Music critic: "Taylor massively overhyped. Critics afraid of backlash from Swifities"

Whether or not you like Taylor, you have to admit there’s some truth to this. The absolute meltdowns when Speak Now had one meh review.. same with BTS or Harry Styles fans, some are just outrageously unhinged :rip:

The problem with the Speak Now TV review was that it commented mainly on the re-recording process, and not on the music itself.

She spilled and we all know that Swift’s mediocrity has been praised with articles in the last few years cause multiple big media outlets are on her payroll.

But also this “critic” sounds like a bitter stan too—from the article:

"Is that why she leaves me feeling nothing? The lack of grit, the ingredient that made me obsess over Miley Cyrus or admire Britney Spears."

All in all, “music critics” are a joke and most of them either follow the editorial politics of their company (from being on artists payroll) or in some cases make totally biased reviews depending on who they are reviewing (some serving obsessed haters).

Would a random contributor from a UK tabloid lie

What about Jon Caramanica, he also said this during his coverage of Midnights on Popcast. He’s usually pretty fair (he loves reputation) and just gave Midnights a less than great review. There’s definitely been a shift in how critics or supposed critics cover Taylor and music more broadly.

The entire article reads like an ATRL meltdown ngl :rip:

You can make an argument for any artist being overhyped.

But the fact that literal rags are publishing hateful articles like this is a testament to how big Taylor is right now. Random edgy "anti-woke" TERF losers writing a "I'm not like the other girls, I hate her... She's so big and I don't get it" article about your fave is kind of a win to be honest.

It's not as if this article was written by a veteran music critic from guardian lmao.

Kara isn't wrong. Taylor is nothing spectacular when it comes to entertaining or singing and her writing is one note and lackluster at best. A lot of Swifties are racists and bigots so her feelings are valid and warranted. also, Taylor Swift fans do not take kindly to criticism of any kind.

:toofunny3: and yet the kids on a forum are telling me that Taylor Swift fans aren't racists

This goes many ways though.

See Beyonce and that one black woman who was called racist and bullied for not feeling Renny. Beyonce's hype also never equates to albums sold or streamed or AOTY despite the overzealous praise.

The writer seems to miss the point of why Taylor is so massive, but I also get it bc I used to be a TSwift hater until it clicked for me too.

Taylor Swift as a consumer brand and as an artist is the most palatable and marketable pop star of our time.

When you combine the dancing and the off key singing, that critic isn’t wrong!

I almost bought into Swifties’ propaganda that their fave has improved drastically in term of vocals just to get hit with a realization while listening to SPEAK NOW TV. The way she screeches through every high note is ear impairing. I don’t know how they tolerate listening that - Maybe that’s why they can’t hear her off key singing.

I'm surprised that people are surprised that her talent and success don't match up.

If you look at the history of entertainment, not just music, the most successful people and brands are almost never the most talented or high quality.

The Rock is arguably the biggest star rn. Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock are the biggest female movie stars of the last 30-40 years. No one will make a case that they're the most talented. We just went through 15 torturous years of Marvel ruling Hollywood.
In music, some of the most talented acts - solo or otherwise - put out one or two classic records then vanish because artistically they said what they had to say and don't want to play the marketing PR game.

So, Taylor being largely below average but the most successful popstar is not surprising but actually par for the course.

He doesn’t have to get it either. And he thinks Vigilante **** is the best song on Midnights, so I don’t know if I’m inclined to trust his opinion!

Okay, but can we not criticize the MCU’s faults because it’s popular? This logic that Swifties use to prove they’re right is so thin. Just because a lot of people like something doesn’t make it immune from criticism.

Ofc you can, you can show your subjective opinion, like "I don't like it" "She is a bad singer" "She can't sing" “That movie sucks”  and so on, just because you can't get the hype of someone/something then call it "overhyped" then pretend you're the most objective people in the world with "critical thinking" is the definition of being conceited and arrogant

Another hit thread for Miss Swift. She just can’t stop winning.
That article was a mess tho. She sounds bitter over nothing.

I agree. I know like 5 songs by her and I think there’s nothing interesting about it. To each their own, but yeah. Overhyped imo

“I know close to nothing about something yet proudly proclaim my judgement on it”

To each their own, though

Another thread was created by OTH and will gather a bunch of OTHs, are we surprised?
Anyway, when tomorrow's sun rises, Taylor Swift will remain the biggest artist in the world. Cruel Summer is still aiming for that #1. 1989 is ready to return to the top 10. Her sales and streams remain unmatchable, and her record-breaking tour will keep on going and going. Her talent of being able to write a catchable hit song alone like Love Story but also be able to write an album like folklore will keep being praised by critics, from the past to the future.
Hope those quick lil comments show you guys madness/anger/jealousy will make you feel better, I sincerely wish!

The worst thing that I don't get is how the most famous people in the world can get some journalist to give a negative opinion piece and garner clicks. That Daily Mail article has 2.8K comments. Now most of them are on the side of Taylor (which is unusual as the Daily Mail usually has comments with negative opinions). It happens here too on ATRL; when something raises controversy, you all run to it like it has greater importance when it is simply subjective. Do you even realize how important Taylor Swift must be for that to happen?

my second favorite genre of OTHs after popper f-words is jealous white women who think their opinions matter

the red, white, blue author's ass was just exposed too for her ill obsession and I don't feel bad for the karma either about to get

We should talk about how music critics at major publications are so obviously on record labels' payrolls that it isn't funny, but ATRL is probably one of the worst places to talk about that...

It’s not about his personal taste (which sucks) but about the fact that he observes people in the industry censoring their coverage of popstars due to large fan bases.

You can't just link to 2 random comments by twitter users and then act as if this is proof an entire fanbase is racist :rip: like what :rip:

“Coverage of a popstar has changed due to industry politics/fanbase mobilization” is not a subjective opinion.
