Music critic: "Taylor massively overhyped. Critics afraid of backlash from Swifities"

Media is not overhyping Taylor like your faves

GP is overhyping Taylor just like they did biggest popstars ever. If you have problem go contact them.

Being bitter because some act is bigger than your fave is just extremely toxic but again OTHs have been doing this for quite some time

Hope you all get proper healing

Some people can't accept other having different taste in things such as music and movies, so they can't stop attacking and diminishing what they don't like. I will never understand it. It's so easy to just ignore what you don't like and listen to what you love and leave other people enjoying their own things. You're not in the right by default, your opinion is not automatically the truth.

I still find it suspicious how this discourse only ever seems to revolve around women artists.

At several points over the last decade, Justin Bieber, Bad Bunny, Ed Sheeran, Morgan Wallen, Drake and even Travis Scott have been just as oversaturated as Taylor Swift. They've dominated streaming, dominated the charts, courted massive and often frantic and chaotic fanbases and monopolized the pop cultural landscape, but you'd be hard pressed to see a reaction like this.

I've noticed that on Reddit and Instagram, Taylor Swift has become synonymous with the word "overrated", and you can't even go into an Eras tour video without comments from mostly straight men seemingly angry about people, particularly women, enjoying Taylor and her music.

It's just like Beyoncé after ST, when she began gaining acclaim and all of a sudden it became cool to call her overrated and overhyped.

Journalists are afraid of Taylor Swift fans yet you've had straight men cause literal riots, looting and property destruction over their favorite sports teams, not to mention the general toxicity of both Hip-hop and Rock music fans. Country music fans today are basically in competition for who can send the next racist to #1 on the charts. Where are the articles about these fanbases? Are they not even scarier?

It's ridiculous truly and it's why I don't even bother. People are always going to look down on entertainers that women (and gay men) enjoy and this is the result of that.

It's stupid how our society will always have this energy for women entertainers, who on average put in 3x the work of their male counterparts, but will turn around and be radio silent about the men.

Get a life :deadbanana2:

Tbf most male artists nowadays are generally hated or dismissed anyways. No one sees Bieber, Ed (this guy is actually panned) or Drake (has been called overrated by the hip hop community) and other male artists as some paragon of music (except for Kendrick tbf).

Coldplay are one of the best sellers and biggest tpuring acts. Critics hate them

Critical hype is not related at all

And Coldplay's last tour is receiving widespread acclaim, as they deserve looking at what they are achieving. No one is complaining about Chris Martin's dance moves and saying that they are being overhyped. Media is talking about their legendary achievements and numbers.

To be fair, this was a big discussion point regarding BTS over the last few years as well

Another band with a predominately female fanbase.

it's always the artists (/ ANY media, really) with predominantly female fanbases getting hit with these discussions it's transparent and pathetic :rip:

And the albums keep on bombing with critics. And that has happened for ever. Tina Turner has been considered one of the best touring acts and her albums got no hype.

There's no correlation

The Sun and the Daily Mail are banned officially as sources on Wikipedia, just as a side-bar.

I know this was discussed briefly as a possibility among some mods pre-pandemic, but I don't know what happened regarding that.

Travis & Drake in particular have had their fair share of negative criticism directed to them from critics, and people complain about Hip Hop fans all day, that either they're stuck in the past and don't give new acts grace or they're on the other end of the spectrum and have no standards for new acts.

This is something ATRL should revisit... These topics with these sources are so useless and generate more chaos than spread actual factual information.

And OF COURSE the author of that article is a TERF, why am i not surprised? :bibliahh:

The fact that one of her "reasons" to hate Taylor is the fact that she never had a meltdown/never went to rehab is also very telling about the kind of person the author is. Pure insanity

Obviously not, but you can’t just chock up all criticism of Taylor to sexism, when that’s clearly not the root of a lot of it.

I think you might genuinely believe this, but the fact of the matter is, whenever an artist gains a lot of female fans, the think pieces come rolling in about how that artist "is overrated"; "is not talented", "make bad music" etc.  Its all just to say that women are incapable of having good taste.

And then the joke of the matter is 10 years latter or so, men will "discover" the artist, and all of a sudden it will become cool to like that artist.

The fact it's usual suspect too who are using this to drag Taylor

Like how low will you go :deadbanana4:

If you don't like Taylor or her music , why so worried

And this article is talking about how everyone keeps overhyping her Tour just because they are allegedly afraid of the backlash if they don't. She never talks about the music, just about how bad she dances and how basic she is.

Hence why I dont get this sexism argument being thrown around here. Male artists havent been the most acclaimed for years. Why would they be be similarly overhyped if they are not even overly hyped in the first place lmao.

So you agree with me then that this happens with artists with predominantly female fanbases?  Great!

Beatles were also dragged and joked about cause they had huge Female Fanbase

Most of the pop girls nowadays have majority of gay male fanbase than women ( who are more of casual listeners) so these people think they can drag Taylor

how are you gonna tell a black person that they don't know when someone is being racist?? I've experienced it on Twitter and that is my experience. I know you love Taylor and all but this is a great example of what I just said in this thread.  :toofunny3: please go enjoy her tour and all that she's giving you instead of trying to tell someone what they have experienced outside of ATRL.

That's awful. 5 Swifties on Twitter being racist does not mean the majority of her fans are racist though. Twitter is not real life.

Why is this reported ? :rip:

I get why some Swifties can get defensive. They're defending their fave but at the same time, from the perspective of someone who lives in a country where Taylor Swift is a flop and no one cares about her, witnessing the immense success her fanbase is getting her in the US is really impressive and scary at the same time. At the end of the day, music is subjective and people are allowed not to enjoy her work. That writter is writting what many people think but are scared to say because of the backlash they would get.

Isn't most female artist acclaimed right now?

Saying Taylor is overhyped cause you don't like her is extremely naive
