for real if certain allegations never hit the fan I bet R Kelly would have wound up in this thing too. That’s just the vibe I’m getting here. However, everyone really fit together pretty well and I could absolutely see a record label arranging this cohort!
  • Originality - 1.5/4 - I’m giving half a point for the Ryan addition, because its funny and surprisingly well-placed, however nothing else about this group screams original. Its very much a generic template group for the 90s, and you even capped it off with the Babyface production which truly drives it into rehash territory.
  • Musical Direction - 3/5 - Musically, despite the very tried-and-true lane this group was in, it still felt slightly all over the place? Like yeah its 90s rnb but like, New Jack Swing along with that extreeeemely 80s Janet song, and then that really corny Pebbles song? It just did not feel like a Vision. It felt very scrapbooky, which normally I’d give more leeway with given the challenge, but the fact that your road was already paved for you and you still weren’t musically cohesive I kinda can’t overlook it. It also didn’t really make any sense that you got a rapper in the mix but then chose only one song that prominently featured rapping. Was Eve just standing in the background twiddling her fingers for most of the era?
  • Aesthetics - 2/3 - This was fairly decent, very standard 90s fare, not really getting the BEST visuals of the 90s (like honestly even sliding in a screengrab from Belly would’ve done wonders for this portion) but the weirdest part was that gif of Usher and Bey, which was just so totally out of place tbh.
  • Written Portion - 3/3 - Absolutely ******* hilarious. Incredibly well explained. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this.
  • Total - 13/20

United Neone

  • Artist Selection - 2/5 - I’m not gonna lie, this is literally almost exactly what I was dreading when I thought of this challenge, and I thought the whole tangent about Don’t Call Me Angel would deter this, but…. I guess not! Anyway, yeah they’re all pop stars for the gays but can you really see Troye and Lil Nas looking totally natural singing and dancing together? How would Mabel’s husky unemotive voice mesh with Rina’s theater kid wails? Bebe Yana’s muted mumbles trying not to get lost in the fray with everyone else’s fairly distinctive vocals? Things to consider !
  • Originality - 2.5/4 - The only real surprise once you see the first two names is that Bebe is there and not Charli or Caroline tbh. The groups’ concept itself is kinda on the generic side with a lot of it having been seen before. I get the sense this is kinda what ever young gay dreams up in their head as a cool sorta alt-pop-but-still-palatable-act.
  • Musical Direction - 4/5 - Whoa that Caroline song was an absolute freaking turd. That being said, I could absolutely picture the members and picture the visuals going along with the songs. There’s for sure a vision here. I feel like Psychedelic Switch really set it off on a high note and Agora Hilla kinda made sense but not really in the same way the other songs did tbh? The songs themselves were like not good but! Its not really about me. Objectively, I could absolutely see this group getting signed and releasing a few songs that would make minimal noise and have a lukewarm album rollout before teasing a second one that would inevitably get shelved and start a label dispute, getting an r/popheads thread that would have 13 comments of a few people going “they’re so underrated! I saw them at my shabby bar here in Leeds they really rocked it!”
  • Aesthetics - 3/3 - So pretty! This was a pretty common aesthetic in the 2010s and I always loved it. There’s actually this old disbanded UK girl group named Neon Demon that did a video for a song named Braveheart that kinda has a similar but not exact direction that you’re going for here.
  • Written Portion - 2/3 - I like that you took the time to really explain the mass-appeal of the group and it took me from feeling meh about it to understanding why you chose the things you chose. The fact that you elevated the concept itself is impressive. Problem is the ad felt a little kitsch in a bad way? I’m not sure how to explain it but if I was reading this and I didn’t have to, I wouldn’t. Like it was giving billboard article paid for by the label blurb and not like… genuine interest.
  • Total - 13.5/20

Transient Raven

  • Artist Selection - 5/5 - Okay, so outside of Ethel (who I luv) and Joji (who sucks) I had only vaguely heard of the others, which really stalled my review since I had to look into them independently. I love the choices! I laughed really hard when I heard Ethel being mentioned but you totally made it make sense.
  • Originality - 3/4 - Not gonna lie, I have absolutely seen this sort of general vibe before and audibly groaned the second I saw Tame Impala and Lana Del Rey one after the other in the playlist because like, whatever, its been done before! But the other musical selections and members picked and aesthetics, I racked my brain and I can’t think of another time it has been spun in such a way. So, definitely points for originality here!
  • Musical Direction - 4/5 - Bear with me here, but I feel like there was an almost shallow understanding of the sounds at play? Like, yeah its a chill indie type group but dancing in the moonlight on the same record as west coast? Lol, even just in style and tone, it just does not make sense. Vivid dreams as well just feels a little out of place. But overall it Works.
  • Aesthetics - 3/3 - Well, it almost feels like its giving a bad precedent to give you guys a perfect score for aesthetics when it was clarified that you don’t need graphics knowledge to do well in this portion of the challenge, well I can’t make the aesthetics not slay! I can’t make the aesthetics not slay. I don’t know what y’all want me to do. I cant make. The aesthetics not slay. I really love the direction you chose and it makes soo much sense with the members and musical choices and… whew! You did that. Loves it.
  • Written Portion - 3/3 - This was written in a very advertisement way but it was done in the best possible form of it. Love love love the wordsmithing here, I could learn a thing or two from it. The way the members strong points were highlighted and the fact that their capabilities were perfectly laid out to gain a deeper understanding of the thought put into this. Just wonderful.

Pressure

  • Artist Selection - 4/5 - First 4 are all pretty solid and varied choices, but then you chose Ryan Gosling? I cackled a bit when I saw that because why on earth? He sticks out like a sore thumb, and I know he’s only the pianist but I really am struggling to see any sort of connection/thought process behind him.
  • Originality - 2.5/4 - Am I obsessed with your concept? Not really, but I do think it’s solid and unexpected. I think my main issue with it is that it feels pretty dated instead of fresh, which was stated in the Originality prompt as the main factor to consider.
  • Musical Direction - 3.5/5 - Definitely a cohesive selection of songs, maybe I wish it had a little bit more… c*nt, if you will, since Beyoncé is the lead vocalist and these aren’t very explosive for her, except for Escapade which I think is the best choice. They do work better for Usher to shine but I do wish it had a little more variety to fit both of them better.
  • Aesthetics - 1.5/3 - Again, it’s cohesive and works nicely when put together but it doesn’t feel fresh to me, I wish you took some more modern aspects to implement into the retro 90’s vibe that you went for to make it stand out and be more unique.
  • Written Portion - 2.5/3 - I think you had a good write-up because of the way you structured the group, it sounds convincing and believable and it would definitely work as a real group, you explained the roles very thoroughly and everything was pretty clear, except for the whole bit where you explain the name of the group and I quote “The name of the band was taken from the word 'pressure'” which absolutely sent me because… well yes it does!
  • Total - 14/20

United Neone

  • Artist Selection - 5/5 - This group was clearly made for the girls, gays and theys. I feel like everyone in this group and the eras that you chose for each member work very well together and feel very in the same universe, maybe I would’ve chosen Space Mulan era for Bebe Yana but that’s just a very minor nitpick.
  • Originality - 4/4 - I think that this was the best group out of all 3 in terms of being original while still very cohesive, l love the fact that they’re all from different countries and I think that overall I like the concept for this group.
  • Musical Direction - 2/5 - Now this, I feel like it was kind of all over the place and you tried to encapsulate an extremely wide audience into something that realistically wouldn’t interest “Stepford wives who think Maroon 5 and OneRepublic make good music”, that was pretty unnecessary to me and only appealing to the latter group you mentioned was fine. You described the sound as a “blend of dance pop and hyperpop” which is not a very uncommon combo nowadays so I personally feel like you could’ve done a better job at finding songs that fit that criteria. The 5 songs you chose feel very incohesive to me, with Agora Hills being the main culprit because I don’t see how it fits the sound you described, Dang is a bit odd too when paired with the other 3 songs but I guess I can kinda see why you chose it. Psychedelic Switch was probably the best pick to me, and the other 2 would’ve been better off replaced by better choices that encapsulated that blend you mentioned.
  • Aesthetics - 2.5/3 - Neon visuals aren’t very creatively groundbreaking but it obviously fits very well with the whole concept and name of your group, they are very pretty to look at and definitely fit the vibes.
  • Written Portion - 2.5/3 - I think your write-up was nice! Maybe I wish you went into more detail and explained the roles that everyone would have in the group, but overall I think you did a great job explaining the essence of the group.
  • Total - 16/20

Transient Raven

  • Artist Selection - 3/5 - I’m honestly not too sold on Ethel and Joji being here, a bit more Joji than Ethel; while I can kinda see the “contrast yet complement each other” argument that you made for her and V V Brown, it’s a bit of a reach to me since they’re not similar at all, and Joji feels pretty out of pocket since there’s no other justification given for than him being a good singer.
  • Originality - 3/4 -. My critique for this ties in a bit with the Artist Selection, I think you risked cohesiveness for the sake of originality, and I do think it is an interesting and original concept but it doesn’t end up making full sense to me.
  • Musical Direction - 5/5 - I think you had the best combo of songs because they’re all pretty cohesive and I could definitely see them existing in the same project.
  • Aesthetics - 2.5/3 - Very pretty and cohesive and fitting with the whole vibe and aesthetic of the group, although I struggle to see most of these people in an aesthetic like this which again, ties into the Artist Selection critique.
  • Written Portion - 3/3 - You obviously had the best story concept by far even though I don’t really get the name, I love that you made up a whole story behind the formation of the band, as absurd and completely unbelievable as it is.

@Rotunda

Pressure

  • Artist Selection - 4/5 - I think the inclusion of everyone but Ryan Gosling makes sense, and there isn’t even enough rationale given there for me to want to give it some credit for originality.
  • Originality - 2/4 - There’s something very unoriginal about putting two of the most lauded R&B performers (one of which who was already in an R&B group) into an R&B group, as well as a legendary writer/producer. The most inspired choice here is Eve.
  • Musical Direction - 3/5 - Getting prime Beyoncé just to give her songs that are even less demanding than what she was doing during her time in Destiny’s Child? Okay.
  • Aesthetics - 2.5/3 - Looks like I’m watching UPN or a rerun of a 90s sitcom. The fashions are cool but not really elevated.
  • Written Portion - 2/3 - This was cute enough.
  • Total - 13.5/20

United Neone

  • Artist Selection - 3.5/5 - Who will be doing the singing? On a serious note. I think there are subgroupings here that make sense (Nas and Troye), (Rina and Troye), but like…10 seconds in Rina would be quitting the group over Lil Nas X being problematic.
  • Originality - 4/4 - I like the idea of a international queer-friendly group and I like the name and the diversity. I like that you didn’t lean too heavily on ATRL favorites, and nobody feels *too massive* to be plopped into a group.
  • Musical Direction - 2.5/5 - This is kinda thrown together actually. Can’t imagine Mabel sounding well on a song like Agora Hills or Lil Nas X blending in well with this group on Psychedelic Switch.
  • Aesthetics - 3/3 - I like it yeah.
  • Written Portion - 1.5/3 - Yeah I don’t actually think you understand the group’s appeal. There’s no way a group like this appeals to the soccer moms, especially based off the music you selected. This is a niche group for the gays and theys.
  • Total - 13.5/20

Transient Raven

  • Artist Selection - 3.5/5 - I’m a bit perplexed by the Ethel placing but otherwise yeah this makes sense.
  • Originality - 4/4 - Yeah this is clearly the most original concept of the 3 and you can see a lot of work was put into conceptualizing this and making something different.
  • Musical Direction - 5/5 - Yeah this all makes sense to me.  I could see this all materializing.
  • Aesthetics - 3/3- This is a strong aesthetic, no complaints here.
  • Written Portion - 2.5/3 - Your name is awful. Like…by far the worst name here. Horrible.

@supaspaz

Pressure

  • Artist Selection - 3.5/5 - I was seeing the vision…and then I got to Eve and started to scratch my head…and then I saw Ryan Gosling and really lost the plot. Throwing Eve in the mix as in-house rapper certainly makes sense for a new jack swing group, but in that case, Babyface would not be my songwriter/producer of choice, given that he’s best known for his smooth ballads! As for Ryan Gosling, I did have a laugh and a drool over his BOP photoshoot. But that one iconic “Mickey Mouse Club” performance aside, I’m not sure he’s got the swag. And why does a new jack swing group need a pianist anyway?
  • Originality - 2/4 - No doubt, Beyoncé and Usher would slay this concept. But simply recreating a new jack swing group from the ground up isn’t the most inspired idea.
  • Musical Direction - 4/5 - I love this music, so you’ll never hear me opposing a return of new jack swing. Your selections definitely feel like a cohesive album era, including the token ballad. I’m glad you chose a couple of Babyface songs, but why not all of them, to really make your case about this group’s sound? The man isn’t suddenly going to turn into Jam & Lewis. There also doesn’t seem to be much of a role for Eve. She got pushed aside like Left-Eye on CrazySexyCool!
  • Aesthetics - 3/3 - I am ready for Ryan Gosling with his **** out in a leopard print bra.
  • Written Portion - 2.5/3 - You truly won me over with this line: “We chose 90s Usher in the appearance department but Confessions era (2004) talent wise.” But there’s no genuine effort here to make the case for Ryan Gosling’s presence in the group. You essentially acknowledge how odd it is (“Didn't see this one coming, huh?”) and then move right along as though that’s enough.
  • Total - 15/20

United Neone

  • Artist Selection - 4/5 - So we’re doing a coed Paradiso Girls meets homosexual Scene 23 (look it up!) thing here? I can dig it. It’s a cute concept, though I’m not sure you pulled together the most inspiring mix of global talent. I could actually see Troye and Nas making something interesting together, and Rina probably fits into their vibe as well. But why pick Mabel, for example, when you could just include Charli XCX herself, who is clearly one of the inspirations? Some more thoughtful explanation of why you pulled together these particular artists would have helped sell me on it more.
  • Originality - 1.5/4 - Sorry, but I hate the group name. Why is there an E at the end of neon? It gets at my general issue with this entry, which is that you took something fairly obvious (a supergroup of ATRL-friendly pop acts!) and tried to dress it up as more exotic than it is. I’ll give you a bonus for building in something extra with the international branding.
  • Musical Direction - 3/5 - It could be stronger. There’s not quite enough cohesion for this to rise above a playlist of songs by artists from that New York Times article about pop’s middle class. Based on your mood board, I got the sense that you wanted to emphasize the dark and sultry side of neon. The only track where that fully clicked for me was “In the City” – whereas “Psychedelic Switch,” for example, is bright and bubbly like the neon pink of Barbie. And would the same act be releasing “Agora Hills”? I’m not convinced.
  • Aesthetics - 2.5/3 - Your mood board is gorgeous, but it’s really hitting the nail on the head. How much thought went into this?
  • Written Portion - 2/3 - You did yourselves no favors by arguing that this group would slay everyone “from the Stepford wives who think Maroon 5 and OneRepublic make good music, to the low-key straight bro getting head on the DL from your best friend’s boyfriend.” Please. This is niche music for homosexuals and you know it. Or if you don’t, then I truly question what was going on with the brainstorming of this group.
  • Total - 13/20

Transient Raven

  • Artist Selection - 4/5 - This feels like a group built around Kevin Parker. His vibe is driving the concept and then you looked for other artists that could pull it off. I think you mostly succeeded, without being totally obvious about your choices – though Ethel Cain is throwing me off. I’m confused at how she fits in here.
  • Originality - 4/4 - I want to give your team credit for taking the biggest risk in this challenge. You brought together several artists who might be considered musical auteurs, rather than performers that would conventionally fit within a pop collective, and made the case for them as a supergroup. It’s just crazy enough to work.
  • Musical Direction - 4/5 - You were onto something! A hip, chillwave sound that would have set the early 2010s blogosphere on fire while peaking at #157 on the album chart. And then came “Dancing In the Moonlight.” What the hell was “Dancing in the Moonlight” doing here? It just felt so disconnected from your other four songs, with none of their psychedelic cool. Drop that, though, and I’m definitely checking out this record.
  • Aesthetics - 2/3 - While your overall presentation is excellent, the mood board is the least creative part of your entry. It’s giving standard AI art – not out of step with the sound of the group, but lacking that pop of surprise that I got from your artist selection.
  • Written Portion - 3/3 - I absolutely love how you took this challenge to the next level. This actually feels like an article that I might read somewhere about an emerging act. The origin story is so funny, yet you still managed to persuade me that this is a group that could come together with something to say about the world through their music. All that’s missing is an explanation for their stupid name.

I'm a liar - the results are pretty obvious. It's the Silver Team aka "the worst name" aka Transient Raven aka @Aurora @Alldeezy @fiercE - congrats you three! You all are safe this round with a final average of 8.38/10.

Gold - you were last with 6.94, and Bronze, you were second with 7.00.

For the other six of you, I can't say the same. Votes for Tribal Council and any item plays (even conditional ones!) are due on Saturday, December 2nd at 11:30 AM EST!
