Because Harry never wore dresses before. He was never in touch with his feminine side until it became more trendy and got a new stylist because of actual queer men like billy who wore similar things to the red carpet.

 

And Harry got the cover from Anna wintour who was just virtual signingling to Billy that she is making the world more inclusive when her type of inclusive is a white male masc presenting man wearing a dresss.

Billy's point is that gender non-conformity expanded the territory for cishet men. Most of it was making sure that everyone knew that men could wear flowers and nail polish without being gay. Meanwhile, actual Queer people were overlooked and still marginalized.

Harry has been working with his stylist, Harry Lambert, since 2014. Harry was 20 years old and the face of a boyband marketed primarily to straight young girls. There were boundaries to what he could do, but he was already doing stuff

 

For years he wore clothes out of the "female" aisle, and it was weird for someone in his position to do that at that point, the three following photos are from 2014

He used to get dragged for wearing floral patterns to red carpets because it men simply didn't do that in 2015 (and before anyone thinks I'm claiming that he was trendsetting or the first one to do it, no, there were plenty of men before him in the 70s and 80s and 90s, and then masculinity got resetted for some god forsaken reason, until the 80s straight men wearing crop tops was seen as normal, but even today a man in a crop top = gay, imagine back in 2015)

He did very light pink nails towards the end of 2017 and it wasn't until 2018 when he started to paint his nails a ton of colors that were very showy. And to this day he gets comments about how feminine that is.

 

Was he wearing dresses in 1D? No. But he NEVER cared about that sort of thing and ALWAYS had a quirky fashion. You think he woke up a solo artist and decided to fall head first into a dress? His fans know it's genuine because it's been slowly building up since he was 16 years old. It means zero about his sexuality, just leave him alone wearing whatever he wants. He isn't bothering anyone lmao

Harry was gonna be on the cover regardless, whether he wore a generic suit or a dress. Vogue isn’t a gay magazine, it’s a fashion magazine, Vogue and Anna doesn’t owe him ****! Entitled, arrogant and rude, and the audacity to comfortably call a woman he barely knows a “*****” in a public interview. He’s just mad that harry is doing what he was best known for, but better.

I'm not one to defend Harry's queerbaiting ass but this is simply screaming "pressed and bitter" because it wasn't him. Especially since this is old news and he already criticized Vogue for it in 2021 and some people were supportive.  I'd have taken this more seriously if it came from another queer artist/celeb tbh, not Billy Porter and his "Patience, babies!" dismissive ****. I truly switched on him after that condescending and extremely out-of-touch take when he's the lead cis man in a show that is mostly about trans women.
